Arizona files lawsuit against Meta, says in-app features harm kids mental health
TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – “It’s if they’re taking behavior cocaine and just sprinkling it all over your interface,” said Arizona Attorney Kris Mayes during a press conference today.
Arizona is now one of over 40 states to file lawsuits against Meta, all claiming that Meta knowingly and continues to use tactics that lead to social media addiction.
Citing features like infinite scrolling and the like button, Attorney General Mayes joined the federal lawsuit in California’s Northern District.
“This type and this level of use is destructive to the physical health and mental health and social connections of our kids,” Mayes said.
Meta responded by saying, “We share the attorneys general’s commitment to providing teens with safe, positive experiences online and have already introduced over 30 tools to support teens and their families.”
Meta, however, also expressed its disappointments over the lawsuits, but Mayes seems to disagree, stating they are only “prioritizing their profits over children’s health and safety.”
One Tucson family therapist, Nicole Moore, weighed in on the extent of social media’s impact on young users, saying scrolling endlessly on your phone is only a distraction from things that matter most.
“It’s a really easy way to distract you from your own life,” Moore said.
“So for teenagers, they’re really missing out on being with their friends socially, not sitting on a couch on your phone, but actually doing things together.”
Moore says showing the number of likes on Instagram or Facebook can also cause some users to worry and feel upset that their content is not being engaged as often as another users.
“When you post something,” Moore said, “you get all these likes and comments, that is the reward; wow this is going viral and people are paying attention to me, or my crush is starting to notice me.”
“That is the validation that is not only emotionally rewarding, but chemically rewarding as well in the brain.”
Facebook and Instagram have tools in place to limit kids’ access to certain content and how it may impact them, but kids have been known to find hidden paths behind those controls.
Moore says users need to set boundaries on social media viewing.
“Having a really honest conversation with your kids and being able to say these are the dangers and positives, and how do you want to work with me on creating a really healthy environment.”
Attorney General Mayes also noted she is looking into other social media companies like TikTok to address the same concerns, but no formal case has been filed.

Police officials confirmed that a suspect arrested on Saturday in Winslow, Arizona, was wanted on charges of rape and murder of a Louisiana teen girl.
Arizona authorities assisted in the arrest of Montrell Donell Holmes, who was suspected of killing 14-year-old Ashley Barnes.
In a Facebook post made by the Bastrop Police Department, police officials said they were conducting a homicide investigation after they discovered a body in the woods, later identified as Barnes.
Officials said a suspect was arrested in connection to the case, identified as Holmes.
On Saturday, officials from the U.S. Marshals Service said their Flagstaff office received a request from the Marshals Service’s Western District of Louisiana Violent Offender Task Force to help locate and arrest Holmes.
Officials said he was wanted on charges of the murder and rape of Barnes.
The Marshals Service’s Flagstaff task force officers, in coordination with the Flagstaff Police Department and Department of Public Safety, located and arrested Holmes using cellphone tower pings. He was arrested in Winslow, just by Highway Interstate 40 and North Park Drive.
Officials said Holmes was awaiting transport back to the Western District of Louisiana, where he will face his charges. The Bastrop Police Department was still investigating the murder.

Cardinals Disrespected in Uniform Rankings
ARIZONA — Much like anything new, not many were fans of the Arizona Cardinals’ new uniforms when they were first introduced last offseason.
A new era of football was underway in the desert with the fresh presence of Jonathan Gannon and Monti Ossenfort, and thus the timing for a fresh set of uniforms couldn’t have been better.
The previous set was fairly old and outdated.
While the newest looks aren’t exactly top of the league, it’s hard to say they’re not an upgrade from what we previously saw at State Farm Stadium.
The Cardinals still rank near the bottom of recent NFL uniform rankings, however. USA Today had the organization at No. 26.
“Are they effectively Ohio State West since last year’s redesign? Yeah, basically. Is that a notable improvement from where they’d been? Yeah, basically,” said Nate Davis.
Well, that’s a lazy take.
The Ohio State comps were popular, sure, especially with the gray on the side of the sleeves for their white road and black alternate jerseys, though that color was added as a nod to the organization’s past.
The Cardinals found themselves behind teams such as the Rams, Falcons, Titans and Giants in USA Today’s rankings.
Even Atlanta fans will tell you the “ATL” and numbers look ridiculous.
As for the Titans, nobody’s exactly rushing to buy these.
The Cardinals could probably benefit from a pair of throwback uniforms, and though Arizona clearly doesn’t have the best-looking threads in the league, their overall standing in the uniform rankings near the bottom is laughable.
For what it’s worth, the Chargers/Raiders/Steelers being atop the league is tough to argue.
