Angler catches record-breaking 71-pound fish in infamous Texas lake

An angler broke a Lone Star State record by catching a 71-pound fish in an infamous Texas lake earlier this summer.

The catch, which was a smallmouth buffalo, was announced on Friday. The 71-pound behemoth was swimming in Austin’s Lady Bird Lake when it was captured using a fishing rod and reel.

Lady Bird Lake has become notorious for being the site of several dead bodies over the past 18 months. Last summer, the discovery of a John Doe body spurred rumors that a serial killer’s victims were dumped in the lake.

In a social media post, Texas Parks & Wildlife identified the angler as Austin Anderson and shared a picture of the fisherman beaming while holding his catch. The fish, which was 44.5 inches long, was later released.

“Austin Anderson caught this massive Smallmouth Buffalo on 6/10/24 using a rod and reel,” the post read.

“Austin earned a Big Fish Award, Water Body Record, Water Body Catch-and-Release Record, and – last but not least – a State Catch-and-Release Record for his catch.”

Texas Parks & Wildlife told Fox News Digital that smallmouth buffalo fish are native to Texas and can grow “very large” in lakes.

“Anglers from other states and from Europe make trips to Texas to catch a personal best,” an official explained. “They can be common in some lakes; Lady Bird Lake has a relatively smaller population of large smallmouth buffalo.”

Magnitude 3.4 aftershock rocks Los Angeles area Friday morning

A magnitude 3.4 aftershock was felt throughout the Los Angeles area on Friday morning, less than 24 hours after a 4.7 rocked much of Southern California.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the aftershock was reported at 4:56 a.m. about 3.7 miles north of Malibu, about one-half of a mile south of the epicenter for Thursday’s quake. The aftershock had a depth of about 6.5 miles.

Friday morning’s aftershock was one of many, but easily the strongest yet. The USGS Impact Map shows that it was felt throughout the Los Angeles area and extended as far as Santa Barbara and Orange counties.

As seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones pointed out on Thursday, the high rate of earthquakes felt in Southern California in recent weeks is more likely to be a random occurrence than a pattern.

“Yes we are feeling (more quakes this year) but it’s not yet statistically significant,” Jones said in a news conference Thursday. “Seismologists look for patterns — everybody looks for patterns — that’s why we have myths of earthquake weather and animals and all of these things are us trying to form a pattern of what is inherently a random distribution.”

What to do in an earthquake

During an earthquake, experts say knowing the proper steps to protect yourself and minimize injury is crucial. The California Department of Public Health provides detailed guidelines on what to do during such events. Here are the key points:

Drop, Cover, and Hold On:

Drop: Immediately drop down onto your hands and knees. This position prevents you from being knocked over and allows you to stay low and crawl to safety if necessary.

Cover: Use one arm to protect your head and neck, and if possible, take shelter under a sturdy table or desk. If no shelter is available, get down next to an interior wall away from windows. Stay on your knees and bend over to protect vital organs.

Hold On: Hold on to your shelter until the shaking stops. Be prepared to move with your shelter if it shifts.

Rep. Colin Allred, D-Texas, featured the southern border wall in a recent Senate campaign ad despite having previously claimed the wall proposed by former President Trump was “racist.”

The Democrat was seen in a July campaign ad walking with law enforcement along a portion of the border wall as he hit Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, for opposing a border measure backed by Democrats in the upper chamber.

However, Allred has had a long history of opposing the border wall and other elements of Trump and Republicans’ efforts to secure the border.

In fact, at an event in 2018, Allred told attendees, “If they build that racist wall, my generation is the one that will tear it down. You’re not going to have a wall in this country.”

As a representative, he has voted against countless bills that would institute strict changes to address the crisis at the southern border. Most notably, he opposed the H.R. 2 Secure the Border Act, which had been advocated by House and Senate Republicans. The legislation is understood to propose the toughest crackdown on the southern border and illegal immigration in consideration.

He also voted for a resolution to end the national emergency declaration that then-President Trump had made for the southern border and in favor of legislation that would limit the president’s ability to suspend or restrict the ability of illegal immigrants to enter the country, among other controversial measures.

“Congressman Allred is laser focused on solutions supported by both parties to fix our broken immigration system and secure our border. Ted Cruz has been in the Senate 12 years and has nothing to show for it. He tanked bipartisan legislation that would secure our border. Lyin’ Ted only cares about himself, and Texans know he will never be part of a real solution,” Allred spokesperson Josh Stewart told Fox News Digital in a statement.

While the border bill in question was negotiated by bipartisan Sens. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., Kyrsten Sinema, I-Ariz, and James Lankford, R-Okla, Republicans have largely rejected the resulting bill and were vocal critics of the negotiations as they were taking place.

After the long-awaited release of the negotiated bill this year, Republicans promptly rejected it.

Some members of the Republican conference in the Senate have even said the measure would have made the current border crisis worse.

While some have pointed to Trump’s opposition to the bill as the reason it did not succeed, one Senate Republican told Fox News Digital it would have failed either way. But they said they imagine Trump is happy to take credit.

In the most recent procedural vote on the border bill, two of the three negotiators, Sinema and Lankford, voted it down.

Another Republican criticism of the bill has been that the president currently enjoys the authority to address many of the concerns at the border right now and doesn’t need additional congressional permission to fix the crisis.

Allred is not the only Democrat who has apparently changed their tune on the border wall as concerns about illegal immigration surge. Vice President Harris, who is running as the Democrat nominee for president, has also used the Trump-era border wall in campaign advertisements portraying her as strong on the southern border.

Trump’s campaign slammed Harris over this, with a spokesperson previously saying that statements that Harris now supports Trump’s border wall are “preposterous and false claim(s).”

A top political handicapper, the Cook Political Report, rated the Texas Senate race “likely Republican,” with Cruz boasting a significant advantage. However, given the Democrats’ relatively unfavorable Senate election map, the Texas and Florida Senate races are their best pickup opportunities.

Allred has spent far more on the race than Cruz so far, with millions more spent on past ad spending and on future reservations ahead of the election.

The suspect was identified as Steve Graves, 61, by the Anaheim Police Department. Graves is currently employed with the Anaheim Union High School District.

On Aug. 26, 2024, a woman reported to police that in the late 1980s, when she was a student at Loara High School in Anaheim, she had a sexual relationship with one of her teachers.

Detectives investigated and discovered a second woman who allegedly had a sexual relationship with the same teacher, Graves. She also told police she had a child together with him.
