Typhoon Lan crosses into Japan leading to 240K evacuations, over 900 canceled flights
- Typhoon Lan crossed into Japan from the Pacific Ocean on Aug. 15, 2023.
- At least 240K people were moved to safety and around 900 flights were canceled due to the storm.
- Japanese authorities have issued landslide and flood warnings in certain areas of the country.
Nearly 900 flights in Japan were canceled and 240,000 people were ordered to move to safety as a slow-moving typhoon crossed Japan’s main island of Honshu not far from the ancient capital of Kyoto, cutting off power to tens of thousands of homes.
Typhoon Lan, approaching from the Pacific Ocean, made landfall early on Tuesday at the southern tip of Wakayama prefecture, some 250 miles southwest of Tokyo, bringing heavy rain and powerful winds across a wide swathe of central and western Japan as it moved north.
Authorities issued flood and landslide warnings as rivers rose to the top of their banks, with parts of some bridges washed away. Tornadoes formed in several areas but did not cause major damage.
TYPHOON KHANUN LASHES OKINAWA WITH STRONG WINDS, HIGH WAVES
By evening, the center of the storm – which had weakened to tropical storm strength – was nearing the Sea of Japan, though forecasters warned concentrated rains were still possible across a wide area.
It continued to move slowly, at around 9.3 mph, raising the potential for flooding as rain pelted the same areas for a long time. Parts of central Japan recorded 23 inches of rain in the 24 hours to 7:00 p.m.
Some two dozen people were injured, with one in serious condition, NHK public television said.

Authorities said they had set up evacuation centres in safe buildings and high ground for residents across 11 prefectures whom the Fire and Disaster Management Agency told to seek shelter.
As well as the disruption to flights, the dangerous rain and wind forced the closure of some roads and the suspension of dozens of train services, although by evening on Tuesday, some roads were reopening.

The storm comes days after Typhoon Khanun hit Japan during its peak Obon holiday season, when many factories close and city-dwellers return to their home towns and villages.
Power outages hit almost 90,000 households in central and western areas, utilities said. Seven & i said some 210 7-Eleven convenience store outlets were shut for safety reasons.

I had planned on one day off, but personal issues pushed it to 3. I could have started late on the last of these days, but as it was raining, 50sF, overnight in the low 40s, and the forecast for the next 5 days was rain off and on well…
Day 12
It stopped raining! Let’s go! The trail starts at the Susquehanna River and goes straight up to the top of the ridge (~1,200 ft in 2 miles). If you find Duncannon on a map with contours, you can see this is the same ridge that hits Duncannon on the west side except that the river cut through it. It also has the same rocks. I lost a sitting pad somewhere in those rocks.
I was so full of energy from the days off that I wanted to go further. Except thunderstorms were forecast for the evening and overnight.
The Shelter was full and on the bottom level, so I headed to the 2nd (Yes, this Shelter had 2 levels). I had my pick of spots and chose poorly. I was on the windward side. The rain didn’t come in on me, but the cold air blew in that window and straight down onto me. I barely kept warm enough.
Yes, that’s the trail!
Day 13
The next morning was cold and rainy. I trudged 18 miles all day in the rain. Got to the Shelter about 5:00 pm. There were already two guys there in their sleeping bags and ready to sleep. I, and two more guys cooked our meals and went to sleep as well about 7:30. The two guys that were already in the sack slept straight through until 5:30 in the morning. Then they made a lot of noise when they got up and took off by 6:00.
Day 14
The day was nicer and the 17.5 miles went faster. Except for the Damned rocks. I can make pretty good time until I hit the rocks. Then it’s down to 1/2 to 1 mph.

The shelter was a dream. I shared it with only two other people. It was completely enclosed with about 18 bunks. A nice table in the middle for cooking, a spigot for water, a garbage can, and a hose for a shower. The shower was COLD, but felt good anyway. I dries my stuff out. Hooray!

Day 15
Not so far today, and good weather, which was a godsend.
I made it to the shelter about 15 minutes before it started raining. One other young lady from last night’s shelter arrived about the same time that I did. It poured all night.
Day 16
It finally stopped raining about 9:00am. I pulled a calf muscle and jammed my toe slipping on the rocks. I hate the rocks to begin with. I’m lucky if I can do 1/2 to 1 mph. When they’re wet, they’re really treacherous and I have to go even slower. But obviously I didn’t go slow enough. So I opted to stay in Port Clinton after only 9 miles. There is a pavilion provided by a church. It’s loud, but I can rest my foot and leg.

Authorities identify 78-year-old Florida man accused of fatally striking teen with boat
Investigators have identified the man who was operating the boat that fatally struck a 15-year-old girl off a South Florida beach and then left the area, but no criminal charges have been filed, according to a report released Wednesday.
The 78-year-old man owns the Coral Gables home where Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers found and seized the docked boat Tuesday afternoon. The man was the only occupant in the boat at the time of Saturday’s hit-and-run crash that left Ella Adler dead, according to the commission’s report.
US COAST GUARD SUSPENDS SEARCH FOR MISSING FLORIDA DIVER: ‘DEEPLY SADDENED’
A Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokesperson said the investigation was active and they couldn’t speculate on what charges might be filed.
Adler and another girl were wakeboarding behind a 42-foot Hanse Fjord walk-around near Key Biscayne, just south of Miami, on Saturday afternoon before falling off at different spots, officials said. A dozen people had been on the boat pulling Adler. Before the vessel could return to collect her, Adler was hit by another boat, which immediately sped away, officials said. Witnesses described the hit-and-run craft as a center console boat with a light blue hull, multiple white outboard engines and blue bottom paint.

A funeral service for Adler was held Monday morning at Temple Beth Sholom in Miami Beach. Adler was a freshman at Ransom Everglades School in Coconut Grove and a ballerina with the Miami City Ballet.

Georgia football recruiting: An already mammoth UGA scavenger hunt weekend visitor list now includes 5-star OT David Sanders
This Sentell’s Intel rep on Georgia football recruiting breaks down the names that DawgNation has been able to confirm will be in Athens this weekend for the annual scavenger hunt that has developed into a major official visit weekend.
It is a [May] Georgia football recruiting tradition like no other. But it has suddenly morphed into something bigger than we’ve seen up to this point.
Georgia is set to host its biggest slate of official visitors ever for the annual scavenger hunt weekend that takes place every May. DawgNation has been able to confirm the names of four official visitors set for this weekend.
The annual scavenger hunt across the UGA campus hosts has featured pictures (and a subsequent obscure NCAA rule change) with live snakes and an at-times cutthroat competition to win the scavenger hunt that has included pilfered golf cart keys and selfie quests in the past.
Yet it now has another major 5-star visitor added to the guest list.
5-star OT David Sanders Jr. will be in Athens for the first time since a spring practice visit to check out the Bulldogs. DawgNation was able to confirm the news of the planned visit early this evening with a family source, but Steve Wiltfong on On3.com was the first with that news.
Every visit these days from Sanders is big. DawgNation has ranked the 5-star from Charlotte as the No. 1 “top target” on its weekly “Before the Hedges” listing of top prospects since the debut of the 2025 list back in November of 2023.
Sanders now ranks as the nation’s No. 1 OT prospect and the No. 2 overall recruit for the 2025 cycle on the 247Sports Composite scale. The On3 “Industry Ranking”
The Providence Day star won’t be the only 5-star in attendance over the weekend. 5-star 2026 QB commit Jared Curtis is expected to come down from Nashville for all the fun.
The expected guest list now also includes 5-star LB Zayden Walker, 5-star S Trey McNutt and also a key flip target in 4-star EDGE Isaiah Gibson out of Warner Robins. Gibson is currently committed to USC.
Lest we forget, the other major visits of the weekend will be the 48 hours of official visit time with the following prospects:
- 4-star RB Bo Jackson
- 4-star WR Marcus Harris
- 4-star WR Phillip Bell
- 4-star OL Ziyare Addison
Check out the list of names DawgNation has been able to confirm this week.

5-star David Sanders, Jr. | Charlotte, NC | No. 1 OT/ No. 2 | decided |

4-star TJ Alford | Fort Pierce, FL | No. 7 LB/ No. 62 | Ohio State commit |
4-star Bo Jackson (OV) | Cleveland, OH | No. 5 LB/ No. 71 | Undecided |
4-star Christian Garrett | Bogart, GA | No. 16 DL/ No. 133 | Undecided |
4-star Marcus Harris (OV) | Eastvale, CA | No. 15 WR/ No. 140 | Undecided |
4-star Phillip Bell (OV) | Los Angeles, CA | No. 16 WR/ No. 149 | Undecided |

4-star Ziyare Addison (OV) | Riverview, FL | No. 22 OT/ No. 211 | Undecided |
There will undoubtedly be a few more names added to this early list. There should be a few big 2026 names that will join Curtis this weekend to start building that class.
Garrett made the list above and it sounds like the 4-star Prince Avenue DL target will make the trip, but a final decision has not been made yet.
These plans are, as always, also subject to change.
DawgNation will continue to update this list as the RSVPs roll in for the week.
