South Carolina Adds Seven Transfers For 2024-25 Season

Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina swimming & diving head coach Jeff Poppell has announced the addition of seven transfers for the upcoming 2023-24 season.
“We are very excited about the addition of these seven outstanding transfers to our team,” said Poppell. “When you review their past accomplishments and also take the time to get to know them personally, it’s clear to see the type of strong and immediate impact that they will make within our program.”
Ahmed Rateb
Rateb joins the team after spending his undergraduate career at Florida Atlantic University, primarily swimming freestyle and butterfly sprint events. Originally from Cairo, Egypt, Rateb holds three FAU program records as well as four FAU freshman records. At the CCSA Championships, Rateb holds silver medals in the 100 fly, 200 fly, and 800 free relay as well as bronze medals in the 200 free relay, 400 free relay, and 400 medley relay. He was the CCSA Swimmer of the Year for the 2021-22 season and the 2022 CCSA Most Outstanding Swimmer of the Championship Meet.
Linus Kahl
Kahl of Helsingbord, Sweden, comes to South Carolina after spending his first two years of eligibility at the University of Alabama, specializing in the breaststroke. During both of his seasons with the Crimson Tide, Kahl earned points for the team at the SEC Championships in the 100 breast, 200 breast, and 200 IM with his best career finish coming in the 200 breast where he placed 13th in both 2022 and 2023. His career-best time of 1:55.48 in the 200 breast would have been the fastest on South Carolina’s men’s team in 2022-23 and would make him the third fastest swimmer in program history.
Duda Sumida
Sumida comes to Columbia from the University of Louisville where she spent her undergraduate career. A native of Marilia, Brazil, Sumida is an all-around swimmer, having qualified for the NCAA Championships in both the 200 and 400 IM, as well as the 200 fly and 500 free. Sumida is a two-time NCAA Qualifier and was a consistent scorer for the Cardinals at the ACC championships during her four years with the team.
Pia Murray
Murray of Preston, England, makes Columbia the third stop of her collegiate career, having spent her first two seasons at Florida State and most recently completing a season at Utah Tech. While with the Seminoles, Murray scored for the team at the ACC Championships, primarily swimming the backstroke and butterfly events. During her stint with the Bison, Murray rewrote the record books, claiming records in the 100 back, 200 back, 100 fly, 200 free relay, 400 free relay, and 400 medley relay. At the 2023 WAC Championships, Murray earned gold medals in the 100 fly, 100 back, 200 back, and the 400 medley relay as well as a silver medal in the 200 medley relay and a bronze in the 400 free relay. She was named the 2022-23 WAC Swimmer of the Year for her efforts.
Peyton Curry
Curry, a 2023 SEC Champion, joins the Gamecocks after completing her first two collegiate seasons at LSU. Originally from Dunwoody, Ga., Curry primarily swims freestyle spring events. Her SEC title came in the 2023 edition of the Championships where she was the third leg of the winning 200 free relay team, swimming a 22.23 split. Curry has a personal best time of 49.87 in the 100 free which would have been the second fastest on South Carolina’s 2022-23 team.
Breckin Gormley
Gormley of Almonte, Ontario, Canada, comes to South Carolina after a season at Kentucky. While with the Wildcats Gormley racked up five top-five finishes in dual meets, highlighted by a second-place finish in the 100 fly and a third-place finish in the 1000 free. She clocked a personal-best time of 1:57.67 in the 200 fly at February’s Ohio State Winter Invite which would have qualified her for the B-final at the 2023 SEC Championships. Gormley is an Olympic Trial qualifier for Team Canada.
Jordan Agliano
Agliano joined the Gamecocks in January after a semester at Kentucky but will see her first action in the Garnet & Black beginning this fall. Originally from Orlando, Fla., Agliano appeared in three dual meets for Kentucky in the fall of 2022. She primarily swims the middle-distance freestyle and butterfly events. Agliano is a U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier and recently placed first in both the 100 and 200 meter butterfly events at the USA Swimming Futures Championship in Ocala, Fla.

Both South Carolina and Iowa State lost their first games of the 2024-’25 season within the past eight days, with the Gamecocks falling on the road to No. 5 UCLA (77-62) on Sunday and the Cyclones to Northern Iowa (87-75) last Wednesday in Cedar Falls. South Carolina is now 5-1 in its defense of the 2024 NCAA women’s championship with a top-10 win over NC State highlighting the team’s early-season résumé. The Gamecocks will be Iowa State’s first ranked opponent after falling to No. 2 seed Stanford in overtime (87-81) in the second round of last season’s NCAA Tournament

ESPN's College Football Playoff Predictor has updated again. Here's where South Carolina stands
ESPN.com’s College Football Playoff predictor isn’t perfect because it applies analytics to a situation that ultimately will be decided by a committee of humans. But it does provide a nice guide and discussion piece about which teams have the best chance to make this year’s College Football Playoff.
Because of that human element, the predictor has been updating twice each week, once on Sunday to account for Saturday’s games and again after the latest CFP rankings are released.

While the Gamecocks won their game on Saturday and got a lot of help from the teams around them last week, the logjam of SEC teams ahead of them in Tuesday’s rankings is still limiting their upside at this time.
With the committee putting South Carolina behind fellow three-loss SEC teams Alabama and Ole Miss, the predictor currently gives South Carolina a 20 percent chance of making the 12-team field, which is three percentage points lower than its chances in Sunday’s update.
The Gamecocks do, of course, have one more huge opportunity to pad their resume when they travel to Clemson this weekend to renew the annual rivalry in what may be the biggest game in the matchup’s history.
Beat the Tigers, who are currently No. 12 in the CFP Top 25, and South Carolina’s chances of making the playoff jump to 46 percent, according to the predictor.
While that’s just under a coin flip, it’s also 12 percentage points lower than it was in Sunday’s update.
South Carolina is still very much in the hunt but is going to need to win and play very well against Clemson and get more help around it.

As a reminder, the CFP committee’s top 12 teams won’t correlate exactly with the 12-team field.
The CFP will consist of the top five highest-ranked conference champions and the next seven highest-ranked at-large schools. The top four conference champions will receive the top four seeds and a first-round bye. The fifth conference champion will be seeded by its CFP ranking. If that ranking is outside of the top 12 it will be seeded 12th as the final team in the field.
The teams seeded 5 through 12 will fight it out in the first round with the winners advancing to the quarterfinal round to face the top four seeds.
The Gamecocks and Tigers are set for a noon showdown Saturday in Clemson.
ESPN Analytics uses FPI to simulate the entire college football season 200,000 times. A committee model is applied to mimic College Football Playoff selections and seeding in order to generate a 12-team bracket for each simulation. The most likely CFP teams are provided for user selections. After user inputs, a likely bracket is generated and randomly simulated using FPI.
