A person who was walking on a road Monday was killed in a crash with an SUV, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The collision happened at about 3 p.m. in Florence County, said Lance Cpl. Lena Butler.

Both the pedestrian and a 2001 Ford Explorer were heading east on Carmon Short Cut Road when the collision happened near the intersection with Jordan Church Road, according to Butler.

The pedestrian died at the scene.

The Florence County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the pedestrian.

Butler said the driver was the only person in the SUV and was not hurt. No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if the driver was wearing a seat belt.

Information about what caused the crash was not available, but it continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Sunday, 629 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 13 people have died in Florence County crashes in 2024, according to DPS data.

There was another deadly wreck in Florence County Sunday, when a pickup truck collided with a bicycle, killing the bike rider, according to the Highway Patrol.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – South Carolina Superintendent Ellen Weaver announced Monday afternoon that the Palmetto State has adopted PragerU as an educational partner.

The conservative media organization and nonprofit, founded in 2009 by radio talk show host Dennis Prager, has generated controversy through its provocative educational videos.

PragerU is well-known for their short videos for social media and YouTube with titles like “What Radical Islam and the Woke Have in Common”, “Make Men Masculine Again”, and “Would You Rather Be Colonized by Aztecs or Christians?”

When describing themselves, the organization says it is “a resource for all who value liberty [and] a threat to all those who do not.”

They add they work to “provide millions of Americans and people around the world with the intellectual ammunition they need to advocate for limited government, individual responsibility and economic freedom.”

Superintendent Weaver spoke with PragerU CEO Marissa Streit for an interview, released to the public on Monday. The conversation between the two focused on cell-phones in school and improving literacy, despite their videos predominantly focusing on conservative civics.

The South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) said various content streams from Prager U have been approved for usage in state schools, including PragerU Kids content, age-appropriate “5-Minute Videos” and the Cash Course series.

The department said PragerU’s resources are optional but will be supported by the state should teachers wish to use them.

“As we celebrate Constitution Day, the South Carolina Department of Education reaffirms its commitment to providing an exceptional education for every child,” said Superintendent Weaver. “We are thrilled to announce the addition of supplemental materials for South Carolina schools through this partnership. These optional educational materials, aligned with South Carolina’s K-12 standards, will provide a wide range of essential topics like civics and financial literacy.”

South Carolina is one of several states that have joined the PragerU in Schools initiative, including Florida, Oklahoma, Montana, New Hampshire, Arizona, Louisiana and more.

The Bruins’ quarterback was close to perfect, throwing for three touchdowns while completing 11 of 13 passes in a 49-14 romp over Fort Dorchester. Jackson also had a 43-yard touchdown run.

Richardson turned in a near flawless effort in Pee Dee’s 48-16 romp over previously undefeated Florence Christian. The senior quarterback was 11-of-14 for 202 yards and 4 touchdowns. He also had 5 carries for 135 yards and 2 touchdowns. In addition, Richards had an interception on defense.

The 6-foot, 165-pound senior rocked on both sides of the ball in a 50-36 win over Bluffton. Singletary ran 15 times for 149 yards and 2 touchdowns. On defense, he returned two interceptions for touchdowns.

Thompson is in his first year as the Bulldogs’ starting quarterback and he is playing like a star. In a 43-26 win over Ridge View, Thompson was 10-of-13 for 185 yards and 3 touchdowns while also running 22 times for 196 yards and a touchdown. And as if that wasn’t enough, Thompson averaged 41 yards on 4 punts.

The 6-foot, 170-pound senior intercepted 2 passes and made 10 tackles in the Griffins’ 33-8 pounding of previously undefeated Lewisville.

What didn’t Weaver do in the Rams’ runaway 55-14 win over Belton-Honea Path? The Appalachian State commit caught two touchdown passes, returned a kickoff 81 yards for a touchdown and returned an interception 25 yards for a touchdown. 

Foster turned in a great dual threat game at quarterback in a 43-6 victory over cross-border rival Polk County (N.C.). The 5-foot-11 junior was 7-of-12 for 175 yards and 2 touchdowns. On the ground he had 6 carries for 137 yards and a touchdown.

Ballard threw for 267 yards and 3 touchdowns to three different receivers while running for 57 yards and a touchdown in a 35-28 win over Hanahan.

The star tailback ran 14 times for 183 yards and 2 touchdowns in a 42-19 victory over Augusta (Ga.) Christian. Fludd also caught a 30-yard touchdown pass and made a couple of tackles on defense.

Offing was 16-of-26 for 216 yards and 2 touchdowns with an interception in the Silver Foxes’ 35-0 shutout of Gray Collegiate Academy. The 6-foot, 185-pound junior also had a rushing touchdown and punted twice for a 41.5-yard average.
