Hurricane Idalia to dump lots of rain in North Carolina: Timeline of storm’s impact in Triangle

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — Tuesday morning, Idalia strengthened into a category 1 hurricane. Idalia is forecast to rapidly intensify over the eastern Gulf of Mexico.

It’s forecast to be a category 3 (major hurricane) just before landfall near Cedar Key, Florida, on Wednesday morning. The storm is currently moving at 14 miles per hour and will speed up as it arrives on land.

Idalia will lift northeast across Savannah, Georgia, later Wednesday to a position along the Carolina coast Thursday.

This path will spare the Triangle the worst of this storm with the northwest flank producing rains of 1-3 inches along with gusty winds.

This rainfall from Idalia will renew flooding conditions, as they come after a few days of rain in the region. Wilds from Idalia may also be strong enough to cause some damage and trigger scattered power outages.

Expected impacts for Central NC (Wednesday night through Thursday afternoon)

Rain and wind from Idailia will likely arrive in central North Carolina late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

Hurricane Idalia makes a small westward shift which will bring the rain shield into more portions of Central NC late Wednesday into Thursday afternoon

It will be much worse toward the coast where sustained tropical storm force winds and gusts, to near hurricane force, will result in extensive wind damage. Coastal rainfall of 4-8 inches will trigger flooding and result in road closures.

Beach conditions will deteriorate as rip currents and high surf develop from both Idalia and Hurricane Franklin which is out in the Atlantic about halfway between North Carolina and Bermuda.

Rough surf and dangerous rip currents will continue through Thursday.

Idalia’s effects on the Triangle are expected to wind down Thursday night, although conditions will not improve along the coast until Friday.

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Po’Boigh King had 25 points in North Carolina Central’s 82-77 victory against South Carolina State on Saturday night.

King added six rebounds for the Eagles (10-12, 3-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference). Keishon Porter added 17 points while going 6 of 13 and 5 of 7 from the free-throw line while he also had five rebounds. Perry Smith Jr. shot 7 of 10 from the field and 2 for 4 from the line to finish with 16 points.

Mitchel Taylor led the Bulldogs (9-11, 3-2) in scoring, finishing with 16 points and four assists. Drayton Jones added 13 points for South Carolina State. Davion Everett also put up 12 points.

NC Museum of Natural Science hosts 24th annual African American Cultural Celebration

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — Black History Month has officially kicked off in the Triangle.

The 24th annual African American Cultural Celebration was held at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh. Visitors of all ages and backgrounds had the opportunity to explore the issues, icons, arts, and more that are related to the total experience of black people in the state.

The event was the first time the celebration was held at the Natural Sciences Museum. There were several partnerships to help make this event a success – including students from Elizabeth City State University helping to document the event.

“We are used to having it in the Museum of History. It has a different feel. It is exciting too because it’s bringing together people to see African American culture and the natural sciences,” said NC African American Heritage Commission Chairperson Dr. Valerie Ann Johnson.

“It’s an awesome event. Coming from eastern North Carolina, sometimes we miss information. So, if you hear about it put it on your calendar. Bring your kids, it’s a great learning opportunity for them,” said Elizabeth City State University Assistant Professor Clarence Goss Jr.
