A Mississippi triple-murder suspect who was in eastern Arizona on Monday was shot and killed by a trooper.

At around 7:30 a.m. on May 13, troopers were told there was a possible sighting of a man in the Safford area who was wanted in connection to a triple homicide in Mississippi that happened the day before.

DPS detectives, deputies from the Greenlee County Sheriff’s Office and officers from the Clifton Police Department worked to find the suspect.

Within a few hours, at around 10:17 a.m., the suspect was seen on US 191 between Morenci and Clifton. Authorities stopped the suspect and that’s when he reportedly got out of his car with a gun.

Ivory James Welch III was shot and killed.

“No law enforcement personnel from any agency were injured. The AZDPS Major Incident Division is investigating the incident,” said Arizona DPS Sgt. Eric Andrews.

Police in Ridgeland, Mississippi say Welch killed three people, including his mother, on Mother’s Day.

Guard Josh Hubbard was named the Male Freshman of the Year, as he earned spots on the All-SEC Freshman Team, All-SEC Second Team and was the recipient of the Bailey Howell Trophy, which is given annually to the best men’s college basketball player in the state of Mississippi by thenMississippi Sports Hall of Fame.

Forward Cameron Matthews was named the Male Breakout Athlete of the Year. The All-SEC Defensive Team member has been known for his versatility throughout the season as he finished top 3 among the Bulldogs in every stat category.

But perhaps the most notable achievement of that night went to the entire men’s basketball team as they won the Moment of the Year, which is awarded to the year’s biggest win across all sports. This stems from the Bulldogs’ 77-72 upset over No. 5 Tennessee on Jan. 10. The Bulldogs made school history in this SEC bout, as it was their first win over an AP Top 10 team since 2002.

NATCHEZ — Adams County and City of Natchez offices have a delayed opening Monday, May 13, due to overnight storms causing power loss, water and debris in roadways.

Entergy has over 2,200 power outages reported by Adams County customers. Southwest electric has an additional 2,000 outages reported.

In a community announcement Neifa Hardy, Ph.D., Adams County Emergency Management liaison officer said offices would open at 10 a.m.

Parents with school age children should check with their child’s school about any delayed start or closings, she said.

Residents are cautioned to steer clear of roads that have power lines or water across them.

“If you see any bands of water, turn around and don’t drown,” Hardy said.
