MIAMI — For the umpteenth time this weekend, the crowd at loanDepot park rose to its feet and showered Miguel Cabrera with applause. This time, it was as Cabrera was pinch-run for in the seventh inning, after he worked a walk and chugged around the bases to third.

Cabrera, who is making what can only be dubbed a victory tour in his final Major League season, leaves the city that first made him having put on a show. In the Tigers’ 8-6 loss to the Marlins on Sunday, Cabrera capped a personally momentous series with a 1-for-3 afternoon. He received exuberant applause and an ovation in each of his four plate appearances.

The 12-time All-Star was discovered by the Marlins, who signed the then-16-year-old to a $1.8 million contract in 1999. He made the Majors just four years later, a 20-year-old helping to propel the Marlins to the franchise’s second World Series championship.

On Sunday, it was Cabrera, along with Spencer Torkelson and Javier Báez, who set the tone for the Tigers in the second inning. Torkelson and Báez hit a pair of RBI singles, setting up Cabrera for a two-out, two-run double to give Detroit an early lead for the second time this series.

“The fans here, you know, they love him — and this is where he lives,” Riley Greene said on Saturday. “This is where he started. So you know, it’s a little different vibe here just because it’s Miggy and it’s Miami. It’s awesome. It’s awesome to see all the fans that love him here.”

The Tigers got two more runs in the seventh after Cabrera walked to load the bases behind Báez (single) and Jake Rogers (double). Then, Kerry Carpenter smacked a two-run single that saw Cabrera pumping his arms going for third base. It was then that Detroit opted to pinch-run Akil Baddoo for Cabrera as the Marlins changed pitchers, giving Cabrera the chance for the acknowledgment he deserves from the city where he became a big leaguer, and where he lives in the offseason.

“I think [manager A.J. Hinch made] the right move, because I was tired after that,” Cabrera said, laughing. “No, I try — we try — to be aggressive on the bases. Anytime we got a chance to go first to third we got to do it, and I had a chance right there and I made it.”

“Miggy — he’s an entertainer at heart, and still a big kid,” Hinch said. “Obviously with the runner, we didn’t run for him at first, and I went to [the pinch-runner at] third — there’s just a lot of plays that Baddoo can score that Miggy can’t. But he’s playful as ever. He’s still a kid at heart, and probably thought he was flying around the bases.”

With Baddoo on third, the Tigers had a chance to bolster their 6-5 lead. Perhaps that would have given Detroit’s bullpen something to work with. Instead, the Tigers lost the back-and-forth tug of war and with it, the series in Miami.

“We had plenty of opportunities to win the game, and also couldn’t get out of our own way a couple times,” Hinch said. “… A winnable series that we didn’t win.”

Cabrera finished the weekend, the first two days of which were focused almost wholeheartedly on honoring the legend of Cabrera and other Venezuelan greats, 3-for-10 with two doubles, a run scored and two RBIs. It was one of the rare occasions this season in which Cabrera has played all three games, as Hinch and the Tigers want the best out of the 40-year-old.

“I’m no dummy when it comes to playing him in Miami,” Hinch said pregame Friday. “These are fun environments. Whenever there’s a buzz in the air, you want your players to get that experience. It just brings a little extra out of everybody.”

While the outcome of the weekend wasn’t necessarily what the Tigers wanted, the environment certainly didn’t disappoint — nor did the festivities for Cabrera.

“Oh it’s unbelievable,” Cabrera said of the weekend in Miami. “I want to appreciate everybody, want to say thank you because they gave me something special in my career to remember all my life. It’s gonna be [one of] my top-five moments of my career.”

Around 11:10 a.m., an on-duty MDPD sergeant saw a woman “engaging in a struggle” with a man who was attempting to force her inside of his car in the area of Northwest 35th Avenue and 101st Street in West Little River. The man then fled and while doing so, intentionally struck a marked police vehicle, MDPD told CBS News Miami.

After a brief police chase, the man bailed out of his car near the 2700 block of Northwest 132nd Street in Opa-Locka, prompting officers to run after him. Shortly afterward, he was taken into custody without further incident.

The Line: Washington Nationals -113 / Miami Marlins +103; Over/Under: +8
(Get latest betting odds)

The Miami Marlins and the Washington Nationals meet Sunday in MLB action from Nationals Park. We will look at this from a betting perspective and determine the best bets for this game. Here’s a Washington Nationals vs Miami Marlins Prediction.

Starting Pitching Matchup

The Miami Marlins will send out Jesus Luzardo for the start here and Luzardo is 3-5 with a 5.11 ERA and 56 strikeouts this season. In his last five starts against Washington, Luzardo is 1-1 with a 4.78 ERA and 21 strikeouts. Mitchell Parker will get the start for the Nationals and is 4-3 with a 3.21 ERA and 46 strikeouts this season. This will be Parker’s second career start against Miami.

Miami Marlins Recap

The Miami Marlins will try to salvage something from this series after falling flat in a 4-0 loss in Saturday’s matchup. It was yet another series loss for the Marlins though, following up series losses to the Mets, Guardians and Rays over the last week and a half.

Marlins Still Struggling Offensively

Bryan De La Cruz has 66 hits including 13 doubles, 11 home runs and 30 RBIs while Josh Bell has 12 doubles, 7 home runs and 31 RBIs of his own. Jazz Chisholm Jr. has a team-high 67 hits with 11 doubles, 3 triples, 10 home runs, 33 RBIs and a team-high 13 stolen bases while Jesus Sanchez has 6 stolen bases as well this season.

Why the Miami Marlins will win

  • The Nationals have lost four of their last five games as favorites against NL East opponents following a win.
  • The underdogs have won four of the last six games between the Marlins and Nationals.
  • The road team has covered the run line in 13 of the last 15 games between the Marlins and Nationals.
  • The Nationals have failed to cover the run line in six of their last seven games as favorites against National League opponents following a win.
  • The Nationals have trailed after 5 innings in four of their last six games as favorites against National League opponents.

Washington Nationals Recap

The Washington Nationals come into this one looking to keep the ball rolling and complete the sweep after their win over the Fish on Saturday. The win kept the Nationals series win streak alive after wins over the Tigers and Braves over the last week.

Nationals Starting To Pick It Up At The Plate

CJ Abrams leads the Nationals with 67 hits along with 11 home runs and 36 RBIs to go along with 15 doubles, 5 triples and 10 stolen bases. Luis Garcia Jr. has a team-high 12 doubles with 28 RBIs and 9 stolen bases. Jacob Young has a team-high 17 stolen bases while Lane Thomas has 16 stolen bases and Jesse Winker has 11 stolen bases this season. Joey Meneses also has 36 RBIs as well this season.

Why the Washington Nationals will win

  • The Marlins have lost each of their last 10 games against NL East opponents following a road loss.
  • The favorites have won each of the Marlins’ last 10 games at Nationals Park.
  • The Nationals have covered the run line in each of their last nine games against the Marlins following a win.
  • The Marlins have failed to cover the run line in eight of their last nine games after playing the previous day.
  • The Nationals have led after 5 innings in each of their last five games against the Marlins.
  • The Marlins have trailed after 3 innings in each of their last four day games.
  • The Marlins have lost the first inning in each of their last four day games against NL East opponents.

Washington Nationals vs Miami Marlins Prediction

I’m on the Nationals here. Jesus Luzardo is one of the better pitchers that the Marlins have in that rotation, but once again, as it has been for the last couple of years, run support continues to be an issue as the Marlins simply can’t score enough to help their starting pitchers. I think the Nationals do enough to back up Parker here and to complete the sweep of their division rival in this one. Give me the Nationals at home.

No Messi, no problem! Inter Miami have to cope without absent star and have two men sent off… but STILL manage to score a last-minute winner to beat MLS rivals Philadelphia Union

Despite missing star man Lionel Messi and having two men sent off, Inter Miami produced a sensational late winner to beat the Philadelphia Union.

David Beckham’s team are enjoying a brilliant season after their struggles of last year, and perhaps the best moment of the season came without their World Cup winner on the field.

While Messi is away with Argentina, Gerardo Martino’s team headed to Eastern Conference rivals Philly, and what could have been a disaster turned into a night to remember – especially for one rookie.

Leo Afonso, who has only recently been promoted to the first team after graduating from the academy set-up, became the match-winner in the fourth minute of second-half stoppage time to stun the home crowd.

His first goal for the team came on a night with Messi and Luis Suarez missing from the Miami lineup ahead of Copa America.

Miami also saw David Ruiz and Tomas Aviles each sent off in the second half as both were shown their second yellow cards.

Union, meanwhile, have now lost seven straight games at home – a run stretching back to March 30.

Missing leading scorers Daniel Gazdag and Julian Carranza, the Union opened the scoring in the third minute. Mikael Uhre got on the end of a ball from Jakob Glesnes, beat his defender, and fired it past Drake Callender for his sixth goal of the season.

The Union sought to double their lead in the 13th minute as Quinn Sullivan was put through, but he could only fire wide of the target.

Without Messi and Suarez, Miami initially struggled to find a flow offensively, not being credited with a shot on goal — or a single shot, for that matter — until the 39th minute.

But the breakthrough came in the 47th minute as Julian Gressel ripped a right-footed effort past Oliver Semmle for his first goal of the season, tying the match at 1-1.

After seeing their ranks reduced to nine men — first as David Ruiz was shown his second yellow card in the 69th minute before Tomas Aviles picked up his own second caution in the 88th minute — Miami found an improbable winner through Afonso, snapping a brief two-match winless run in the process.

The victory sees Inter Miami extend their lead at the top of the MLS Eastern Conference, with 11 wins from their first 19 games of the season.
