Fans brawl during Lionel Messi’s latest brilliant performance

Lionel Messi’s brilliant play apparently isn’t a cause for celebration in all corners.
Four fans, including one in an Argentina Messi jersey, brawled Sunday night at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas, during Inter Miami’s shootout win over FC Dallas in the Leagues Cup elimination game.
According to a video posted by Twitter user @vmorriscrypto, a fan in a Messi jersey fought with another spectator in a red-and-white-striped shirt, while one fan in a bucket hat entered the fray while falling to the ground after seeming to be hit from the side by another fan in a white shirt.
The individual wearing the Messi jersey, apparently inspired by a wild MLB brawl between Cleveland Guardians’ Jose Ramirez and Chicago White Sox’s Tim Anderson, continued to throw haymakers at the spectator in the striped shirt.
The Messi supporter went for a headlock on the fan in the striped shirt while the person in the bucket hat made a move toward him and swung wildly, missing his jab.
The fan in the Messi jersey seemingly ducked his head at the right time – it’s hard to tell if it was intentional – and avoided the punch before grabbing the fan in the bucket hat’s right leg.
A fourth spectator re-entered the fray at this point to grab the bucket hat fan’s head.
In his best attempt to imitate Roman Reigns’ performance at SummerSlam, the Messi fan lifted the person in the bucket hat off their feet and dropped them on their back, all the while the individual in the red-and-white-striped shirt had their arms wrapped around the Messi supporter.
Just like Sunday’s match, the victory clearly went to the fan in the Argentina Messi jersey.

The nine-second clip does not say when this fight occurred but it provided off-the-field fireworks to complement Messi’s on-the-field prowess.
Perhaps the fans were irritable due to the heat with the Associated Press reporting a kickoff temperature of 100 degrees during Dallas’ heatwave.
Messi scored two goals, including the game-tying goal in the 85th minute, to lift Miami to its fourth straight victory since he joined the team.
Miami and Messi next play in the Leagues Cup’s quarterfinals either Friday or Saturday against the winner between Charlotte FC and Houston Dynamo FC, who meet Monday night in Texas.

Police: 2 passengers dead after driver opens fire on Miami-Dade Transit bus

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – An investigation is ongoing after a shooting occurred on a Miami-Dade County Transit bus.
It happened early Sunday morning outside a shopping plaza on the corner of Miami Gardens Drive and Northwest Seventh Avenue.
Miami Gardens police roped off the entire shopping plaza right next to the area where that bus was parked.
According to police, all of this started around 3 a.m. when officers responded to a disturbance call.
Investigators say the driver of that Miami-Dade Transit bus got into an argument or disagreement of some sort with passengers who were onboard.
At some point, police said the driver pulled out a gun and opened fire, hitting two of the passengers.
Both victims, who are men, were rushed to HCA Florida Aventura Hospital by helicopter in critical condition, but both would later be pronounced dead.
At this point, police say the bus driver is being detained by officers as they conduct their investigation, though it is not clear if he will face any charges.
What led up to the fight is unclear, and officers have not been able to say whether the passengers were armed with any weapons of their own.

Inter Miami player ratings vs Philadelphia Union: Lionel Messi returns with a bang as Herons move atop Supporters' Shield standings | Goal.com

The Herons kept their unbeaten start to 2025 alive, courtesy of a second-half winner from the Argentine superstar
Lionel Messi returned to competitive action for Inter Miami on Saturday evening, coming off the bench to score a brilliant solo goal in a 2-1 win over the Philadelphia Union. The victory sent the Herons to the top of both the MLS Supporters’ Shield standings and the Eastern Conference.
In a matchup between the league’s top two teams entering Matchday 6, Miami and Philadelphia delivered a thrilling contest, with Javier Mascherano’s side emerging victorious.
The hosts struck first when Finland international Robert Taylor finished off a well-worked move midway through the first half. A pinpoint Jordi Alba cross found U.S. international Benjamin Cremaschi, who set up Taylor for a one-time finish in the box.
Trailing at halftime, the Union brought on U.S. international Indiana Vassilev, but 10 minutes later, Messi entered the fray – and wasted no time making his mark.
Just two minutes after coming on, the Argentine received a pass from Luis Suárez, danced through defenders with dazzling footwork, and slotted home a stunning finish to double Miami’s lead.
Philadelphia fought back, pulling one back in the 80th minute when Daniel Gazdag converted a cross from U.S. youth international Quinn Sullivan – older brother of teenage phenom Cavan. But it wasn’t enough, as Miami held firm to secure the win.
The match was heated, with the hosts picking up seven yellow cards, but the three points were crucial in keeping Miami atop the standings.
Now, the Herons face a quick turnaround as they prepare to take on LAFC in the CONCACAF Champions Cup quarterfinals on Tuesday. If Saturday’s performance was any indication, they remain as dangerous as ever.

How a Former Dolphins Coach Helped Davis Become a Ball Hawk

Despite limited playing time, new Dolphins safety Ashtyn Davis has made the most of his opportunities, snagging eight interceptions in just 22 starts over five seasons with the New York Jets.
Meeting with the Miami media for the first time this past week, Davis was asked what fuels his playmaking ability. Looking back on his position switch at California, the 2020 third-round pick credited former Dolphins assistant coach Gerald Alexander with shaping his ball-hawking instincts.
“‘G.A.’ was monumental in my development,” Davis said of their three seasons together at California. “I switched from corner to safety around the time that he got there, and the guy would meet with me every single day early in the morning and just got me right.”
Davis earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors as a junior, his first season at safety. He snagged four interceptions in 13 games, a jump from just one in 24 games at corner, while also tallying 56 tackles and five passes defended.
He carried that momentum into his senior season with the Golden Bears, landing on the second-team All-Pac-12 roster after career highs in tackles (57), forced fumbles (2), and fumble recoveries (2) in 2019.
“I had an amazing college coach that emphasized getting the football and made that a priority,” Davis said of Alexander. “Whether it’s a run or pass play, I’m just trying to get that football.”
Alexander’s playing career began as a 2007 second-round pick of the Detroit Lions. He spent five seasons in the league, playing two games with the Dolphins in 2011. He started his coaching journey as a student assistant at Arkansas State in 2013 and spent three seasons at California (2017-19). He returned to Miami in 2020 for two seasons as defensive backs coach under Brian Flores.
The Dolphins will be happy to no longer be facing Davis, who recorded four of his eight interceptions for the Jets against Miami. That included his one two-interception game, which came in the 2024 season finale at MetLife Stadium.
“That game was an interesting one,” Davis said. “It was the end of the year, and we knew our playoff hopes were obviously gone so we just went out there and had fun. I think on the second interception I pitched it to D.J. (Reed) and we’d been doing that in practice, they were not happy about it, but we just said we were going to go out there and have fun and we had a blast, and I think it showed. The whole defense was playing loose, and I think, I don’t know – that was definitely up there. That was probably my favorite game that I’ve played in in the league.”
The Dolphins added Davis and Ifeatu Melifonwu early in free agency after Jevon Holland agreed to a three-year deal with the New York Giants. Elijah Campbell also re-signed and Patrick McMorris, a sixth-round pick last season, remains in the mix. With 10 picks in the 2025 draft, Miami’s safety room is far from settled.
When asked if he’d help the younger players — specifically McMorris, who was also drafted out of Cal and whose brother was a college teammate — Davis said he plans to follow in Alexander’s footsteps as a mentor.
“I feel like that’s my role as a teammate, is to help other people, especially young guys figure it out in the league,” Davis said. “Your career here a lot of times is very short, so I think you want to maximize that, so I’m here to help guys.”
