Georgia nonprofit empowering next generation through dance
ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – It takes a team to put on a show.
“It gives me a real-life perspective of the dance world because this is what I want to do when I get older,” said 17 years old Chloe Draper.
Dance Canvas is a non-profit that exists to get people into the arts and to increase awareness of professional dance.
“We find ways to engage our community, all different ages, all different skill levels. We find ways to use dance as a vehicle to teach leadership, and community,” said Angela Harris, Executive Artistic Director at Dance Canvas.
That is what these high school and college dancers are learning, how to put on a production, from the lighting to theater tech to the performance itself.
“I have been involved with this program since I was in the 8th grade and I have loved every bit of it,” said 21-year-old Mackenzy Jordan.
The organization has a program called DC Next. It is a three-week summer program, designed to teach dancers the ins and outs of the business.
“We spend three weeks working with them on resumes, working with them on jobs. researching colleges, they get headshots, they practice auditioning,” said Harris.
Participants learn how to take a craft they love and make it a career and how to take lessons from dance and apply them to life.

Southern Georgia severe thunderstorm watch in effect
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) — A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for most southern Georgia counties in our local region, plus Jackson County, Fla., until 8:00 this evening.
Scattered rain and thunderstorms are forecast to move southeast from central Alabama and the Chattahoochee River region. These storms will carry spots of downpours and excessive lightning. Severe-weather elements that are possible include large hail and stronger wind gusts that can cause some damage in affected neighborhoods.
Please have multiple ways to get alerts for warnings as the storm activity moves through Saturday afternoon and evening toward the state line.
Sporadic power outages are also possible, so it’s a wise idea to have all electronic devices are charged.

Georgia couple sentenced to prison for abusing 8-week-old son
A Georgia couple were sentenced to a year and a half in prison following their conviction for repeatedly abusing their 8-week-old son.
A Pike County jury found Tarilyn Allie Lester Alexander and Joseph Tyler Alexander guilty of eight counts of aggravated battery and four counts of first-degree cruelty to children earlier this month, according to Fox 5 Atlanta.
In the seven weeks since the child was released from the hospital, he began to show bruising on his face and genitals and broken blood vessels in his eyes, according to evidence shown to the court. By 8-weeks-old, the boy had suffered 11 broken bones and hemorrhages in both eyes.
The boy “suffered horrific abuse on multiple occasions,” officials said.

The Alexanders were unable to explain what happened to the child when questioned about his injuries.
Doctors, while investigating the case, diagnosed the baby with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, an illness caused by defects in collagen that leads to serious joint problems. Several doctors who treat patients with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos testified that the syndrome does not cause injuries like the ones the baby had suffered from.
“The victim has not had one single broken bone since he was removed from the defendants’ care,” the District Attorney for the Griffin Judicial Circuit said in a statement.

The jury found the Alexanders guilty on 12 of 16 counts. The judge sentenced them to a year and a half behind bars and 15 years of probation.
When they are released from prison, the two will be allowed to have contact with their son.
