Coastal Communities in Delaware praise Marine Corps project that builds and maintains dunes and beaches – 47abc
DELAWARE- With the remnants of Hurricane Ian heading up the east coast, Delaware’s Coastal cities are feeling grateful for the funding that’s been spent to construct up the sand dunes and seashore replenishment within the space.
5 initiatives are at present carried out by the US Military Corps of Engineers Philadelphia Department within the area, which see man-made dunes constructed subsequent to the property alongside the seashore to insulate the weak areas from storm surges, flooding, and heavy erosion.
Cities on the coast say these programs give them confidence forward of the storms this weekend.
“The dunes are constructed for any such occasion, they carry out precisely as they’re speculated to they usually present that stage of that safety for the folks, infrastructure, and belongings right here alongside the coast,” mentioned Rehoboth Seashore Public Works Director Kevin Williams.
He tells 47ABC, this climate is anticipated to be much less extreme for the seashore areas in comparison with this 12 months’s Mom’s Day Storm and final 12 months’s Halloween storm, a sentiment shared by Dewey Seashore’s city supervisor, who says the undertaking has essentially modified the danger the city faces from storms.
“30 years in the past there have been no dunes, we used to get storms like this it will come throughout the ocean, meet the bay, and utterly flood route one, we not have that situation from the ocean due to the dunes and replenishment,” mentioned Dewey Seashore City Supervisor Invoice Zolper.
The dunes are depleted on this course of and do should be rebuilt, however the US Military Corp says that’s all a part of the plan, and it’s simpler to rebuild dunes, in comparison with property.
“When the storm is available in it strikes the sand and erodes away the protecting system nevertheless it doesn’t injury, it in the meantime the property that might have been broken is protected,” mentioned Military Corps Philadelphia Department spokesman Ed Voigt.
However for cities like Lewes; whereas properties may be protected, not all the seashore is so fortunate.
“There’s a giant portion that doesn’t obtain sand and people areas are a priority as a result of they’re dropping and getting narrower over time,” mentioned Lewes City Supervisor Ann Marie Townshend.
The subsequent spherical of seashore nourishment is anticipated to happen this winter.

East Coast Has a New Drought Worry
Salty ocean water is creeping up the Delaware River, the source for much of the drinking water for Philadelphians and millions of others, brought on by drought conditions and sea level rise, and prompting officials to tap reservoirs to push the unpotable tide back downstream. Officials say drinking water isn’t imminently at risk yet, but they’re monitoring the effects of the drought on the river and studying options for the future in case further droughts sap the area, per the AP.
- What is the salt front? The salt front, or salt line, is where salt water from the ocean and fresh water meet in the river. That boundary is typically somewhere around Wilmington, Delaware, but the recent drought has pushed it about 20 miles north.
