Miami U. student gets probation following incident outside Oxford bar

Video from previous coverage.

OXFORD, Ohio (WXIX) – A Miami University student received probation for charges stemming from an incident outside an Oxford bar in November.

A jury previously found Devin Johnson guilty of assault and resisting arrest but did not find him guilty of underage drinking, according to the Butler County Clerk’s Office.

Johnson was sentenced to 180 days suspended jail time for each charge and then also given one year of probation for his conviction on assault and resisting arrest, court records show. Two other charges, underage possession and criminal trespassing, were dropped.

Johnson and Officer Matthew Blauvelt were the focus of a TikTok video that went viral and police used in their investigation following an incident outside Brick Street Bar on Nov. 18, 2023.

The 20-year-old Johnson was hit several times by Blauvelt outside the bar after employees had pulled him from the establishment and held him on the ground.

Police say Johnson had sneaked into the bar underage and refused to leave, which led to a struggle between him and employees and law enforcement to be called.

Security video of the arrest went viral after it was posted online by a family member, which prompted Blauvelt to be placed on leave while the incident was investigated.

Attorneys David Williamson and Jonathan Hollingsworth were hired as special counsel to review Johnson’s arrest.

Blauvelt’s actions were justified, Williamson and Hollingsworth concluded.

The Butler County Sheriff’s Office and prosecutor’s office also found Blauvelt’s actions reasonable in earlier reviews.
