Razorbacks Head To Michigan For ITA Kickoff Weekend
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas women’s tennis team (2-0) travels north to face Purdue (3-0) on Friday at the ITA Kickoff Weekend as part of a four-team regional hosted by Michigan. The Hogs will take on the Boilermakers at 12 p.m. CT at the Varsity Tennis Center and either No. 5 Michigan (1-1) or Utah (3-0) on Saturday.
Arkansas and Purdue have previously matched up against each other six times with the Boilermakers leading the series 4-2.
The winners of Friday’s matches will clash on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. CT, vying for a spot at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Seattle, Wash., from Feb. 9-12 at the University of Washington. The championship match will be played prior to the consolation match at 5:30 p.m. CT.
The Razorbacks are off to a 2-0 start this spring with two sweeps over Bradley in their doubleheader last Saturday. The Hogs have carried over their dominating doubles performances from last season, convincingly taking the doubles point in both matches. Graduate Kelly Keller claimed the first singles point in the first match with a 6-0, 6-0 victory while going 2-0 at the No. 1 position. The senior duo of Morgan Cross and Indianna Spink impressed in their season debut, grabbing two wins in the top spot of the doubles lineup.
Purdue is off to a perfect start this spring as well, defeating Ball State, Miami (OH), and Xavier. The Boilermakers are led by senior Csilla Fodor and sophomore No. 113 Carmen Gallardo Guevara, who both have three singles wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, respectively. Sophomore Kennedy Gibbs has also secured three singles wins at the No. 3 position for Purdue. The tandem of Fodor and Gibbs are 2-0 in doubles at the No. 1 position while Gallardo Guevara and junior Tara Katarina Milic also hold a 2-0 record on court two.
No. 5 Michigan opened its season in the Sooner State, falling to then-No. 5 Oklahoma State and defeating No. 13 Oklahoma. The Wolverines’ singles lineup consists of four ranked players in No. 10 Kari Miller, No. 39 Julia Fliegner, No. 47 Lily Jones, and No. 82 Gala Mesochoritou. Miller and Jaedan Brown combine to form the No. 8-ranked doubles pair and are currently 2-0 at the No. 1 position this spring.
Utah has started the season 3-0, earning sweeps over Montana State, Utah Tech, and Idaho State. Marcela Lopez and Kaila Barksdale lead the Utes with three singles wins each at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, respectively. Arkansas basketball guard Karter Knox probable to face South Carolina
FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas basketball sophomore Karter Knox is probable to play against South Carolina, according to the SEC Availability Report released on Tuesday, Jan. 13.
John Calipari said Knox suffered a hip pointer injury during the No. 17 Razorbacks (12-4, 2-1 SEC) 95-73 loss to Auburn over the weekend. Arkansas returns to action against the Gamecocks on Wednesday, Jan. 14.
Calipari said he didn’t know the exact moment when Knox was hurt against Auburn, but it occurred during the first period as Knox did not play after halftime. He finished the night with zero points in seven minutes.
During his weekly radio show on Monday, Jan. 12, Calipari confirmed Knox had not practiced since the loss to Auburn.
This is not the first time Knox has dealt with an injury this season. He missed the opening game of the year with a toe sprain. The second-year guard is averaging 8.6 points and five rebounds while shooting a team-best 43.5% from 3-point range.
If Knox can play, he would get the chance to go against his older brother for the first time in their respective college careers. Kobe Knox is a redshirt senior at South Carolina after transferring from South Florida before the season.
If something changes before tipoff and Karter is sidelined, one of Billy Richmond III or Meleek Thomas will start against the Gamecocks.
Richmond would be a seamless replacement on the defensive end, although he is not as good of an outside shooter. Richmond is averaging 8.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.5 assists.
Thomas would be the aggressive pick on offense. The five-star freshman is Arkansas’ second-leading scorer with 15.4 points per game.
The biggest question is whether Calipari would go deeper into his bench to replace Knox in Arkansas’ eight-man rotation. Isaiah Sealy has been the Hogs’ ninth man this season, but he’s only averaging 8.9 minutes and has appeared in four games since the beginning of December.
