Vote for the girls Vermont Varsity Insider Athlete of the Week: Feb. 3-9

Welcome to the sixth installment of the 2024-25 winter season for the expanded Vermont Varsity Insider Athletes of the Week voting by high school sports fans.

This week, and every week during the sports seasons, members of the public may vote for a top girls athlete and a top boys athlete. And starting this season, we’re adding to the list of weekly nominees: There will be two stories, one for girls and one for boys, with more athletes on each ballot.

How do I cast my vote?

All voting is through the two ballots at burlingtonfreepress.com. We will not accept votes through email or through social media.

Voting began Feb. 10 and continues through 11:59 p.m. Thursday.

How do we learn who wins?

The winners will be announced in a story published at burlingtonfreepress.com on Friday.

May I nominate a deserving athlete for a future ballot?

Girls Athlete of the Week nominees

More on this week’s candidates:

Lily Bucklin, Stowe hockey: After tallying a goal and two assists in a 3-0 win over Woodstock, Bucklin totaled the same stat line in a 9-1 decision over Brattleboro.

Kali Cushing, BFA-St. Albans hockey: Cushing scored once in a 2-1 decision over Middlebury and produced a two-goal game in a 3-2 overtime win over Champlain Valley/Mount Mansfield.

Mya Forkey, Rice alpine skiing: Forkey claimed the individual win at the Slopeside Cup Slalom held at Cochran’s Ski Area, with a two-run combined time of 1 minute, 23.55 seconds.

Peyton Guay, West Rutland basketball: The senior became the state’s all-time leading scorer when she dropped 20 points Saturday as the Golden Horde handed Hazen its first defeat this winter. Guay has 2,117 career points entering the week of Feb. 10.

Braylee Phelps, Oxbow basketball: After a 23-point outing in a 58-34 win over Harwood, Phelps poured in 31 points as the Olympians cruised past Lyndon 79-42.

Sophia Rockwood, Windsor basketball: In a 2-1 week, Rockwood went for 23 points, three steals and three blocks in a 49-46 win over Hartford, tallied 16 points, three assists and two steals in a 36-20 victory over Mount Anthony, and then reached 1,000 career points with a 16-point effort during a 51-46 setback to Fair Haven.

Taylor Senecal, Essex hockey: The senior’s two goals helped Essex dispatch Spaulding on the road, 3-0. She then ignited the rally in a 4-2 win over Rice, scoring twice in a 30-second span of the third period to erase a deficit.

Zoe Zanleoni, Hartford hockey: Zanleoni pumped in five goals as Hartford cruised past Burr and Burton 9-2. She then tucked away two goals in a 5-0 shutout of Harwood.

Journalism leaders and advocates fill Montpelier’s Kellogg-Hubbard Library for a fact-forward fête celebrating the value of civic transparency and trusted community information. Aly Richards announces run for Vt. governor

NEWBURY, Vt. (WCAX) – A new face joins the race for Vermont governor.

Aly Richards, the former CEO of Lets Grow Kids, will hold her campaign announcement on Monday morning.

Richards has spent the last decade advocating for affordable child care in Vermont, including pushing for the state’s landmark child care law.

Richards’ campaign announcement will take place in her hometown of Newbury at 11 a.m.

Vermont ends cold weather hotel assistance for 160 households

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – About 160 households will no longer receive hotel rooms following the end of cold weather rules for the state’s General Assistance program this week.

Anti-homeless advocates said last year the federal government authorized Vermont to use state Medicaid funds for a program that could supplement rent for people at risk of homelessness.

State leaders this week said that is not an option as Vermont is still building the program.

Vermont Human Services Secretary Jenney Samuelson said at a press conference this week the waiver gives the authority, not the funding or infrastructure to build the program.

“The state would need to put up significant investments including enrolling housing providers, landlords, developing and building IT systems,” Samuelson said. “These steps require significant time and resources.”

The state legislature and Governor Scott’s administration have been trying to wind down the use of hotels and instead ramp up shelters to get people back on their feet.
