The Pittsburgh Steelers are all in on signing Aaron Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers seem destined for one another. Even with the New York Giants still involved after signing Jameis Winston, the Steelers and Rodgers are making progress in the right direction.
Jeremy Fowler of ESPN says the Steelers’ pursuit of Rodgers is a little different than any other free agent they have gone after this year, and more than that, they are aggressively going after Rodgers.
Essentially, the team has not completely closed the door on Russell Wilson, but it certainly does not seem like there is any momentum in that direction. Instead, the Steelers are all in on Rodgers.
“He spent all day there … just more of a ‘get to know’, exploratory session,” Fowler said. “They weren’t talking hard numbers. They’ve already got a contract offer standing out to Rogers in place, so they talked about fit. He met with offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, Mike Tomlin, owner Art Rooney, (and) GM Omar Khan. In fact, I was told the Steelers wanted to make this meeting happen so much, they skipped Michigan’s pro day yesterday, which if you know the Steelers, that’s a big deal. I checked with the team source that said they’re aggressively pursuing this. He’s number one on their radar”
The Steelers’ visit with Rodgers went well and both sides came out of thinking positively about each other, Adam Schefter reported. Earlier this week, the Steelers and Rodgers opened a line of communication with one another after things had largely been silent the week prior, and it seems Rodgers is nearing a decision.

Steelers Have Fix for Last Defensive Hole

The Pittsburgh Steelers refrained from splurging for a top-end talent on the interior of the defensive line in free agency, leaving them with a hole at the position heading into the NFL Draft.
General manager Omar Khan appears confident in the team’s current assortment of options there, however, which may have influenced that decision.
“I like the group we have,” Khan said at the NFL league meetings. “We did sign [Daniel] Ekuale, he’s done some really good things. Logan Lee is healthy, he has a chance to step up and be a part of it. But you know, I feel good about some of the guys we have on the line.”
Ekuale is the Steelers’ highest-profile addition, per se, at defensive tackle so far this offseason. He agreed to a one-year deal worth $2.8 million with the team on March 16 after starting 16 games for the New England Patriots in 2024, during which he logged 52 tackles.
The 31-year-old is entering the seventh year of his career and should provide valuable depth as a solid run defender. He is among the current favorites to start alongside Cameron Heyward and Keeanu Benton following Larry Ogunjobi’s release, but Pittsburgh rosters a bevy of other veterans such as Montravius Adams and Dean Lowry who may also push for snaps.
With Lee, who missed his entire rookie campaign last year due to a calf injury, and Isaiahh Loudermilk back in the fold as well, there’s plenty of players on the depth chart who will have opportunities to prove themselves this summer.
The issue, however, is that Pittsburgh doesn’t have a clear long-term starter in place beyond Heyward and Benton. Head coach Mike Tomlin isn’t panicking though, as he believes there’s plenty of time before the draft to sort the situation out before declaring the position as a true need.
“You know, I think that we’re open to acquiring good players at all positions, and I don’t know that we’ve placed a pecking order, if you will, on positional needs as we sit here today,” Tomlin said. “I’m not saying that we won’t, I’m just saying that there’s a lot of time between now and the Draft, and oftentimes the information that we collect between now and then, whether it’s us or the needs of other people or the depths of the pools at the positions, a lot of things go into to weighing the ‘need’ component, and so we’re just not there yet.”
The expectation is that the Steelers will select a defensive tackle with one of their first picks, as Michigan’s Kenneth Grant and Oregon’s Derrick Harmon are potential first-round targets. Furthermore, there should be enticing prospects left on the board come Day 2 as well.
While there’s still work left to do, it doesn’t appear as though Khan or Tomlin feel pressured to find a solution and will examine the circumstances closely before making a significant move.

Man charged after dozens of vehicles caught drag racing in Pittsburgh parking lot

A man is facing charges after police said they found drugs and a stolen gun in his car after breaking up a large gathering of drag racers in Pittsburgh’s Lawrenceville neighborhood.
Pittsburgh police said officers were sent to the 200 block of 48th Street for reports of cars drag racing in a business parking lot on March 14. Once they got there, police said they found about 50 to 60 vehicles “engaged in various illegal activities,” including street racing, reckless driving and trespassing.
When officers turned on their lights and sirens, police said everyone ran to their cars and left. Police said they pulled over one vehicle that had sped off towards a large grass field in an attempt to get away.
While speaking to the driver, 23-year-old William Bey, police said they learned he had an expired driver’s license and registration. Before Bey’s car was towed, police said they conducted an inventory search to make sure any valuables inside were documented.
After finding a large bag of marijuana under the driver’s seat, police said they applied for a search warrant and found several other items, including a stolen firearm.
Bey was charged with receiving stolen property, persons not to possess, prohibited acts and vehicle violations.

Mike Tomlin gives huge hint on Pittsburgh Steelers’ draft plans
PALM BEACH, Fla. — Mike Tomlin is not one to give away the secret sauce, but he does drop hints, and he may have given one to the Pittsburgh Steelers’ draft thoughts this year. Talking about Keeanu Benton’s versatility, Tomlin hinted that the team wants versatile players along their defensive line early in the NFL Draft.
More importantly, he talked about how Benton’s versatility allows him to stay on the football field no matter what, and that could give a key hint to their draft plans.
“He [Keeanu Benton] has versatility, but that’s why we took him that high, particularly in today’s game, [there’s] not a lot of nose [tackle] play in today’s game, based on matchups and so forth. I think we spend about 80% of our time in sub-package football. And so, his versatility is an asset to him and us where he’s not reduced by offensive personnel that’s potentially on the field or not,” Tomlin said.
That quote seems innocuous, but it basically all but rules out a two-down nose tackle in the first round. If the Steelers do draft a nose tackle, that player will be capable of going out to a 3-technique and perhaps further in sub-packages.
That will mean if the Steelers do draft Kenneth Grant, it will not be because they see him as a nose tackle that can bump their run defense, but also as a pass rusher who gives them utility in sub-packages that they play in the most.
It does not rule out Grant, but if the team thinks Grant is simply a run stuffer and only a two down player, it makes it a lot less likely they would take him, and far likelier they would look at Walter Nolen and Derrick Harmon.
