PennDOT provides update on Route 28 construction project in Pittsburgh
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – KDKA-TV spoke to PennDOT regarding the Route 28 construction project in Pittsburgh and when it is supposed to be finished.
It is going to end, PennDOT promised, but one part that was supposed to open soon is going to take a bit longer. A new twist to the project went into effect Tuesday as well.
According to Jason Zang, PennDOT District 11’s assistant executive of construction, the northbound 28 mainline would be opening to two lanes in mid-October, but a change was made to wait for both sides to be completed.
“We’re going to keep that in a single-lane restriction until we get done with the southbound traffic. So, both northbound and southbound mainline 28 are going to be single lane until roughly the end of the year,” he said.
The contractor said they still have median barrier work to do too.
“So, they decided that it was going to be safer to do the work, just keeping it that way, given the workers’ protection behind a barrier,” Zang added.
On the southbound side of Route 28, there is still a hole in need of concrete.
“That’s going to be poured here this one in the next month. So, yeah, that’s like the last huge bulk of the work that in that medium barrier right there,” Zang said.
What is not waiting is the new traffic light that went into operation Tuesday. Now, when someone comes northbound across the Highland Park Bridge to get onto Route 28 or come up the ramp from Sharpsburg and Aspinwall, they will come to the new signal.
Yes, that means a full-stop red light, which PennDOT says is necessary in the name of safety.
Anyone who has driven through that intersection knows it can be nail-biting trying to merge. The new light eliminates that risk and the accidents that have occurred there. It is a very busy ramp and PennDOT acknowledges it could back up traffic onto the bridge during rush hours, but it should make the merge point safer.

Former First-Round Pick Gets Revenge on Steelers
PITTSBURGH — Former Pittsburgh Steelers first-round pick Devin Bush got his revenge against his former team, winning the first of two matchups with the Cleveland Browns in the AFC North battle.
Bush was sent out for the coin toss to start the game, showing the Browns’ interest in making this a revenge atmosphere. The former 10th-overall for Pittsburgh didn’t get a second contract, and was booed out of town by fans after his fourth season. In his first AFC North showdown on the other side of the rivalry, he recorded six tackles for Cleveland.
Bush’s time with the Steelers started with a bang, and the star out of Michigan looked like the missing piece to Pittsburgh’s defense. He was viewed as the “finally” inside linebacker to replace Ryan Shazier, but after an ACL tear, things faded. By the time his final season wrapped up, he was on the bench as much as he was on the field, losing his job to Robert Spillane and Mark Robinson.
Last season, Bush signed a one-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks but didn’t do much in his one year in the NFC. This offseason, he visited the Browns, where he signed a deal shortly after. Now, despite a 3-8 record in Cleveland, he’s probably feeling pretty good as he walks away a winner in his first matchup against the Steelers in 2024.

New Houston Astros Trade Idea Buys Low On Embattled Pittsburgh Pirates Slugger
The Houston Astros need offensive help in the outfield and will need find a value-forward option in the trade market to do so.
One such player is Pittsburgh Pirates slugger Bryan De La Cruz.
He was a deadline addition last year for the Pirates and saw a sharp decline in play after the deal was made.
Tim Kelly of Bleacher Report now has De La Cruz as the most likely Pittsburgh player to be shipped out this winter.
That leaves the Astros open to swoop in and grab a player who still has a bit of potential for a low price. A possible deal between the two teams could see Houston send prospects Zach Cole and Jackson Nezuh to the Pirates in exchange for the struggling slugger.
De La Cruz posted a disappointing .200/220/.294 slash line over the final 44 games of the 2024 season. It may seem odd to trade for a guy coming off of such a cold stretch, but just a few months ago, he was on All-Star alert and on the verge of a potential 30-plus home run campaign.
Over the first 105 games of the year as a member of the Miami Marlins, he had a much better slash line of .245/.289/.417 with 18 home runs and 51 RBI.
He was one of the few players worth watching in the Marlins lineup this past season.
The 27-year-old debuted back in 2021 and still has a lot of room to grow. If The Astros can get his development turned back around into a positive direction, they could find a serious value with him.
Going back to Jake Meyers, Mauricio Dubon and Chas McCormick alongside Kye Tucker would simply not be acceptable for Houston next season, so they will need to be proactive in upgrading the lineup.
While they don’t have a ton of trade capital in their farm system, they could combine a couple of prospects to entice a team.
Cole is kind of the opposite of De La Cruz.
He’s an incredible defensive presence who can steal bases but doesn’t have much promise at the plate.
Even if the 24-year-old gets called up next year, that isn’t the type of player the Astros need right now.
Nezuh looksed solid in his first professional campaign with a 4.19 ERA and 11.3 K/9.
He is already looking more refined than he did in college, so Houston could do a quick flip of the prospect while the value is growing.
