Oregon Continues Pushing for 5-Star QB Jaden Rashada

Pittsburg (Calif.) quarterback Jaden Rashada has been everywhere in the nation taking visits this spring, and he additionally punched his ticket to the Elite 11 finals after a powerful exhibiting towards the most effective passers in Las Vegas. Over the weekend Rashada made his manner out to Eugene for an unofficial go to to Oregon, an vital journey after the Geese could not get him on campus for the spring sport.

Here is what I have been instructed concerning the go to from a supply near Rashada’s recruitment. It is not a ton, however I am making an attempt to present you all essentially the most that I can collect.

The go to went effectively in Rashada’s eyes and throughout the journey he obtained to spend time with Dan Lanning, a optimistic growth as Kenny Dillingham has been the lead recruiter in Oregon’s pursuit after getting employed.

I have been instructed that Florida will get an official go to from Rashada after the Gators provided in early April. Florida has come on VERY robust on this recruitment and is a critical contender to control.

Torres’ Take

It was good for Oregon to get Rashada again on campus, particularly in an unofficial capability as they push for an official go to over the following month. Optically, it is one other good signal that he reduce his checklist of colleges right down to seven proper after the journey, implying that he is seen what he is wanted to to be able to know what faculties are legit contenders.

Spending time with Lanning was essential, as numerous high recruits need that robust relationship with their future head coach.

Nevertheless, the extra I dig into this recruitment it feels to me like Ole Miss might be within the driver’s seat after receiving his first official go to again in late April. The Texas A&M supply actually makes this one attention-grabbing and I’ve heard repeatedly that he is very intrigued by the big-time soccer that comes with taking part in within the SEC, additional evidenced by his current string of visits to LSU, Ole Miss and Arkansas, which has since landed a quarterback and been eradicated.

It seems to be probably that Texas A&M will get one in all his 4 remaining official visits. That leaves Florida because the third, and two extra up for grabs, with Oregon, LSU and Miami battling to get him again on campus earlier than his dedication, which is about for June 18.

The timing of the officers shall be one other issue to watch, as everyone knows how vital the ultimate go to may be main as much as a dedication. Rashada is among the most vital recruits for the Geese in 2023 not simply because he is a quarterback, but additionally as a result of he is a high West Coast prospect in California, a state that ought to be Oregon’s candy spot regardless of current invasion by different high packages nationally.

The Geese are additionally closely recruiting Detroit quarterback Dante Moore, who’s taken current journeys to Oregon, LSU, Notre Dame and Florida this spring. Notre Dame has been seen as the favourite for some time in that recruitment, and Moore has but to set a dedication date.

Oregon has additionally began to supply different quarterbacks within the 2023 class akin to Avery Johnson from Wichita, Kansas and Aidan Chiles from Downey in Southern California.

Chiles earned quarterback MVP honors on the current ESPN Elite Underclassmen camp in Oakland over the weekend, and Johnson mentioned the Geese will get an official go to following the Elite 11 camp in Nashville. We’ll have extra on him later in the present day.

Pirates Taking Careful Approach With Returning Pitcher

Pirates Taking Careful Approach With Returning Pitcher

The Pittsburgh Pirates will have some difficult decisions to make with their starting rotation in 2025.

One pitcher who could vie for the fifth spot in the rotation is right-handed pitcher Johan Oviedo. Oviedo is returning from Tommy John surgery last November and made 32 starts for the Pirates in 2023. While the 26-year-old right-hander may very well work his way into becoming Pittsburgh’s fifth starter, manager Derek Shelton said his team will take an abundance of caution with Oviedo next season.

“Oviedo, we’re going to have to be thoughtful because he’s coming off Tommy John,” Shelton said at the Winter Meetings. “So there is going to be some sort of innings that we have to benchmark and watch for.”

Oviedo was acquired in a rare division trade with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2022 after he spent the first half of the season going back and forth between the Major Leagues and Triple-A Memphis. In his seven starts for Pittsburgh in 2022, he went 2-2 with a 3.23 ERA. Oviedo asserted himself in the starting rotation in 2023 and had a solid yet unspectacular season, going 9-14 with a 4.31 ERA over 32 starts and he struck out 158 batters in his 177.2 innings pitched. His control was detrimental throughout the season, though, as he posted a 1.9 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Oviedo had 15 outings where he walked at least three batters and led baseball with 13 hit-by-pitches hit in 2023. The right-hander showed signs of turning things around in the second half, as he went 6-4 with a 3.72 ERA in 77.1 innings pitched over 14 starts.

Oviedo’s path to the starting rotation is much less clear with the emergence of 2024 Rookie of the Year Paul Skenes and Jared Jones. Bailey Falter also proved to be a solid option and Mitch Keller has been the Pirates’ most consistent pitcher over the last two seasons. Along with the four pitchers who already appear to be entrenched in the rotation for 2025, Pittsburgh also boasts three top-100 prospects in MLB Pipeline’s rankings, Bubba Chandler, Braxton Ashcraft and Thomas Harrington.

All three right-handed pitching prospects reached Triple-A Indianapolis last season, so their debuts could be right around the corner in 2025.

Oviedo’s experience in the bullpen could come in handy, especially with the Pirates wanting to manage his innings in his first season back from Tommy John surgery. Oviedo has made 14 appearances out of the bullpen in his career. The Pirates bullpen more than needs the help, as they had the fourth-highest ERA in baseball last season.

Whether it’s as a starting pitcher or a reliever, how the Pirates manage Oviedo’s innings will be among the topics of discussion entering 2025. If he can assert himself as one of the Pirates’ five best starting pitchers in Spring Training, an already strong rotation could be even deeper next season.
