How the Owner of a Vietnamese Bakery Spends Her Sundays

Nowadays, Doris Ho-Kane is continually filling cookie tins with confections that includes coconut pandan, black sesame ube and tamarind cacao nib. In 2019, Ms. Ho-Kane, a pastry chef who used to work in vogue, began promoting Vietnamese treats she made in her residence kitchen by an Instagram enterprise known as Bạn Bè. “It simply blew up from there,” she mentioned.

By the next yr, she had secured a storefront with a kitchen in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn. Whereas Ms. Ho-Kane continues to be “in very heavy tin manufacturing,” she mentioned, she additionally likes to create a special dessert, like a sticky rice banana cake or a dessert soup, which clients can pattern on the retailer or typically pre-order on Instagram, each different weekend.

She lives in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, along with her husband, Mark Ho-Kane, 43, an artist and composer, and their three youngsters, ages 2, 6 and eight.

BREAKFAST BUFFET I often get up an hour earlier than I do know my youngsters might be up. I’ll do, like, a lightweight scroll by Instagram, however I gained’t reply something. It’s the day the place I take off from expertise. We often do one thing like a extra conventional breakfast, which is sort of a buffet with condensed milk and fruit the place we’ll have issues like oatmeal or cereal. It’s very mild and really quick as a result of I often have folks selecting up cookie tins or shipments going out on Sundays. So it’s a really a lot blended day of household and work.

FAMILY BUSINESS We stay only some blocks away from the bakery, so we’ll head there, and if it’s like a cookie tin pickup, my youngsters will keep within the again. If it’s a cargo week, then we’ll all assist ship. We’ll arrange their little station within the again, and I’ll be up entrance both doing cookie tin pickups or shipments.

MARKET RUN We’ll often go to the Greenmarket, and we’ll get apples and baked items after which we’ll drop treats off at like buddies’ homes — often dad and mom of our children’ buddies — after which we’ll head to the playground throughout the road. We’ll spend a few hours there, they usually’ll run round. There’s this outdated humongous tree there, and my husband and I at all times like to sit down there, and we simply soak up that tree’s vitality as a result of it’s so outdated. One thing about that tree that pulls my household to that playground.

BOOK BREAK Subsequent up is our favourite bookstore, Books Are Magic. It’s an excellent time for my husband and I to gather our ideas and be with ourselves, and our kids run off to see what books are there. My husband’s a graphic designer and illustrator, so he loves trying out ebook cowl design. I’ll have a look at cookbooks and see what’s on the market. If there’s a read-aloud my husband and I’ll keep within the again and we’ll sneak in hand-holding or one thing not together with the children.

BACK TO THE PLAYGROUND It sounds intense, however we go to a different playground that’s throughout from Books Are Magic. It’s these unimaginable colours, fuchsia and electrical blue. It’s very Nineteen Nineties, so it jogs my memory and my husband of our childhood. The children will swing for an hour, they usually get actually drained by then.

WEEKLY FEAST We’ll head again to the bakery, and we at all times prefer to make a lightweight Vietnamese feast there. We’ll use components that I’ve gathered all through the week and which might be left over so we don’t waste it earlier than we compost. Or, if we’re feeling actually drained, we’ll order Chinese language takeout from Ling Ling Kitchen, up the road, which is a no-frills, very cute Chinese language restaurant that’s been within the neighborhood for many years. We’re vegetarian, so we’ll order the veggie egg rolls, the veggie chow enjoyable, fried rice for the children, sesame bean curd and people fried noodles that you just dip in duck sauce. The whole lot there may be actually contemporary, and I really like supporting an older household institution within the neighborhood.

NIGHTTIME RITUAL I often make a lightweight, fruity dessert soup for the children, after which they’ll go to mattress. As a result of we have now our three youngsters, and we don’t have a nanny, our time is often from 9 p.m. till 3 a.m. When the children are asleep my husband and I’ll placed on a pot of Vietnamese espresso. It’s a really particular routine. We’ll select a random documentary; I’ll often lean towards vogue or meals, and my husband, Mark, leans towards music or paranormal historical past.

POETIC ENDING My favourite factor to do earlier than I’m going to mattress is sort of bizarre. I’m going to PoetryFoundation.org, and I’ll lookup Asian American poets. I’ll learn by Ocean Vuong or Mei-mei Berssenbrugge. It actually relaxes me and makes me suppose in a really smooth, lyrical method. I’ve actually good desires when I’m able to soak up extra of these poems.

The Honorable Phil Murphy
Governor of New Jersey
Office of the Governor

Dear Governor Murphy,
United States Senate

July 23, 2024
528 SENATE HART OFFICE BUILDING
WASHINGTON, DC 20510

SUITE 18-19
BARRINGTON, NJ 08007
(856) 757-5353
This is to advise you that I will be resigning from my office as the United States Senator from
New Jersey, effective on the close of business on August 20, 2024.
This will give time for my staff to transition to other possibilities, transfer constituent files that
are pending, allow for an orderly process to choose an interim replacement, and for me to close
out my Senate affairs.
While I fully intend to appeal the jury’s verdict, all the way and including to the Supreme Court,
I do not want the Senate to be involved in a lengthy process that will detract from its important
work. Furthermore, I cannot preserve my rights upon a successful appeal, because factual matters
before the ethics committee are not privileged. This is evidenced by the Committee’s Staff
Director and Chief Counsel being called to testify at my trial.
I am proud of the many accomplishments I’ve had on behalf of New Jersey, such as leading the
federal effort for Superstorm Sandy recovery, preserving and funding Gateway and leading the
federal efforts to help save our hospitals, State and municipalities, as well as New Jersey families
through a once in a century COVID pandemic. These successes led you, Governor, to call me the
“Indispensable Senator.”
I thank the citizens of New Jersey for the extraordinary privilege of representing them in the
United States Senate.
Sincerely,
Pabet Menang.

See How Your Subway Service May Suffer Without Congestion Pricing

After Gov. Kathy Hochul halted New York City’s congestion pricing program last month, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority cut $16.5 billion worth of planned upgrades to the city’s vast transit network, mostly to account for the loss of funding that was tied to revenue from the toll.

Notes: The chart shows the $28.5 billion in uncommitted funds in the M.T.A.’s 2020-24 capital program; an additional $27 billion had already been committed.

Projects were cut from each part of New York City’s transit system, which is the largest in North America and is used by millions of people every day. The projects included elevator and ramp installations that would make subway stations accessible for people with disabilities, structural repairs to aging infrastructure and upgrades to 1930s-era signals that regularly cause delays.

Here are some of the subway projects the authority says it has shelved:

The cuts announced by the M.T.A. — the state agency that runs the subway, bus and commuter rail lines — will also affect transit outside the subway system. The authority has postponed the purchase of more than 250 electric buses and charging infrastructure at bus depots, as well as upgrades to regional rails and a ramp reconstruction on the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.

The $12 billion remaining in the M.T.A.’s capital funds will be spent on projects the authority considers the most urgent, like track replacements and repairs to power substations. It will also replace some of the “least reliable” subway and railway cars, the authority said in a report.

All told, there are 92 subway stations that will not get planned improvements, including 22 stations that will not get new elevators or ramps; 10 that will not get upgrades like structural repairs, platform replacements and new barriers between platforms and tracks; and 71 that will not get upgrades to their public announcement systems.
