Saturday’s Maine college roundup: UMaine baseball earns eighth straight win

ORONO — Joe Bramanti hit a three-run homer and Jeremiah Jenkins added a two-run shot within the third inning because the College of Maine scored six runs to earn its eighth straight win, beating UMass Lowell 8-5 on Saturday.

Bramanti went 2 for five with a house run and a double for the Black Bears, who improved to 18-14 total and 14-3 within the America East Convention. Caleb Leys didn’t permit a success in six innings to earn the win. He struck out six and walked seven.

Ryan Proto had a two-run single for the River Hawks (15-22, 7-10).

BOWDOIN SWEEPS COLBY: Ben McKenzie hit a two-run triple because the Polar Bears (13-14, 6-2) scored fifth runs within the sixth inning on their approach to a 10-3 win within the first recreation of a doubleheader sweep of the Mules (16-9, 4-4) in Waterville.

CJ Brito-Trinidad went 3 for 4 with two RBI and a run scored within the first recreation for Bowdoin. Robbie Sarmanian added two hits, together with a two-run single within the fifth.

Jack Mullen pitched seven innings, permitting one run on three hits, whereas putting out six and strolling two as Bowdoin received the second recreation, 7-1.

Aidan Blake hit a two-run triple and an RBI single within the first recreation as UMass Boston received 13-3.

SOUTHERN MAINE CC SWEEPS GREAT BAY CC: The Seawolves (19-11, 4-1 YSCC) scored 44 runs and didn’t permit any in a doubleheader sweep of the Herons (0-6, 0-6) in in South Portland.

Sam Klebinsky and Anthony Sayers had 4 RBI every as SMCC received the primary recreation, 23-0. Mitchell Quigg had 4 RBI within the second recreation, which the Seawolves received, 21-0.

WESLEYAN SWEEPS BATES: Wes Fritch was 3 for 3 with two RBI and three runs scored because the Cardinals (17-11, 8-3 NESCAC) received the primary recreation of a doubleheader sweep of the Bobcats (6-21, 1-8), 8-4, in Middletown, Connecticut.

Bates misplaced the second recreation, 7-5.

BINGHAMTON, MAINE SPLIT: Caitlyn Fallon pitched a shutout because the Black Bears (7-30, 3-7 America East) received the second recreation of a doubleheader with the Bearcats (15-19, 2-6), 3-0, to earn a cut up of a doubleheader in Orono.

Fallon struck out 5, walked 4 and allowed 4 hits to enhance to 3-2. Maine scored thrice within the first, together with an RBI double by Kelby Drews.

Binghamton scored two runs within the sixth inning to earn a 3-1 win within the opener.

BOWDOIN, COLBY SPLIT: Kasey Cunningham scored on a fielder’s alternative within the backside of the seventh inning to provide the Polar Bears (13-15, 3-9 NESCAC) an 8-7 win within the second recreation of a doubleheader with the Mules (18-12, 6-3) in Brunswick.

Sami Groves had a two-run double within the fourth for UNE. Jordan Strum allowed one run on 4 hits, whereas putting out three in seven to earn the win.

Caitlyn Wooden allowed three hits to earn a shutout as Curry received the primary recreation, 2-0.

SOUTHERN MAINE SWEEPS KEENE STATE: Lauren Merrill pitched seven shutout innings because the Huskies (16-13, 7-3 LEC) received the primary recreation of a doubleheader with the Owls (12-22, 2-12) 8-0 in Keene, New Hampshire.

Belle Synder allowed one run on three hits in seven innings within the second recreation as Southern Maine received 6-1.

Lauren Miller was 3 for 4 and scored twice within the first recreation. Lauren Leidemann-Smith had two hits and drove in three runs.

ST. JOSEPH’S SWEEPS ANNA MARIA: The Monks (13-14, 8-3 GNAC) shut out the Amcats (13-20, 6-9) twice, successful 3-0 and 13-0 in a doubleheader in Paxton, Mass.

Meredith Pence pitched a whole recreation within the opener, putting out seven, strolling one and giving up two hits.

Lydia Goodnough was a double shy of the cycle and drove in 4 runs within the second recreation.

BOWDOIN 19, CONN. COLLEGE 5: Fiona Bundy had two objectives and 5 assists because the Polar Bears (9-5, 4-5 NESCAC) beat the Camels (6-8, 1-8) in Brunswick.

Colleen McAloon added three objectives and three assists, whereas Sophia Schaefer had three objectives for Bowdoin. Maddie White and Emelia Krakora every had two objectives.

Aine Downey had two objectives for Connecticut Faculty.

ROGER WILLIAMS 18, U. OF NEW ENGLAND 10: Tim Mullane and Jared Grier scored 5 objectives apiece because the Hawks (8-9, 5-2 CCC) used a 6-1 third quarter to tug away from the Nor’easters (5-11, 1-6) at Biddeford.

CASTLETON 12, SOUTHERN MAINE 10: Ethan Esposito scored a hat trick and Chris Wilk made 16 saves, 9 within the fourth quarter, because the Spartans (21-12, 2-4 LEC) jumped out to a 6-1 halftime lead and held off the Huskies (3-8, 1-1) at Gorham.

Schuyler Wetmore had 4 objectives and two assists for USM. Tucker Nussinow added three objectives and an help. Nathan Plourde made 13 saves.

Maine Water, Coastal Mountains Land Trust protect more watershed land

Maine Water and the Coastal Mountains Land Trust celebrated a decade of working together Sept. 18 by announcing an agreement to add another 29 acres on Spruce Mountain to the more than 1,500 acres of open space on Maine’s Midcoast that the two organizations have already protected.

Maine Water also presented the land trust with a $10,000 donation to fund the group’s continued conservation work.

“One of our top priorities, by necessity, is the high quality of the drinking water that we deliver to Maine families,” said Mark Vannoy, President of Maine Water, in a Sept. 25 news release. “Through our partnership with the CMLT we secured this water supply in perpetuity, for those who follow us. We’ve found the land trust to be an ideal partner, not only for the purpose of protecting the area’s drinking water, but also for making the land available for light recreation so that families can get out and enjoy our incredible natural resources.”

At a ceremony held Sept. 18 at the Ragged Mountain Thorndike Brook Trailhead, Coastal Mountains Land Trust Executive Director Ian Stewart noted Maine Water’s decision about a decade ago to partner on conservation initiatives, rather than sell land the company had been acquiring since the late 1800s.

“There was an ethic on both sides of the conversation to say this is an opportunity to do something different than just sell this land off,” Steward said. “We live in an extraordinarily beautiful place, and there’s an opportunity still here to see that some of the most special places in our community are set aside.”

During the ceremony, Vannoy reminisced about how he reluctantly entertained his son’s suggestion a couple of years ago that the two of them take a January hike to the top of Ragged Mountain to watch the sunrise. Temperatures were in the single digits.

“It was well worth the effort,” Vannoy said. “It is just great to see the beauty of this place, and we’ve preserved that for generations to come.”

The partnership between Maine Water and the Coastal Mountains Land Trust permanently protected Mirror Lake and Grassy Pond, important sources of drinking water for six coastal communities. Maine Water employees also regularly donate time and effort to maintain trails on the properties. On Friday, more than 20 volunteers associated with the company spent the morning working with land trust staff maintaining trails around Ragged Mountain.

Central Maine Power sends 20 crews from Maine to aid in Hurricane Helene recovery

PORTLAND (WGME) – Central Maine Power is one of many power companies sending assistance south for Hurricane Helene recovery efforts.

20 crews, a total of 50 people, gathered at the Kennebunk Service Plaza this morning before heading south to Virginia.

CMP spokesman Jon Breed says the request for help came in Friday night.

“Last night, we went to bed thinking they were going to Kentucky and West Virginia, and this morning it was Virginia, it just kind of shows the dynamic situation that is unfolding down there as millions are without power, but they are kind of feeding into a large resource group that is working to get the lights back on,” said Breed.

CMP’s parent company, Avangrid, sent 53 other crews from New York and Connecticut, as well.

Maine murder suspect led officers on high-speed chase in Mass., DA says

A Bangor man was held without bail Friday after the Berkshire District Attorney’s Office said he was involved in a high-speed chase following the murder of a 39-year-old woman in Maine.

The Bangor Maine Police Department found Virginia Cookson, 39, of Bangor, dead in her residence on Sept. 25, according to a statement from the district attorney.

Two days later, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta, Maine ruled the death to be a homicide, which led to a warrant issued for Richard Keith Thorpe, 42 of Bangor.
