Another big March snow; what made this system so unique?
This most up-to-date snow throughout Wisconsin not solely will go down as a backbreaker, but additionally as a novel over-performer that when once more proves March snowfalls are not any simple activity to forecast.
Presumably essentially the most basic and overused joke within the e-book is meteorologists receives a commission to be unsuitable. And with this technique, it might show true! The very best totals had been principally forecast for areas farthest southeast however as an alternative, the best totals stretch from Madison all the best way as much as Inexperienced Bay. However why?
Later atmospheric mannequin runs Friday, March 24 did present this V-shape highest totals, however so late within the recreation and with such variance, it was onerous to take as certainty.
The very best totals from Saturday’s, March 25 system stretched from Madison to Inexperienced Bay, however one other pocket from Walworth to Milwaukee County
At FOX6, we saved with the unique vary to remain constant. However even with later mannequin run updates, they nonetheless beneath forecasted simply how intense this stalled heavy snow band could be over areas resembling Madison, Fond du Lac and as much as Inexperienced Bay.
In our neck of the woods, we did see 6-10 inches – however there have been noticeable gaps in Kenosha, Racine and even as much as Sheboygan.
Particular person snow totals in SE Wisconsin for Saturday, Mar. 25
Late winter and early spring snow may be tough due to, on common, how heat we’re. Hotter air can maintain extra moisture and with enough chilly air within the higher ambiance, convective snow bands can drop a number of snow in a brief time frame. The place these bands arrange may be extremely variable – and simply bust forecasts.
From a historic standpoint, the 8.7 inches that fell at Mitchell Worldwide Airport means Milwaukee noticed its first 20-plus-inch snow March in nearly 60 years. The final time we acquired even near this was in 2009. And searching again during the last 100 years, it’s fairly unusual.
Snowiest Marches within the final 100 years now simply consists of 2023
Most of our snow this season got here proper on the finish and traditionally that is fairly frequent each 3-5 years
One side that comes as a shock is simply how a lot snow has fallen since Jan. 21. We went from 7.8 inches from Oct. 1 by Jan. 21 – to 50.5 inches complete because of an energetic finish to winter. We went from traditionally under common to now above common for the season by way of snowfall.
The larger shock is that this occurs really very often. Each three-to-five years, it is fairly regular to get most of our snowfall after Jan. 21. This 12 months was no exception.

Wisconsin football alums disgusted with ‘sad state of affairs’ of Badgers program after loss to Minnesota
Wisconsin’s Luke Fickell struggling to understand team’s inconsistency
The Badgers football coach met with reporters following a 44-25 loss to Nebraska at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Wisconsin football’s season is sunk.
And it’s a program that’s facing uncharted waters after Friday’s dreadful showing in its 24-7 loss to Minnesota in the regular-season finale.
No bowl game. A losing season. Questions about the coaching staff. Questions about the roster.
The season has actually been sinking for some time, but the Badgers still had a chance to salvage whatever was left of it with a win over Minnesota.
It was a rivalry game. It was at home. And it was for a chance to play in a bowl game, something that every Wisconsin team has played in for the last 22 years.
Instead, the Badgers lost for the fifth straight time behind an offense that is no longer recognizable to players from the past. Wisconsin also suffered its third consecutive defeat at Camp Randall Stadium and fourth this season.
Former Wisconsin football players have been following the season closely and speaking out in disgust on social media as the losses have piled up. Like the fans at Camp Randall Stadium on Friday, they again let their feelings be known about the direction of the program as Wisconsin finished the 2024 season 5-7.
Here’s a sample of the reactions from the likes of Brian Calhoun, Braelon Allen, Sojourn Shelton and others:

“Factory enhanced” snow causes crashes and spinouts in Wisconsin
Menomonie, Wis. — A murky day for turkey day. In this part of western Wisconsin, “murky” is an understatement.
A narrow band of snow quickly dropped three inches on drivers — even sending a semi sliding into a ditch.
The National Weather Service says it’s likely because of a glass manufacturing company near Menomonie.
“That steam rises into the deck of clouds that are above it, and the steam acts as little particles that the water droplets can latch onto and create snow crystals” said Meteorologist Caleb Grunzke of the National Weather Service. “Everything came together perfectly for several inches of snow and major traffic problems.”
The Wisconsin State Patrol reported 16 crashes in a 5 hour span, including a six-car pile-up.
“We kind of drove in and out of the snow very dramatically” said Dave Erickson, who was making the trip back to the Twin Cities from Milwaukee.
“Drive safe, happy Thanksgiving” Erickson added.
