NORTH DAKOTA — The lack of snow this winter is making surviving the season easier on wildlife.

Since habitats haven’t been filled with snow, staff with the North Dakota Game and Fish Department said animals have been able to stay warm and reproduce successfully.

The moisture from the rainfall in the fall, then the freezing temperatures in the winter, helped the animals store their foods to use through the winter.

Even though there is not a lot of snow, they recommend people avoid areas where animals will gather.

“If you go out to where there is a group of deer and they run mile, they either have to come back to that spot because that’s where there thermal cover was,”said Casey Anderson, ND Game & Fish Wildlife division Chief

“Every time those critters have to avoid you because you’re out there in a certain spot or things like that, they’re burning up energy,” he added.

Anderson said land owners can also help the wildlife by making more space for their habitats.
