Multi-state police pursuit of alleged kidnapper ends in fiery collision with 3 dead

Two teenagers are dead after a driver being pursued by police in Iowa for kidnapping an infant in Nebraska caused a crash in Missouri, police said.

The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office said it received a report from a woman at the Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg, Iowa, who experienced a domestic assault by a male acquaintance.

The woman told police that the man, who was “suicidal and homicidal,” kidnapped her and her child in Nebraska then drove into Iowa and dropped her off at the hospital before leaving with the baby.

Iowa State Patrol initiated a vehicle pursuit of the man, who was traveling at a high rate of speed and attempting to run into troopers, and followed him in the southbound lanes of Interstate 29 across the state line into Missouri.

The man, who was driving a Kia Sorento, collided with a 2013 Ford Focus traveling in the northbound left lane. After being hit, the Ford passed a 2024 Volvo semi-truck, which swerved to avoid the crash and struck a 2023 Chevy Tahoe Fremont County patrol vehicle, the statement said.

Two 18-year-olds who were in the Ford Focus were pronounced dead.

The crash caused the Kia with the 1-year-old baby inside to burst into flames.

A Fremont County deputy was able to rescue the infant from the burning vehicle and the baby was airlifted to a hospital in Omaha with non-life-threatening injuries. The man died in the crash.

Randy Pogue, mayor of Kearney, Missouri, took to social media to offer his condolences to the families of the two teens killed.

“In times of sorrow, I offer my deepest sympathies to the Cunningham and Yeates families. The loss of two Kearney Bulldogs in the traffic accident yesterday up North has shaken our community. May courage and hope be the steadfast companions of both families, friends, and all who mourn. Praying for you all,” Pogue wrote.

The deputy who was struck by the semi was treated for minor injuries and released from care.

The Missouri State Patrol is investigating the collision.

The Wisconsin vs Nebraska doubleheader ends with volleyball taking center stage Saturday night.

After the Badgers-Cornhuskers football teams do battle in the afternoon at Memorial Stadium, the highly ranked volleyball teams square off down the road on campus in Lincoln, Nebraska.

And it doesn’t get any bigger in women’s volleyball than Wisconsin and Nebraska. The Big Ten rivals and national powers will meet for a second time this season with a lot at stake.

Wisconsin (21-5, 15-2 Big Ten), ranked sixth in the most recent American Volleyball Coaches Association top 25 poll, will look to exact some revenge after Nebraska swept the Badgers earlier this month in Madison. It was Wisconsin’s first and only home loss of the season. A win will also keep the Badgers’ Big Ten title hopes alive.

Nebraska (27-1, 17-0) is on a march toward perfection in the Big Ten and another conference championship. The Cornhuskers, ranked No. 2 nationally, haven’t lost at home this season and are poised for a top seed again in the upcoming NCAA Tournament.

As winners of its last six matches, Wisconsin has found its groove. The Badgers showed their fight in rallying for a wild five-set win over Minnesota earlier this week and before that gave Penn State its first Big Ten loss of the season last Saturday.

Can UW now give Nebraska its first conference loss? The Cornhuskers might just be too good in 2024 and will avoid the upset. Nebraska has won 24 straight matches since its lone defeat on Sept. 3, and with another victory it’ll get closer to a second straight Big Ten championship. Few Big Ten teams have even come close to beating Nebraska this season. The Cornhuskers have 13 sweeps in their 17 conference victories.

One of those 3-0 match wins came against Wisconsin three weeks ago. Kelly Sheffield’s team won’t be swept again, but the Cornhuskers will outlast the Badgers in a hard-fought five-set match before a sold-out crowd at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

ORLANDO, Fla. – After a three-game west coast trip, the Orlando Magic have returned home. They’re set to square off with the Detroit Pistons Saturday night for a one-off home game before again hitting the road. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. ET inside the Kia Center.

The Magic went 2-1 out west, with wins over Phoenix and the LA Lakers sandwiching a loss to the Clippers Wednesday night. Franz Wagner’s game-winner sealed a signature 119-118 win over the Lakers last time out, bringing a Hollywood ending to his 37-point, 11-assist night.

Detroit is no stranger to a thriller either. Their last time out, the Charlotte Hornets took them to overtime and, with the help of Brandon Miller’s 38 and LaMelo Ball’s 35, defeated the Pistons 123-121.
