Acid spill shuts down Uptown street during Hazmat response

MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) – A hydrochloric acid spill in Uptown prompted a Hazmat response by the Minneapolis Fire Department on Tuesday.
Firefighters say they were called out just after 4 p.m. for a 15-gallon drum that had tipped over in a chemical delivery truck parked on Dupont Avenue South north of West 29th Street.
Crews found that the spill had been mostly contained to the truck bed, with “minimal spill leakage onto the ground.” Firefighters say there was no runoff into the sewer system from what did end up on the ground. There were no issues resulting from gas vapors either.
Firefighters used sand to soak up the acid and soda ash to neutralize it.
Bay West responded to clean up and remove the spilled acid.
The truck’s driver didn’t require medical treatment due to the spill.
MINNEAPOLIS — A 37-year-old Bemidji woman is facing charges for her young daughter’s overdose death, according to a criminal complaint filed Wednesday in Hennepin County.
The woman was charged with one count of second-degree manslaughter for the May 28 death of her 2-year-old daughter at an emergency homeless shelter near downtown Minneapolis.
Officers were dispatched the the shelter on the 100 block of Glenwood Avenue North around 7:30 p.m. on a report of a baby not breathing.
Upon arrival, first responders administered Narcan for the child and attempted CPR. She was transported to Hennepin Healthcare, where she died a short time later.
An autopsy found the child had 9.7 nanograms per milliliter of fentanyl in her system as well as norfentanyl, Narcan and caffeine. Her cause of death was determined to be acute fentanyl toxicity.
The child’s mother told investigators she had been sleeping on the ground after the child’s father left the apartment when she woke up hours later with her child on her chest unresponsive.
When asked if the girl could have consumed narcotics, the mother allegedly responded by handing police a “plate with white power on it” and said it could possibly be fentanyl, charges say. The substance field tested positive for fentanyl. She told officers she did not know when the fentanyl was placed on the plate and denied doing it herself.
Court documents say the woman told officers she had done fentanyl while at the apartment around 2 a.m. the same day her daughter died.
During a search of the apartment, officers reportedly found multiple pills and needles.
Family looks for answers in Mpls woman’s death
A family is mourning and looking for answers after 57-year-old Felisha Smith was found death outside a church in Minneapolis back in July. FOX 9’s Mike Manzoni has the story.
MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) – Nearly seven weeks after a woman was found dead on the side of a Minneapolis church her family is still searching for answers.
What happened?
Felisha Smith, 57, of Minneapolis, disappeared after she signed herself out of The Estates at Chateau, a long-term care facility where she lived, her family said.
She made her way to Chicago Lake Liquors on East Lake Street, they said. The next day, July 14, a pastor at Spirit of the Lord Church found her body on the side of the building, they said.
“[She was] covered with a blanket from the neck down, pants removed,” said her daughter Shari Smith.
Shari Smith said the medical examiner’s office said her mother was sexually assaulted before she was killed. She said when she identified her body she noticed trauma on her mother’s face.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office hasn’t released a cause or manner of death.
What the family is saying
“She was a loving, kind, compassionate mother of nine children and just a wonderful, beautiful soul,”Shari Smith said.
She said her mother survived a shooting in 2014 that left her with a traumatic brain injury, and she fears someone may have taken advantage of her.
“My concerns are for community awareness, that the public be made aware that there’s someone on the loose who is doing horrific things,” Shari Smith continued.
What police are saying
Minneapolis police called the death suspicious, but didn’t elaborate.
They haven’t made any arrests.
Police respond to a shooting at the intersection of Lake Street and Park Avenue (FOX 9).
MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) – Minneapolis police are investigating a fatal Lake Street shooting that left one man dead and two others injured Friday night.
What we know
Minneapolis police say officers responded to reports of gunfire at the intersection of Lake Street and Park Avenue around 11:30 p.m. Friday.
They then found a man suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Police say two other men then arrived at separate hospitals with gunshot wounds that were not life-threatening. Investigators believe they were both shot at the Lake Street and Park Avenue incident.
Investigators also believe the shooting stemmed from an argument that happened when a group gathered in the area.
Law enforcement officials are asking anyone with information on the shooting to call CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
What we don’t know
Police have not released any information on possible suspects.
The identity of the man killed is expected to be released by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office at a later date.
