USS Beloit; Naval warship commissioning in Milwaukee this weekend
Naval warship commissioning in Milwaukee this weekend
The newest naval warship, now docked in Milwaukee, will be commissioned on Saturday, Nov. 23.
MILWAUKEE – A new U.S. Navy warship from a once-troubled fleet is set to be commissioned this week in Milwaukee.
The USS Beloit is the newest warship of the U.S. Navy, and it’s sitting in Milwaukee, at 378-feet long in Veterans Park.
“It’s great, it’s beautiful, it’s history,” said Linda Gilbert of Beloit.

Retired U.S. Navy Reserve Vice Admiral Dirk Debbink is leading the committee for the USS Beloit. The littoral combat warship made in Wisconsin is one of the most advanced ships in the world with an expensive past.
“This is the last time we will likely ever see this ship in the Great Lakes after she’s commissioned,” Debbink said.
He believes it’ll have a different fate than the $750 million USS Milwaukee. The ship was decommissioned in 2023 after only eight years. It was the ninth littoral warship to be pulled from active service.
“I think this ship is a fully capable ship and I don’t think it will have the problems the Milwaukee had,” Debbink said. “A lot of those were engineering plant issues, and they definitely resolved those.”
Debbink said there have been significant upgrades to weapons and combat systems.
“Marinette Marine and the Navy learned from these earlier ships and included a lot of ship alterations and improvements in these later ships,” Debbink said.
While littoral combat ships have a history of failure, people touring on Tuesday said they have hope that this ship will have a more lasting impact.

“With what their mission is and what they described to us, I believe it serves a vital purpose, so, I hope that we would get our money’s worth out of it,” said Navy veteran David Morrow.
“I would think that the ship will serve its time,” said Navy veteran Greg Stamatelakys. “And if it is going to mothballs it will be ready and able to go back out.”
The USS Beloit will be commissioned on Saturday, Nov. 23.
Thousands are expected to attend the ceremony as the ship leaves Veterans Park, heading to its home port at Naval Station Mayport in Jacksonville, Fla.

LSU holds off Milwaukee to stay unbeaten

LSU looked to have broken open a close game with three runs in the eighth inning against Milwaukee Saturday.
But the Tigers still had to squirming to do before holding on for a 5-3 victory over the Panthers in the second game of the season opening series for the defending national champions.
Steven Milam doubled home Jake Brown and Derek Curiel and Cade Arrambide added an RBI double for a 5-1 LSU lead in the eigth inning.
“Steven was just being Steven,” LSU coach Jay Johnson said. “Mr. Clutch. Time and time again, we never have a doubt he’s going to do what he needs to do in these moments. And he delivered big time.”
But Milwaukee eventually outhit the Tigers 9-8 and made it interesting in the ninth with a pair of runs on four hits in the final inning and had the tying run on before Grant Fontenot got the final out.
The story, however, was starting pitcher Cooper Moore (1-0), a transfer from Kansas who had a career-high 11 strike outs in his LSU debut.
He and five other LSU pitchers combined for 17 strike outs for the second time in as many games.
“He has a lot of ways to get you out,” Walker said of Moore, who allowed four hits in six innings, including a solo home run in the fourth for the only run he allowed.
“He was our best-performing pitcher in the fall, so it was not a surprise to us that he had this type of outing today. Cooper has great self-belief, and I think those guys are special. He pitches like he needs to win, and we certainly needed that today.”
LSU’s other two runs came in the third inning on a sacrifice flu by Curiel, followed by an RBI single by Brown.
The two teams will finish the weekend series Sunday at 1 p.m., with sophomore William Schmidt pitching for LSU.

Ashley Erving, Ebony Erving and Nygean Powell are each charged with obstructing an officer and disorderly conduct.
25th and Capitol
The backstory:
According to a criminal complaint, Erving shot Sims with a rifle multiple times on the night of Feb. 4. He then took off with the help of his three sisters, who were also present at the shooting scene near 25th and Capitol.

Investigators said Sims was with a woman before the shooting who had previously been in a relationship with Erving. She eventually told detectives that Erving “intended to physically harm her.”
Court filings said a woman was trying to end a relationship, but things turned violent.
Trevion Sims
What they’re saying:
Loved ones said Sims died trying to protect a life, and “did not deserve this.” They still can’t wrap their heads around what happened.
“Grieving is one thing, but also having to be there for somebody who will never see their father again is another,” said Destiny Turner, Sims’ sister. “How am I going to be able to continue to pick up the pieces?”
The family started a GoFundMe online fundraiser to help raise money for Sims’ daughter.
“Want people to remember him as a protector, because the only way this happened was because he was protecting a friend,” said Turner.
The Source: FOX6 News spoke to Sims’ family and reviewed information from the Milwaukee Police Department, Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office and Wisconsin Circuit Court.
