Chicago Cubs @ Milwaukee Brewers – Series Preview (May 27-30): Overview, Game and Broadcast Info, Starting Pitchers, W2W4 – Cubs Insider

The Cubs (27-26) are playing their worst baseball of the season with four consecutive losses, including both games against the Cardinals in a rain-shortened weekend series. The offense has been a major culprit in a 9-14 May malaise that has seen Chicago drop to within a single game of the .500 mark and a tie with St. Louis in the standings. Now they face the daunting task of four against the first-place Brewers on the road starting Monday.

Milwaukee (30-22) just completed a three-city road trip with a 4-5 record but actually gained in the standings on the Cubs. Christian Yelich and William Contreras continue to be the driving forces in a lineup that has been pretty potent so far in 2024. Young third baseman Joey Ortiz is also having a very strong season.

The pitching is solid but certainly not unhittable so far with a 3.88 team ERA. Freddy Peralta has been good as the ace after the departure of Corbin Burnes. Former Cub Trevor Megill is putting up very impressive numbers as the closer, filling in for the injured Devin Williams.

The Brewers lost two of three at Wrigley Field earlier this month but Chicago has gone 6-10 since and really needs to turn things around. To add some extra drama, this is the first game back at American Family Field for Craig Counsell after he jumped ship for the hated Cubs in the offseason.

The North Siders are really going to have to step things up these next four contests or this skid could turn into a big slide in a hurry. This is an early test, let’s see if they can survive it.

The Chicago Cubs and the Milwaukee Brewers meet Monday in MLB action from American Family Field. We will look at this from a betting perspective and determine the best bets for this game. Here’s a Milwaukee Brewers vs Chicago Cubs Prediction.

Starting Pitching Matchup

The Chicago Cubs will send out Justin Steele here and Steele is 0-2 with a 5.68 ERA and 23 strikeouts this season. In his last five starts against the Brewers, Steele is 1-0 with a 1.23 ERA and 36 strikeouts. Robert Gasser will get the start for the Brewers here and is 2-0 with a 2.65 ERA and 6 strikeouts this season. This will be Gasser’s first career start against the Cubs.

Chicago Cubs Recap

The Chicago Cubs come into this one looking to rebound from a tough rain-shortened series against the St. Louis Cardinals over the weekend. The Cubs could use a positive result after series losses to the Braves and Pirates over the last week and a half.

Cubs Could Use Consistent Offense

Going into Sunday’s matchup, Nico Hoerner leads the Cubs with 45 hits, 12 doubles and a .263 batting average while Christopher Morel has a team-high 9 home runs and 33 RBIs. Michael Busch has 7 homers with 21 RBIs but also has the unfortunate distinction of leading the Cubs with 63 strikeouts as well this season. Cody Bellinger also has 7 homers and 23 RBIs as well this season.

Milwaukee Brewers Recap

The Milwaukee Brewers come into this one looking to build on another series win after knocking off Boston over the weekend despite a 2-1 loss in Sunday’s series finale. The Brewers needed the series win after falling to the Marlins and Astros over the last week and a half.

Brewers Looking To Drum Up Offense Back At Home

William Contreras leads the Brewers with 69 hits including 15 doubles and 43 RBIs along with 8 home runs and a .405 OBP while Rhys Hoskins has a team-high 9 home runs with 27 RBIs and Willy Adames has a team-high 16 doubles with 7 home runs and 32 RBIs. Brice Turang leads the Brewers with 19 stolen bases while Adames has a team-high 50 strikeouts as well this season.

Milwaukee Brewers vs Chicago Cubs Prediction

I’m on the Brewers in this one. Justin Steele was a profitable pitcher for the Cubs last season, but he simply has not had it this season. The Brewers have been a strong road team, but even going back home, they’ve had a fair bit of success, especially when it comes to playing within the division. Robert Gasser had a tough time last time out, but he’s been solid in two home starts and this is just a tough schedule spot for the Cubs after Sunday night baseball. I’ll roll with the Brew Crew at home here.

Milwaukee Brewers: Quintin Berry At Center Of Benches Clearing Vs Boston Red Sox; 1 Theory As To Cause Prevails

The Milwaukee Brewers dropped the final game of their series against the Boston Red Sox by the low score of 2-1. Oliver Dunn, who was just called up today from Triple-A Nashville (outfielder Joey Wiemer was sent down in a corresponding move) scored the only run on a William Contreras RBI single. Tobias Myers. the Brewers’ starter, could not get through five innings, but allowed just a single run.

Indeed, hard hit balls were hard to come by on a sunny day in Boston, and the scoreboard certainly reflected that. However, whatever fireworks both offenses lacked was made up for by yet another benches clearing altercation between the Brewers and their opponent.

Milwaukee Brewers First Base Coach Quintin Berry Got into a Shouting Match with Boston Red Sox Pitcher Chris Martin

After the top of the seventh inning had ended, first base coach Quintin Berry had to be escorted to the Brewers’ dugout after he and Red Sox pitcher Chris Martin started yelling at each other. Both benches cleared, but punches were thrown.

For a while, many wondered what might have caused Berry to get so heated. After some rewatching of the altercation, some fans believe they might have identified the cause.

“If I read lips correctly, Chris Martin walked by Berry and said something to the effect of ‘F—ing bunts you f—ing b—-,” one fan posted. This was agreed upon by both Brewers analysts and fans.

Prior to the end of the inning, two Brewers players attempted to reach base via bunt. 37-year old Chris Martin, the pitcher, did not seem to appreciate the attempts.

The Milwaukee Brewers Have Been Involved in Four Benches Clearing Incidents

The interaction with the Red Sox with the fourth one of its kind that the Brewers have been involved in this season. The first, of course, happened on opening weekend when Rhys Hoskins slid hard into second base, upsetting Jeff McNeil. The two exchanged words and the benches cleared, though no physical blows took place.

Interestingly, the next three bench-clearing instances involving Milwaukee all involve American League East teams. The next one took place against the Baltimore Orioles when Willy Adames and James McCann exchanged words.

The only bench-clearing incident that led to actual blows came at American Family Field against the Tampa Bay Rays when relief pitcher Abner Uribe took a swing at outfielder Jose Siri.

This latest dust up with the Red Sox leaves just the New York Yankees in the division who have not had words with Milwaukee. Fortunately, they played their lone series of the year already this season.
