He was named the Massive Ten’s co-defensive participant of the week Monday after returning a fumble 30 yards for a landing within the second quarter and selecting off Simon and returning it 33 yards within the third quarter.

“I used to be fairly stunned,” Merriweather mentioned of his honor. “I actually didn’t assume I did something loopy. I performed off what the sport was giving me. (Sebastian) Castro made an enormous play. With out him that fumble restoration wouldn’t have occurred. That choose, I used to be simply sitting in a zone. It actually wasn’t something spectacular.”

That fumble restoration led to the primary landing of Merriweather’s faculty profession. It’s a play that the senior from Belleville, Mich., will all the time cherish.

However my coach instructed me to attend just a little bit. If he had given me the inexperienced mild to commit, I in all probability wouldn’t be taking part in soccer proper now. It’s simply loopy how God works. I used to be upset on the time. However God had a greater plan for me. Clearly that plan was higher than what I may have ever imagined.”

Iowa defensive coordinator Phil Parker noticed one thing in Merriweather at Belleville, and supplied him a scholarship late within the course of.

“He’s simply type of steadily gotten higher yearly, in each part,” Ferentz added. “That’s what a whole lot of our good gamers have carried out. He was a prospect, a great prospect who turned a great soccer participant and positively had an enormous evening the opposite evening. However he’s been certainly one of our leaders and revered by all people, not simply the defensive guys however all people on our soccer crew.”

That is another likelihood for Merriweather to beat the Wolverines. He’s 0-2 in opposition to Michigan, however celebrated a victory over Michigan State in 2020.

A kind of Maize and Blue losses was a humbling 42-3 determination in final season’s Massive Ten Championship sport.

“One factor Coach Parker all the time talks about is that there are six or seven performs that make the sport,” Merriweather mentioned. “You by no means know what these six or seven performs are. When these performs got here, our eyes weren’t in the proper spot. We weren’t the place we wanted to be, and so they hit us on a whole lot of large performs.”

None had been larger than a 67-yard first-quarter landing run by Blake Corum, adopted by a 75-yard scoring connection between working again Donovan Edwards and Roman Wilson on the primary play of the Wolverines’ subsequent possession.

Merriweather is in search of a greater state of affairs on Saturday.
