Iowa Democrats are hoping authorized edibles can flip their candidates into electables.

When Iowa Home Democrats not too long ago unveiled their election agenda, it included legalizing marijuana. Democratic gubernatorial nominee Deidre DeJear additionally helps authorized hashish. Senate Democrats floated a proposed constitutional modification legalizing marijuana, permitting Iowans to vote on the difficulty like voters in different states.

The pot push hasn’t obtained a lot consideration, in all probability as a result of Democrats have such a slim probability of taking up a legislative majority or defeating Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds. Nonetheless, it’s an fascinating growth on Iowa’s political timeline.

Legalization is more and more fashionable in Iowa, in response to polling. In 2021 a Des Moines Register Iowa Ballot on the subject discovered 54 % of Iowans favor authorized marijuana. That’s greater than double the variety of Iowans who supported it in 2013.

It’s typically known as “leisure” marijuana, but it surely has a severe facet. Enforcement of prison legal guidelines geared toward pot disproportionately have an effect on Black Iowans, despite the fact that the marijuana use fee between Black and white Iowans is roughly equal. Iowa’s racial disparity in marijuana arrests is among the many nation’s worst. And it’s a waste of regulation enforcement assets to implement marijuana legal guidelines.

I’m not pretending authorized marijuana could be problem-free. However this can be a state the place we will buy and carry a handgun with out a allow. We will purchase sufficient fireworks to show our neighborhood right into a struggle zone and blow off as many digits as we please. And we’re by no means various minutes away from locations to purchase high-octane booze in massive portions, if we wish.

The Iowa freedom reward pack already incorporates a handgun, a bottle of Templeton Rye and a gross of Whistling Moon Vacationers. Why not pot? Welcome to Highowa, I say.

However for some motive we proceed to erect a reefer insanity Maginot line towards rolling up a joint or popping a hashish gummy on this state. With Republicans in cost on the Statehouse, we will’t even speak about legalization. Decriminalization has just a few GOP allies however nonetheless goes nowhere. Iowa’s medical marijuana program is woefully insufficient and Reynolds has opposed significant modifications.

“I don’t help leisure marijuana. I don’t,” Reynolds mentioned in an interview with The Gazette again in 2019. “I gained’t be the governor to try this.”

Possibly it’s cultural, with stoned liberal school hippies dancing in Republicans’ heads. No upstanding Iowan must take pleasure in weed. A case of Busch Mild or a jug of Black Velvet, possibly, however by no means pot.

However like the true Maginot line, Iowans who need pot can merely go round it by driving to Illinois, the place authorized hashish merchandise can be found.

“What the hell, Kim?” Libertarian candidate for governor Rick Stewart says in his latest TV advert touting his help for authorized marijuana and opposition to the failed drug struggle. “Right here I’m in Illinois — why, only some miles from the Iowa border — they usually’ve obtained authorized hashish.”

DeJear would legalize and regulate the sale of marijuana merchandise to Iowans over the age of 21, much like alcohol legal guidelines. She would help small companies, particularly these owned by folks of coloration, to verify “authorized hashish turns into a viable enterprise alternative for extra than simply companies, “in response to her web site.

She would make investments an estimated $50 million in annual state tax collections from hashish gross sales in 4 areas: training, psychological well being care, paid parental go away and substance abuse prevention.

Home Democrats additionally would allow the regulated sale of marijuana to Iowans over 21.

“What we’re discovering is that if there are alternatives to maintain it protected, and to manage what Iowans are utilizing, if there are alternatives to leverage tax {dollars} to our priorities like training, we’re discovering that we will discover consensus on these points,” mentioned Home Minority Chief Jennifer Konfrst, D-Windsor Heights.

But when the Republican trifecta stays in place, it will likely be an actual bummer for pot followers.

“When folks violate the regulation, they get arrested. When folks violate the regulation, they pay penalties,” Rep. Steven Holt, chairman of the Home Judiciary Committee informed Iowa Beginning Line when requested about decriminalizing marijuana. “That is the regulation, and the regulation exists as a result of we’re attempting to lower what we imagine is the usage of one thing that might be dangerous.”

How about legalization? Holt mentioned “that’s one thing I’d by no means help.” He’s enjoyable at events.

And but, Republicans are operating on a “freedom” agenda this fall. However they simply have a special notion of what freedom means.

Underneath their definition, an individual has the liberty to demand that their native public college conform to their particular person worldview, from curriculum to books on library cabinets. If that doesn’t work, they need to have the liberty to take public training funding and use it to pay for personal college tuition.

They imagine within the freedom to sidestep public well being directives throughout a pandemic, however girls needs to be pressured to present beginning as a result of abortion is severely restricted. Rich carbon seize pipeline builders ought to have the liberty to take Iowans’ land for his or her tasks, paid for with billions in federal tax credit.

A proposed modification to the state structure would make gun possession a elementary proper whereas directing the courts to topic any regulation associated to firearms to “strict scrutiny.” That may curtail the power of Iowans and their elected leaders sooner or later from enacting new firearms legal guidelines.

You may wish to see your tax {dollars} spent to adequately fund increased training, public colleges, psychological well being and so forth. However Republicans want having the liberty to sock away our billions, brag about a big surplus and enact a brand new wave of tax cuts benefiting their donor class. And naturally there’s the liberty farmers and landowners must pollute waterways.

So it’s freedom for his or her ideological allies. The remainder of us can find it irresistible or go away it.

If Republicans proceed to run the state like this, the least they will do is allow us to have authorized marijuana to numb the ache. Edibles may assist us overlook the contemptibles.

No. 17 Iowa State tries to keep focus on Kansas State, not the many Big 12 title game scenarios

No. 17 Iowa State goes into its home game against Kansas State on Saturday night as one of the Big 12 teams with the highest probability of making it to the conference championship game next week.

That calculation comes from conference officials putting pencil to paper to figure out all the scenarios that could unfold on the final weekend of the regular season.

Cyclones coach Matt Campbell said his team just needs to worry about itself and not the myriad of possibilities that could determine the matchup for next week’s Big 12 title game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

“To me,” he said, “all that other stuff is wasted time, effort and energy.”

If the Cyclones (9-2, 6-2, No. 18 CFP) beat the Wildcats (8-3, 5-3, No. 24 CFP), they probably would be in. Arizona State would be the likely opponent if the Sun Devils win at Arizona.

So much would have to align for the Wildcats to advance — starting with beating Iowa State — that coach Chris Klieman said he didn’t plan to address the possibilities with his players. He said he wouldn’t have to anyway.

“The kids know,” he said.

Going for 10

The Cyclones are trying to become the first team in the program’s 133-year history to win 10 regular-season games. Wildcats’ tight end Will Swanson said he wasn’t aware of the 10-win milestone until a reporter told him. He indicated he and his teammates would like to keep the Cyclones from achieving it.

“I’ll probably have to mention that,” he said, laughing.

Up and running

K-State quarterback Avery Johnson appears to be back to his old self. The staff tried to reduce his rushing attempts after he was injured Oct. 12 at Colorado. There were no limitations on him in last week’s 41-15 win over Cincinnati. He ran 10 times for 70 yards, including a 33-yard burst and a 21-yard touchdown.

“People saw when he’s healthy, we’re really good on offense,” Klieman said.

Cold, but no snow

Temperatures are expected to be in the teens in Ames, but no snow is in the forecast. Heavy snow fell during last year’s game in Manhattan, Kansas. Abu Sama III ran for 276 yards and three touchdowns and the Cyclones’ defense made a fourth-down stop in the final minute to preserve a 42-35 victory.

“I just remember the snow and Abu running wild,” ISU receiver Jayden Higgins said. “There definitely was a lot of snow on the field.”

K-State’s Swanson said the game reminded him of a backyard football game but that it “panned out terribly.”

“Some spots there were 6 inches of snow,” he said. “I remember I caught a ball and I got tackled. I was face-first in the ground and had a pound of snow between my face and my facemask.”

Injury update

Klieman said RB Dylan Edwards could return against the Cyclones after sustaining a no-contact leg injury two weeks ago against Arizona State.

Campbell said S Drew Surges will be available and DT J.R. Singleton and TE Ben Brahmer are on track to play.
