Indiana teacher’s license revoked after video shows her forcing student to eat vomit

BROWNSBURG, Ind. — One of two Brownsburg Community School Corporation teachers accused of forcing a student to eat his own vomit has voluntarily surrendered her teaching license.

Although five adults were charged in connection with the incident, which took place in February of 2023, only two of those involved were licensed teachers at the school.

The Department of Education requested that Sara Seymour and Julie Taylor voluntarily surrender their licenses after the charges were filed against them.

Seymour surrendered her license on June 7, according to documents filed with the Department of Education, meaning it has officially been revoked.

Taylor did not respond to the IDOE’s request, so the department has filed a complaint with the Office of Administrative Law Proceedings to forcefully revoke her license.

In the complaint, the IDOE alleges that when they asked Taylor why she did not report the incident she said that she did not consider what happened to the child to be abuse.

All five employees were either fired or resigned after they were captured on video forcing a young student to eat his own vomit.

Seymour and Debra Kanipe, who was a Life Skills Instructional Aide, have both been charged with neglect of a dependent and failure to report.

Taylor, along with instructional aide Kristen Mitchell and Meghan King, who was a behavioral technician at K1ds Count Therapy, have all been charged with failure to report.

Brownsburg police were first contacted on April 12, regarding a report that a student had been mistreated during lunch.

The incident captured on surveillance video happened back in February, but the video was not reviewed until two months later when the incident was reported.

Surveillance video obtained from a search warrant shows a teacher and assistant forcing a Brown Elementary School student to eat his own vomit during lunch, according to the probable cause affidavits filed against the five adults involved.

The video, according to court documents, shows one of the instructors telling the 7-year-old student that if they vomit while choking they will have to eat their vomit. The child is given a tray and then vomits on the tray. The video then shows a second employee handing the child a spoon and telling them to eat their vomit. The child can then be seen eating some of the vomit off of the tray before being forced to clean it up.

The injury bug has bitten the Brooklyn Nets yet again just in time for a rematch with the Indiana Pacers. Brooklyn toppled the then-struggling Pacers back on Dec. 4, but much has changed for both squads since the 99-90 win at the Barclays Center.

ODDS:

The Nets enter the day as 9.5-point underdogs to the Pacers, and the total over/under is 222.5 points.

KEYS TO THE GAME:

1. Analyze the depth. As of 12 p.m. EST, the Nets are trending to be without Cam Johnson, Cam Thomas, Ben Simmons and D’Angelo Russell. The latter two are questionable but shouldn’t be expected to suit up. That foursome averages a combined 62.8 points per night, forcing the hosts to turn elsewhere for their scoring output.

2. Keep Haliburton inconsistent. After lifting Indiana to the conference finals in last year’s playoffs, Tyrese Haliburton has had the epitome of an up-and-down season. Some nights, he explodes for 30-plus points; others, he’s held to under 10. Whatever version of Haliburton shows up this evening will play a major impact on the game’s outcome.

3. Flow through Clax. If all four previously mentioned players remain out, Nic Claxton could become a focal point of Brooklyn’s offense. Recently, a large emphasis has been placed on getting the big man the ball in the pick-and-roll, creating an intriguing matchup between him and Myles Turner.

CenterPoint Energy provides update on winter storm impacts in Indiana

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) – Significant winter weather in CenterPoint Energy’s southwestern Indiana service area has caused widespread electric outages due to heavy ice and snow.

According to a press release, outages have increased steadily through Sunday evening, with approximately 5,000 customers without power at 5:30 p.m. to approximately 37,700 as of 9:30 p.m.

The increase in outages is largely due to ice accumulation and falling tree limbs impacting power lines.

Officials say crews have been working to assess damage and restore power as quickly and as safely as possible and have restored approximately 4,300 customers.

CenterPoint has deployed internal, contractor and mutual aid resources to assist with power restoration efforts.

Additional crews arrived Sunday morning and early afternoon and received onboarding and training to be deployed as soon as needed.

In restoring power, the company says they are prioritizing facilities vital to safety, health and welfare, such as hospitals, water treatment plants and public service facilities.

After addressing these critical needs, crews will focus on repairs that restore power to the largest number of customers first, continuing until all customers have power restored.

CenterPoint’s Vice President, Indiana Electric Shane Bradford released the following statement:

“Conditions across southwestern Indiana have been challenging due to ice accumulation and freezing rain. Our crews are working safely and making steady restoration progress, but the weather is creating recurring outages in some areas shortly after power is restored, as additional tree limbs and ice impact power lines. We appreciate the patience and understanding of our customers as we work to restore power as safely and quickly as possible. As hazardous conditions continue, crews are prioritizing safety as weather continues to impact our service area.”

CenterPoint’s natural gas system is operating as normal, and crews remain prepared to respond to any potential issues that may arise during the ongoing winter weather.

Man killed in northwest Indiana house fire

One person died in a house fire on Sunday morning in LaPorte County, Indiana, authorities said.

According to the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office, at around 7:06 a.m., deputies responded to a structure fire in the 200 block of South Longshore Drive near Fish Lake. Deputies approached the house, where “excessive smoke prevented them from safely entering to search for any occupants inside.”

Once the fire had been extinguished, first responders entered the residence and found one person who had died. The resident was identified as 64-year-old Ronald Conrad.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation on Sunday.
