Prominent Illinois Republicans throw support behind Kamala Harris
CHICAGO (CBS) — Some prominent Illinois Republicans are throwing their support behind Kamala Harris. On Sunday, the vice president’s campaign launched Republicans for Harris, aiming to mobilize and persuade Republican voters.
Familiar GOP endorsers include former Illinois Gov. Jim Edgar, former Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, and ex-representatives Adam Kinzinger and Joe Walsh.
Chris Tye spoke with Walsh, who shared why he thinks more establishment Republicans are willing to take this leap now.
“Many of these Republicans were not enthused about Joe Biden, and so I think Kamala Harris, who’s had a hell of a 17 days now, has really, I think, garnered a lot of enthusiasm among some Republicans that she can win,” he said. “Donald Trump is the odds-on favorite to get elected. For Kamala Harris to win, she got to put together this coalition of far-left progressives to never Trumper Republicans.”
Walsh believes that being part of the movement means they will likely never be elected to Republican office again, which is why so many of those taking the leap are former and retired elected office holders.

BELLWOOD, Ill. — The “King of Cash” scratched off a royal bounty in Chicago’s western suburbs.
Now the “King’s” family appears to be getting new cars, too.

The big winner, who goes by the nickname “King of Cash,” has requested to stay anonymous.
“I scratched off the ticket while I was still at the convenience store,” the “King of Cash” said in an Illinois Lottery press release. “I thought I read the ticket wrong. I had the cashier verify it for me, and he said, ‘Congratulations!’
“It was so shocking. My heart was pounding and I immediately started to sweat. I couldn’t believe it!”
And for the “King’s” subjects?
“First, I want to pay off our mortgage and my car,” the “King” proclaimed. “Next, my wife wants a new car and my son needs a new car.
“New cars for everybody!”

The “King” almost forgot his own chariot when he won the lottery.
“I was so surprised, and I needed to rush home,” the “King” shared. “I was in such a hurry, I ran out of the store and almost headed home, forgetting my truck in the parking lot!”
For selling the winning ticket to its royal customer, Bellwood Liquor and Grocery receives a selling bonus of 1% of the prize amount, or $30,000 in this case.

CAROL STREAM, Ill. (WLS) — Sun’s out, tongues out!

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch
Sunday marked the 7th Annual VetBros Charity Dog Show.
Dr. Mondrian Contreras is in charge of VetBros, a nonprofit organization working to help owners cover life-saving pet medical expenses while also educating the community on pet health.
“Carol Stream has an unbelievable pet-loving community,” Contreras said. “The mission of the event is to really have fun, help people see the uniqueness of our pets, but also to provide education. We have so many pet vendors here to help education and push that mission of ‘Here’s how we can take care of our pets.’”
The dog show began with the best puppy competition. Five good boys and girl vied for the coveted title of “Best Puppy.”
Four-month-old Estelle, an American Eskimo, took home the crown.
“I didn’t expect it. I thought a different dog would win, but I was really happy to see her come in first,” said Harper Vaughn, one of Estelle’s owners.
Her loving family from Glen Ellyn was right there to cheer her on.
“It’s crazy. I didn’t know she would win,” said Tommy Vaughn, one of Estelle’s owners.
“She’s been such a good girl. We’ve had her for two weeks, and she’s just been amazing with the kids and sleeping through the night. You’ve been the best puppy ever,” said Jessica Vaughn, one of Estelle’s owners.
Just minutes later, some of the fastest local dogs went paw-to-paw in the first race of the day.
Bailey, a 4-year-old Bichon Shih Tzu, proved yet again that size doesn’t equal speed. The reigning champ is back for more hardware.
“This is her third win. She won last year and the year before,” said Lori McNally, Bailey’s owner.
Lori said at the end of the day, everyone wins when the community comes together to better the lives of local pets.
“My husband and I brought singles. Every single tent, we tried to donate a dollar to the tent, because we think it’s so important,” she said.

Illinois’ Matthew Bailey Hopes To Regain 2022 Form After Missing Most Of Last Season
At this point, Illinois Fighting Illini safety is just content being back on the field.
He missed most of last season due to ankle and shoulder injuries. Now, he’s just ready to put everything behind him.
“It was a rough time,” Bailey said. “It’s in the past. I’m more worried about where I’m going.”
Bailey had a promising season as a true freshman in 2022. He played in all 13 games, finishing with three interceptions and 10 tackles. Last year was an expected breakout season but injuries prevented that. He only played one game before undergoing season-ending shoulder surgery in mid-September.
“It’s phenomenal,” Bailey said. “Obviously, I love this game. I love this sport. Just being able to come back after such a long time time off, it’s so thrilling but at the same I can step back and just enjoy the game Because I’ve been out so long, all these aches and pains that I dreaded two years ago, now I enjoy them because it makes me feel I’m back in the groove of things.”
Last season wasn’t a complete waste. He said his used the time on the sideline to become a better student of the game.
‘Being able to watch film a lot and being on the field almost from a coaching perspective and see how the numbers fit and how coverages work,” Bailey said.
