Anti-abortion groups sue Illinois over expanded consumer fraud law targeting crisis pregnancy centers

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV) – Several organizations opposing abortion quickly filed a lawsuit Thursday against Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and Attorney General Kwame Raoul for a new law targeting crisis pregnancy centers.
On Thursday, Pritzker signed off on expanding and clarifying Illinois’ consumer fraud laws to crisis pregnancy centers, which are normally supported by groups who oppose abortion.
The National Institute of Family and Life Advocates, a national network of pregnancy help centers, and several centers in Illinois filed a federal lawsuit seeking a restraining order and injunction against the state’s enforcement.
During a press conference Thursday, officials with Planned Parenthood and the state said crisis centers use deceptive practices to sway women from getting abortions.
“For decades, these centers have targeted Planned Parenthood of Illinois patients with offers of free services like pregnancy tests or ultrasounds. The goal of these centers is simple; they’re trying to get people in their doors to stop them from having an abortion,” said Jennifer Welch, the president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Illinois. “Many of these clinics provide misleading and medically inaccurate information. ‘Abortion causes breast cancer, and abortion will make you infertile,’ these things are simply not true.”
“Don’t lie to people. Don’t lie to people. Don’t take people away from where they were intending to go,” Raoul said.
Members of these anti-abortion groups admit to waiting near entrances of Planned Parenthood to deter women from getting abortions but refute using deceitful tactics.
“All of these other states are either restricting abortion or completely eliminating abortion in their state, so Governor Pritzker and the abortion lobby is trying to become the place in the Midwest for abortions,” said Brian Westbrook, the executive director of Coalition Life, an anti-abortion group based out of St. Louis. “We actually get to meet these women at these abortion facilities, and we’ve seen numerous of these clients turn around and leave and decide not to go through with the abortion. We at Coalition Life have never been deceptive and certainly are law-abiding. They go out, and they show these options. They talk with these women, and they want to provide free resources. Based on our strong conservative viewpoints and religious freedoms–not going to refer a client to an abortion facility. So, we’re going to omit that piece of data, and, certainly, the attorney general may come after us and other pregnancy centers because we are doing that.”
A number of websites identify these so-called fake or faith clinics across the state. Several are located in the Metro East, like Mosaic Health. Besides free resources, Mosaic’s website states it doesn’t provide referrals to abortion services.
The pregnancy centers have won in court before. A 2016 law requiring them to provide information on where clients could get an abortion was halted by a federal appeals court and still awaits trial court argument. But the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in June 2018 that a similar law in California was unconstitutional.

In response to growing community interest in supporting law enforcement and building stronger partnerships in the fight against crime, Kendall County Sheriff Dwight Baird invites county residents to become citizen members of the Illinois Sheriffs’ Association.
For more than 97 years, the ISA has provided critical resources to Sheriff’s offices across Illinois.
“As a citizen member, you can directly support these efforts, helping to enhance crime prevention programs, provide specialized training for deputies and improve overall safety in our community,” according to a news release from the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office.
Invitations will arrive by mail only – ISA never solicits donations by phone, the release said.
“A sheriff’s top priority is protecting lives and property,” Baird said in the release. “Community support is essential in keeping our neighborhoods safe. By becoming a citizen member, you are making an investment in the future of our county.”
Residents who do not receive an invitation but want to learn more can visit the Illinois Sheriffs’ Association at ilsheriff.org/membership.

Northern Illinois could be in for a stormy Sunday, with tornadoes possible.
The National Weather Service is expecting two windows for storms Sunday, from daybreak to 10 a.m. and from 2 to 6 p.m., according to its website.
In McHenry County, thunderstorms are possible after 5 a.m. Sunday and patchy fog is expected overnight into Sunday, between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m.
The NWS said the earlier window during the day Sunday might have isolated to scattered coverage and a main threat of damaging winds and small hail.
The afternoon window is the primary “severe threat window” and while damaging winds are the main threat, damaging hail and tornadoes are possible, according to the NWS.
In the afternoon, the highest storm threats are areas east of a line running northeast to southwest from Waukegan, cutting through Kane and La Salle Counties and continuing southwest out of the northern Illinois region.
The NWS encourages people to have multiple ways of getting warnings and have a plan ready if a warning is issued for their area.
For Sunday night into Monday, the NWS forecasts rain showers, likely before 2 a.m., with a chance of rain and snow showers between 2 and 4 a.m., followed by a chance of snow showers after 4 a.m. Little to no snow accumulation is expected, according to the forecast.
The NWS expects another spring storm system to make its way across the country in the middle of next week, which could bring another threat of severe weather to the Chicago area Wednesday.

Chicago lawyer appointed interim U.S. Attorney for Northern District of Illinois: sources

CHICAGO – The Trump administration has selected a Chicago lawyer to serve as the next interim U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, sources told FOX 32.
What we know:
Andrew Boutros, a former federal prosecutor, co-chairs government and white-collar investigations at a Chicago law firm.
He also serves as a lecturer at the University of Chicago Law School.
Local Lawmakers Weigh In:
Illinois Senators Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth issued a statement saying, “The White House has assured our offices that there will be no nomination for the permanent U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois until the White House Counsel’s Office has consulted with both of our offices.”
The position remained vacant during the Biden administration due to a hold on U.S. Attorney nominees, including April Perry, who was nominated by President Joe Biden, according to the senators.
“For decades, the Senate has confirmed U.S. Attorneys by voice vote or unanimous consent after consideration by the Judiciary Committee. Before the 117th Congress, the last time a roll call vote was required for a U.S. Attorney nominee was in 1975,” the statement reads.
The senators added that during the Biden administration, Durbin was forced to go through the process twice when a Republican colleague blocked nearly a dozen Justice Department nominees from being confirmed by voice vote.
After a unanimous consent request, the senator lifted the objection, allowing the nominees to be confirmed.
