Twentyman in the Huddle: Lions-Vikings Week 7 preview
On this episode of the Twentyman in the Huddle podcast presented by Microsoft, Tim Twentyman previews the Detroit Lions’ first NFC North matchup of the season when they visit the undefeated Minnesota Vikings. First, Tim welcomes defensive tackle Alim McNeill, who recently signed a four-year contract extension to make Detroit his home through the 2028 season. McNeill shares his mindset through the negotiation process and how grateful he is to remain a part of the organization and stay in the Motor City. Furthermore, Alim talks about his seven-quarterback pressure and two-sack performance vs. Dallas, and his confidence in his fellow D-linemen to step up in Aidan Hutchinson’s absence. Also, Alim shares who he thinks the strongest player is on the team. Next, Pride of Detroit and Lions beat writer Jeremy Reisman joins the show to analyze the three keys to the game. Tim and Jeremy go more in-depth on which defensive linemen have the potential to step up in Hutchinson’s place and they also discuss how Detroit must handle Minnesota’s blitz and elite passing game with quarterback Sam Darnold and wide receiver Justin Jefferson. On the final part of the show, ESPN’s Vikings and pro football reporter Kevin Seifert calls in to discuss all things Minnesota. Kevin shares what he thinks has been the catalyst for the Vikings’ 5-0 start, and how Minnesota defensive coordinator Brian Flores is prepping for Detroit offensive coordinator Ben Johnson’s scheme. Kevin also has insight on the latest Vikings injury news coming out of their bye week, Minnesota’s success with the blitz and one key for the Vikings to remain undefeated following Sunday’s matchup. RECAP: Special teams the difference in Red Wings’ 5-2 loss to Rangers | Detroit Red Wings
DETROIT — Head coach Derek Lalonde pointed to special teams as the deciding factor in the Detroit Red Wings’ 5-2 loss to the New York Rangers at Little Caesars Arena on Thursday night.
The Red Wings (1-3-0; 2 points) finished 1-for-5 on the power play, which included 42 seconds at 5-on-3. The Rangers (3-0-1; 7 points) went 3-for-4.
“You’re going to go through these types of stretches throughout the year, but this just happens to be on the front end,” Lalonde said. “We knew it’d be a tough stretch, just a little frustrated in the way some of these have played out. Again, I’ll take our game in New York [on Monday]. We probably get points against most teams in the league the other night and tonight, just our lack of execution on special teams.”
Detroit found itself trailing 1-0 at 8:30 of the first period after Artemi Panarin took a pass from Vincent Trocheck and buried it short side.
Panarin then pushed it to 2-0 at 15:39 of the first period, whipping a shot past Red Wings goalie Cam Talbot on a power play from above the right face-off circle for his second goal of the night.
Just 1:27 into the second period, Moritz Seider ripped the puck top shelf to cut Detroit’s deficit in half 2-1. J.T. Compher and Lucas Raymond had the assists on Seider’s first goal of the season.
“I thought we had a great start to the second,” Lalonde said. “Obviously we put one in, had a couple chances and after that special teams took over.”
HAMTRAMCK, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) – A Michigan school bus driver has been charged for allegedly fatally striking a 3-year-old girl in Hamtramck.
Marvin Lee Flentroy, 64, of Pontiac, is charged with reckless driving causing death, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office. Flentroy was arraigned on Oct. 10 and received a $10,000 personal bond. He is ordered not to drive.
Prosecutors say on July 16, Flentroy was at the intersection of Burger and MacKay streets when he struck the child as he was turning on Burger Street. The child crossing the street when she was hit.
She was taken to the hospital where she died from her injuries.
A preliminary examination is scheduled for Oct. 31.
DETROIT (WXYZ) — Detroit Fire officials are searching for a suspect who they say firebombed a home on the city’s west side this summer.
Authorities say it happened on Friday, June 7, at a home on the 19200 block of Appleton.
Investigators say no one was home when the suspect, seen in the yellow shirt he’s wearing in the photo above, allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail into the home. No injuries were reported from the incident, but the home suffered severe damage.
