DETROIT – Mayor Mike Duggan helped welcome 30 new Detroit Department of Transportation bus drivers.

Friday’s (Jan. 5) group of graduates completed months of classroom and on-the-road training to receive their official operator badges.

Their graduation came just one day after Duggan announced a pay raise for DDOT operators.

“This is one of the largest classes we’ve badged in DDOT history,” said a man speaking at the podium.

The ceremony was a celebration of hard work — the graduates completed months of classroom and on-the-road training to receive their official operator badges.

“The key focus of what we needed to do, first, was to be safe,” said graduate Olealcha Gray-Woods. “Practice safety. They gave us the tools and the weapons on these roads to overcome any obstacles on our routes.”

The grads cheered each other on — saying their class was like a family.

“Helping each other, making sure we got to class on time and work on time, we were more like a family group that held it down,” said another graduate.

Duggan was one of the speakers at the ceremony, emphasizing the value they bring to the city.

“Yesterday you got the news, you thought you were making $16.50 an hour and now you’re making $19.50 an hour,” Duggan said.

One by one, the operators came up to get their certificates. And from there, they’ll be ready to get behind the wheel.

Approximately 45 more DDOT drivers are expected to graduate next month.

(CBS DETROIT) – Detroit Lions hats are now temporarily part of the Detroit Police Department’s attire.

Chief Todd A. Bettison announced Wednesday that officers can wear either a Detroit Lions skullcap or ballcap when they are in uniform. It’s just one of the ways that community leaders and fans are showing support for the Lions as the NFL playoffs continue.

“Congratulations to the Lions on their historic season! Go Lions!!” the department’s Facebook post said.

The Lions took a 31-9 win over the Minnesota Vikings Sunday, which gave them home-field advantage and the top seed in the NFC playoffs. The team currently has a bye week for the divisional round during the weekend of Jan. 18.

The Super Bowl is on Feb. 9.

On Monday, Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard authorized his staff to wear Lions baseball caps and beanies through the playoff run. The Spirit of Detroit statue also has been attired in a Honolulu blue Lions jersey.

Wayne State University employee fatally struck by vehicle while walking in Detroit

Police continue to search for missing Warren woman, Red Wings win 5th straight and more top stories

(CBS DETROIT) – A Wayne State University employee has died after they were struck by a vehicle while walking in Detroit Wednesday morning.

The incident happened at about 8:41 a.m. in the area of Woodward and Warren avenues.

Detroit police say two vehicles were involved in a crash and one of the cars hit the employee. The employee was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash is under investigation.

The university says it is offering counseling and psychological services for staff. Services are also available to students.

“We are connecting with our colleague’s loved ones, with whom we are sharing our heartfelt condolences. Please continue to support and care for one another across our community during this difficult time,” university President Kimberly Espy said in a statement.
