Video shows group rushing into MetroHealth Medical Center emergency room

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Hours after nine people were shot in downtown Cleveland’s Warehouse District and taken to the hospital, a group of people rushed in and pushed its way through the emergency room doors.

A spokesman for MetroHealth Medical Center said the hospital is unsure whether the group was tied to the mass shooting, and it is investigating the incident at the emergency room.

The shooting took place on West 6th Street at 2:30 a.m. Sunday after a gunman opened fire on crowds of people leaving bars and nightclubs in the area. In a separate shooting, three people were wounded in Tremont. All victims were taken to MetroHealth.

At about 5 a.m., a group of people rushed through the emergency department’s doors at MetroHealth’s Scranton Road entrance. MetroHealth police officers confronted the group, whose members immediately ran out of the building and left the hospital’s campus.

Airica Steed, the president and CEO of the hospital, said the group did not enter emergency rooms where patients were, and operations were not disrupted. As the group’s members ran in, they knocked over the weapon detector, which was off-line for several hours. The entire incident at the emergency room entrance lasted about a minute. No police officers were harmed.

“Safety must always be our paramount concern, and I am grateful for the quick actions of our officers,” Steed said in an email to employees.
