Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man, died three days after a confrontation with Memphis law enforcement officials. The 5 officers, who’re all Black, had been charged with second-degree homicide and different crimes on Thursday.
Here is how some Ohio politicians, police departments and others responded to the video’s launch:
Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval:
“At this time, our hearts are with Tyre Nichols, his grieving household, and your complete Memphis neighborhood. This tragedy requires a complete and open investigation. It is one more reminder that we have now a lot extra work forward of us to make sure an equal and truthful prison justice system for all. We’ll by no means cease pushing for our beliefs.”
Cincinnati Police Division:
The Cincinnati Police Division will at all times honor and respect everybody’s 1st Modification proper. At anytime when an meeting of peaceable protest or civil unrest happen, CPD has a plan and procedures in place for every occasion.
Moreover, the next assertion from Police Chief Teresa Theetge:
“As your Police Chief, I wish to reassure the residents of Cincinnati that CPD will stay dedicated to our partnerships with the neighborhood and proceed to keep up our excessive requirements of treating everybody with dignity and respect, due to the division’s tradition, procedures, and coaching we have now in place.”
Cleveland Mayor Justin M. Bibb:
The video proof launched as we speak within the beating dying of Tyre Nichols in Memphis is horrifying. I’m heartbroken for Tyre’s family-his mother and father, his siblings, and his younger son. No household ought to ever need to expertise what they’re going by means of proper now.
We’ve been right here too many instances with out reaching the change we so desperately want.
What occurred in Memphis on January 7 lays naked what’s at stake if we don’t get police reform proper. Regardless of heightened consciousness and nationwide organizing and activism within the wake of the killing of George Floyd, change shouldn’t be occurring quick sufficient.
We should do higher, and it begins with actual accountability, actual oversight, and dealing in partnerships throughout our communities.
Right here in Cleveland, the brand new Group Police Fee-established by Subject 24-met for the primary time on Wednesday to start their crucial work as one of many strongest citizen oversight boards within the nation. We imagine that that is the start of a brand new period in constitutional policing, powered by individuals and arrange for actual and lasting change.
I be part of leaders from throughout the nation in denouncing the brutality that took this younger man’s life, in calling for peace because the investigations proceed, and in asking for justice for Tyre Nichols and his family members.
Nationwide Underground Railroad Freedom Heart in Cincinnati:
At this time, we discover ourselves in a surprisingly acquainted state of affairs: a nation in mourning over the unjust and brutal dying of an individual by the hands of legislation enforcement. A dying captured on bodycam footage that household, buddies and a complete nation is pained to relive in gritty, coronary heart wrenching element. A dying that, as soon as once more, exhibits the dire want for modifications in legislation enforcement. Because the household and family members of Tyre Nichols grieve his loss, we should come collectively and demand higher of our nation and of legislation enforcement – higher coaching, higher procedures, higher accountability. We should demand that our legislation enforcement serves and protects ALL individuals.
The homicide of Mr. Nichols is a painful reminder that this is a matter that cuts throughout shade traces. It’s confirmed to be a systemic difficulty: our legislation enforcement is failing us too usually. For years we have now demanded improved, equitable police-community relations. For years we have now demanded implicit bias coaching. For years we have now demanded accountability. It’s previous time we take a more in-depth have a look at the establishment of legislation enforcement and make a concerted police-community effort to make sure there are not any extra shattered communities, no extra empty chairs, no extra grieving households.
Change should come from inside these programs, and we should demand it. We encourage individuals to make their voices heard – by peacefully protesting, by contacting their legislators, by contacting their police departments to start significant conversations that end in constructive change. We anticipate, and hope, legislation enforcement across the nation will respect people’ constitutional proper to peacefully assemble.
We’re happy to see the Memphis DA fulfill the duties of their workplace and work to carry the officers concerned in Mr. Nichols’s dying accountable. We now name upon our prison justice system to uphold its duty below the legislation with the expectation that Mr. Nichols’s household and family members, and your complete nation, could be assured that we are going to discover true justice as we proceed the pursuit of unwavering accountability in our legislation enforcement and prison justice programs.
Hearts are damaged. Communities are grieving. Feelings are uncooked. However we should not shut these feelings down; we should use them to encourage considerate motion. We should not let this second cross with out demanding actual motion to enhance legislation enforcement coaching, procedures and neighborhood relations.
Columbus Division of Police Chief Elaine Bryant:
“After watching the movies launched from the Memphis Police Division, I’m deeply heartbroken and saddened. The actions of those former officers don’t symbolize the requirements we maintain right here on the Columbus Division of Police. Our officers are skilled to deal with each particular person with dignity and humanity. We respect our neighborhood’s proper to voice their frustration and can give them the house to take action peacefully. We’ll proceed to hear and work collectively to construct belief. I’m dedicated to making sure this company units the usual for police and neighborhood relationships.”

Columbus Public Security Director Robert Clark:
I’m sickened by what I simply witnessed. The utter lack of humanity displayed by these officers flies within the face of the oath taken by legislation enforcement in all places.
For these of us who’ve devoted our careers to public security and public service, the acts seen on this video are merely unconscionable.
I ask you to affix me in praying for the household of Tyre Nichols, and echoing their requires peace and justice.
Cleveland Metropolis Council Management Workforce:
Cleveland, Ohio (January 27, 2023) – The Memphis Police Division lately launched a video displaying the dying of Tyre Nichols. The Cleveland Metropolis Council management workforce lengthen condolences to the household and buddies of Mr. Nichols and stands united in talking out in opposition to police brutality. Staying silent contributes to the issue. Sadly, the incident in Memphis shouldn’t be distinctive.

Cleveland is taking steps to foster higher community-police relationships. These steps embody laws handed by Council in 2022 that requires the discharge of video footage inside seven days of an incident involving a police officer’s use of lethal pressure, efforts to enhance police-community relationships by way of the Group Relations Board, partnering with our consent decree monitor, and seating the newly shaped Group Police Fee. Council appointed three members to the Fee and permitted the appointment of the mayor’s ten picks to the Fee.
Working with the Cleveland Division of Police and neighborhood advocates, Council stays dedicated to constructing higher community-police relationships in Cleveland.

Cleveland native remembers playing “mean elf” in a Christmas classic
CLEVELAND — Not many movies stand the test of time, but “A Christmas Story” is a genuine classic.
The 1983 film only lasted a month in the box office but has since become a cult classic, drawing fans to the Cleveland home where it was shot all year long. One northeast Ohio native had a small but memorable part in the film and made lifelong friendships.
Drew Hocevar may be remembered for playing the “mean elf” in the film, but he’s anything but.
Known as the “male elf” in the credits, it’s the only acting role Hocevar has ever auditioned for. He was working at Higbees department store when he got the part.
“They just called me, and I got the elf part!” he said.
He said it was just something fun to do. Being a teacher is what really paid the bills. Hocevar is a former special education teacher and now volunteers as a mechanic working on the merry-go-round at the Western Reserve Historical Society.
Some of the artifacts he saved from the movie are on display at the museum.
“I snagged my hat and ran,” he said.
He said the rest of the costume was thrown away.
Hocevar’s cast-signed poster and bb-gun are on display at the museum
The museum has a few other special “A Christmas Story” displays, including Lego sculptures depicting memorable scenes from the movie including Hocevar’s scene of him pushing kids down a slide on a fake snow-topped mountain.
Over 40 years later he remains friends with some of the cast including his elf counterpart and recently had lunch with her.
The movie plays numerous times throughout the holiday season, but Hocevar said he tends not to watch. His friends, however, have a special name for Christmas Day.
“24 hours of Drew!” he said.
