Donny Osmond brings Las Vegas glitz, schmaltz to MGM Northfield Park

NORTHFIELD, Ohio — Donny Osmond rapped on Friday night.

Let that sink in for a moment. The vanilla 1970s teen heartthrob and longtime entertainer spit rhymes for several minutes during his concert at the MGM Northfield Park racino. It was tongue-in-cheek and served as a brief survey of the highs and lows of his six decades in show business, which he called his “Auto-rap-ography,” but he did it.

And frankly, it was kind of amusing.

That’s probably the most charitable way to describe Osmond’s show, which saw him singing and dancing his way through tunes that spanned his career. Osmond performed song after inoffensive song, rarely rocking the boat enough to be anything more than pleasant background music if you have the radio on and don’t really want to pay attention to it.

It was only when he went off script a little bit that the performance really came alive.

The show Osmond brought to Northfield is an adaptation of one he has performed at Harrah’s Las Vegas since 2021. It’s a slick Vegas show through and through, right down to the dancers, coat changes, a kick line and covers of “Luck Be a Lady” and “Viva Las Vegas.

”Osmond seemed to revel in it, too, noting that this show comes a few years after an 11-year run with a previous show with his sister, Marie.

”Was that show biz-zy enough for you guys or what?” he asked the audience at one point.

All he was missing was a casino. Oh wait, he had that too.

Starting off with the 1989 hit “Soldier of Love,” Osmond breezed through rock, pop, soul, jazz and show tunes over 90 minutes (oh, and rap too). He was backed by a quartet whose sound can be best compared to a band attendees hear at a corporate convention.

From early hit “Puppy Love” to songs from his 2021 album “Start Again” and everything in between, nearly every era was represented, including his time with Marie and his brothers in The Osmonds.

Now in his 60s, he still has an impressive voice and dance moves. His stage presence hasn’t diminished either, as evidenced by the reactions of an adoring audience whose members wanted nothing more than to say how much they loved him (or, in a couple of instances, for him to sign old records).

Musically, Osmond fared best when he trotted out songs from his time playing the title character in the musical “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamboat” or the singing voice of Captain Li Shang in the Disney cartoon “Mulan,” though the latter featured bizarre choreography that involved the dancers engaging in stick fighting.

He also didn’t sound too bad on newer song “Don’t Stop,” which included a snippet of George Benson’s smooth jazz version of “Breezin’” by Cleveland native Bobby Womack.

But then there was the schmaltz, and plenty of it. He butchered The Beatles’ “In My Life” by turning it into an overwrought ballad. His sister, Marie, to whom he dedicated it and featured through a series of archival clips, deserved better.

Newer song “Start Again,” featuring Osmond at the piano, suffered a similar fate.

Thankfully, such lows were few and far between, as the show mostly provided lighthearted and harmless entertainment.

It found stronger footing during a 15-minute portion where Osmond performed snippets of songs requested by the audience. The segment gave him a chance to go off-script and relax a bit.

At one point, which was bound to happen when fans pick from a career that spans 65 albums, he didn’t remember the song “Sunshine Rose” from this 1973 album “Alone Together.” Osmond still gave it a go, though, singing along to lyrics he read from an audience member’s cellphone.

It was a funny and endearing moment, and stuck out during what otherwise was a well-oiled machine of a show.
