San Francisco pedestrian death toll rises to 10 after fatal Mission hit-and-run
SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A hit-and-run crash on Mission Street in San Francisco killed a pedestrian this week. The 41-year-old man was fatally struck on June 10 where Mission Street intersects with Cortland Avenue. His death brings the city’s total number of pedestrian deaths up to 10 in 2024.
“Our hearts break for a precious life lost,” said Jodie Medeiros, executive director of Walk San Francisco. “The person killed at Mission and Cortland is not just a number, but a human life lost. Every life lost on San Francisco streets matters. We can’t let these tragedies go by unnoticed.”
Walk San Francisco, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing traffic violence, says speed is the No. 1 cause of fatal traffic collisions in the city.
Transportation officials said speed contributed to the horrific West Portal crash that killed an entire family who were waiting at a bus stop to visit the zoo on March 16.
2024 Pedestrian Deaths in San Francisco, according to WSF:
January 31 at Fulton Street and Arguello Boulevard: A 63-year-old man was killed.
February 8 at 6th Street and Bryant Avenue: David Bridges Jr., 31, was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver in the SoMa neighborhood. The driver took off, leaving Bridges on the ground. His father told KRON4, “You can’t let a killer keep driving a car. You need to turn that killer in.”
February 25 at Alemany Boulevard and Rousseau Street: A 76-year-old man was struck while crossing the intersection in the Excelsior neighborhood.
March 2 at Golden Gate Avenue and Hyde Street: Michael Lukehart, 41, was fatally hit by a driver.
March 16 at a West Portal bus stop: Parents Diego Cardoso de Oliveira, 40, Matilde Ramos Pinto, 38, and their children, 1-year-old Joaquin Ramos Pinto de Oliveira and 2-month-old Cauê Ramos Pinto de Oliveira, were on a family trip heading to the zoo.
Municipal Transportation Agency investigators said a Mercedes SUV driver was speeding into on-coming traffic when it barreled into the bus stop. The entire family was killed, and the infant’s organs were donated to save the lives of other children. The driver was arrested and charges are pending.
May 23 at Ellis Street and Jones Street: A man was walking across Ellis Street when he was hit.
June 10 at Mission Street and Cortland Avenue: A 41-year-old man was killed by a hit-and-run driver.

San Francisco Supervisor Jackie Fielder to return following mental health leave
San Francisco Supervisor Jackie Fielder will resume her duties next week after taking a three-month leave of absence due to mental health.
“I’m coming clear-eyed and grounded and eager to serve in this role again,” Fielder said in a video posted to social media Tuesday.
Fielder was first elected in 2024 to serve District 9, which includes the Mission District and Bernal Heights and Portola neighborhoods. In late March of this year, her staffers announced she was taking a leave of absence to address an “acute personal health crisis” after missing a few weeks of Board of Supervisors meetings.
“I left the work that I love so much, not because I wanted to, but because my mental health demanded it, and I say that with no shame,” she said.
In the video statement, Fielder mentioned that the pressure of serving as a supervisor took a toll on her mental health.
“I’ve often felt like the weight of this district and city is on my shoulders, and I, through this leave, have had the silver lining of understanding that it never has,” she said. “I was going 100 miles an hour since early 2023 when I started the campaign for supervisor, and being a grassroots candidate is a lot of elbow grease.”
Fielder’s staff continued some of the work in her district while she was gone. She thanked her colleagues and Mayor Daniel Lurie for their support and allowing her to be excused from meetings.
Fielder will return to work Monday and appear at the June 30 board meeting. She is also expected to host listening sessions in her district through July.
“I am an example that it is possible to come back and heal,” she said. “I could not be more honored to serve and more ready to serve.”
