San Diego couple brings North Pole to life
SAN DIEGO — Bringing the North Pole to San Diego starts on the roof in 80-degree weather.
“Here in San Diego on a nice wintery day, we’ve got the tree up,” joked Terry Dickson. “It’s time for the snowman.”
Dickson is the mastermind behind a huge tree of lights that can be seen from blocks away, as well as the other inflatable touches on his rooftop.
“It’s almost like flying a kite,” he said while setting up a giant snowman.
His wife Priscilla Dickson tackles the decorating from the ground. Together, they have been going all-out decorating for Christmas for the last 15 years.
“It reminds us of our childhood,” Priscilla Dickson said. “All the Christmas movies I grew up with in the ‘60s and ‘70s, we just love it.”
The couple is well known in their University Heights neighborhood. They have bragging rights as the winner of Lights in the Heights, a contest to determine who in the neighborhood has the best holiday lights on display.
Terry and Priscilla Dickson spend weeks turning their home into a Christmas hub. With one side dedicated to the traditional, and the other side a tribute to the more modern parts of the holiday.
“It’s not about just Christmas. It’s about the season of giving and recognizing that there’s other people out there that need some joy in their life,” he said. “It’ll create some memory that they’re children and generations to come may appreciate. And that’s all that I strive for, is extending the spirit of happiness and giving.”
Priscilla Dickson calls her husband her “real-life Clark Griswald” and the couple said they have no plans to stop their hardcore Christmas decorating.

13 San Diego Co. Rubio's Close Due To 'Rising Cost Of Doing Business'
SAN DIEGO, CA — “The rising cost of doing business in California” contributed to Rubio’s Coastal Grill officials decision to close 13 San Diego County locations Friday, a spokesperson told local media outlets.
KGTV is reporting Rubio’s closed 48 underperforming locations across California on May 31, including locations in Pacific Beach, El Cajon, Escondido, La Jolla, San Marco, Solana Beach and Vista. The following locations in San Diego also closed:
- 9187 Clairemont Mesa Blvd Suite 7
- 8935 Towne Centre Dr., Suite 100
- 9254 Scranton Rd, Ste 105
- 7835 Highlands Village Place, Suite D101
- 2260 Callagan Hwy Bldg. 3187
- 910 Grand Avenue
Rubio’s is among California fast food restaurants affected by an increase in minimum wage costs, which took effect this past year. In 2024, California’s hourly minimum wage increased to $16 for most workers on January 1st and to $20 for fast food workers in April.
Alan Gin, an economics professor with the University of San Diego, told NBC 7 San Diego there have been other factors — on top of the wage increases — affecting Rubio’s, which has had financial difficulties for awhile. In 2015, the business had 193 locations nationwide.
“So –they’ve cut about a third of those and so they’re going to cut another third with the closings that were announced yesterday,” he told NBC.
In 202o, the business filed for bankruptcy, citing COVID-19 as having a significant impact on the business.
“This restructuring plan creates the long-term financial stability we need to continue to serve our communities for years to come,” co-founder Ralph Rubio said in a statement.

Padres Make Big Roster Moves Ahead of Game Against Royals, Place Yu Darvish, Joe Musgrove On IL
The San Diego Padres announced that their right-handed starting pitches, Yu Darvish and Joe Musgrove, will be placed on the 15-day injured list.
The official San Diego Padres’ Twitter/X account and Kevin Acee from the San Diego Union-Tribune were the first to break the news on Saturday morning.
According to Acee, Musgrove’s and Darvish’s injuries, while not season-ending, are significant. Musgrove is still grappling with right elbow inflammation, and his placement date is retroactive to May 29. This is a recurrence of the triceps tendinitis that had already sent him to the injured list at the beginning of May, affecting the one-time All-Star’s performance.
The Padres recalled right-handed pitcher Randy Vásquez to replace Musgrove. Vásquez will start in Saturday’s game against the Kansas City Royals. The 25-year-old will get another shot in the big leagues after posting a 5.82 ERA and 1.75 WHIP in 21.2 innings and five starts.
Darvish is on the IL after leaving Wednesday’s game against the Miami Marlins due to a left groin strain. His IL stint is retroactive to May 30. Darvish will be eligible to return on June 14. Taking Darvish’s place in the rotation will be right-handed pitcher Logan Gillaspie. Gillaspie holds a 0.00 ERA in two appearances with four strikeouts.

Oregon Baseball Opens Up Their Postseason With A Win Over San Diego
Oregon baseball opened their postseason run in the Santa Barbara Regional with a win over San Diego, 5-4. The game was quite compelling even as it was at parts both marvelous and frustrating to watch at the same time.
RJ Gordon has been the leading starter for the first game of the weekend series this season and was again the starter for the first game against the Toreros. San Diego brought their big gun, Josh Randall, to the hill against the Ducks.
The game started as a pitcher’s duel with the offenses of both sides not being able to connect for runs in the first four innings. Scratch beneath the surface of the box score, however, and one pitcher was distinguishing himself better than the other – and it wasn’t Gordon.
In the first five innings in which the starters were on the mound, Randall fanned 6 batters, while Gordon only recorded 3 Ks. The Oregon bats were not able to get a solid bead on Randall, who walked none of the Ducks in his start. Even when he gifted Oregon base-runners by hitting batters with pitches, the Ducks could not capitalize.
That’s not to say that RJ Gordon’s outing was a bad start. It wasn’t, and even if he was being helped by a great Oregon defense, he wasn’t giving up home runs.
Something had to give, and that something happened in the fifth inning.
Carter Garate drew first blood in the fifth with a solo shot to lead off the top of the inning.
In the bottom of the fifth, Gordon picked up a pair of fly-up outs and could not close the inning. The Toreros pecked away at him with a single, a walk, and another single to tie the score 1-1.
Randall opened up the top of the sixth inning by giving up a single and hitting the third batter of the game, and with two on base and no outs his afternoon was done. San Diego could not quash Oregon’s offensive momentum, and after loading the bases the Ducks followed with a couple of sacrifice plays to take the score to 3-1.
The Ducks rolled the dice by keeping Gordon in the game, and were rewarded with San Diego flying or grounding out in the sixth and seventh innings.
In the top of the eighth inning, and with two outs, Carter Garate hit a double to extend Oregon’s lead to 4-1.
In the bottom of the eighth, Oregon pushed their luck too much by trotting Gordon back out on the hill. At best, Gordon’s game begins to fall off after his pitch count hits the mid-90’s, and with a pitch count at 110 the Ducks had no business keeping him in the game. It should not have been a surprise at all when he walked the first Torero batter, and San Diego followed up with a single to put two on base with no outs.
Brock Moore came in for relief. Unfortunately for both him and the Ducks, San Diego immediately clocked him for a three run homer.
Moore walked the next two batters and his miserable outing was over. It was up to Logan Mercado to come in and stop the arterial blood loss.
The game became a nail biter. Mercado can be brilliant at times and also give up home runs and the lead at times. Both sides could not score and with Mercado trying to help keep Oregon in this ball game, the tension was real with the foreboding that every one of his pitches could yield a leadoff home run and send the Ducks to the path of elimination.
It may not have been pretty, but pretty does not win ball games and Mercado did everything he had to do to send the game into extra innings.
In the top of the 11th inning, Bryce Boettcher connected with the second pitch throw at him – a solo shot to left field that would be all Oregon needed to come away with the win.
Mercado’s white-knuckle pitching in the 11th made the bottom of the inning seem like forever, but the lead stuck and Oregon escaped with a win.

And we recap with the game highlights:
UC Santa Barbara had their own not-very-pretty win against Fresno State, but came out on top 9-6 and will face Oregon on Saturday. The teams know each other and play nearly every season in the nonconference slate. The Gauchos took the series earlier in the season, and if there is a game that is must-see for Oregon baseball, this is the game.
Oregon vs. Santa Barbara is Saturday at 7:00 pm PT. The game is scheduled to be shown on ESPN+.
