(Oregon Coast) – It is a large world of surprises on these seashores. Oregon’s shores current some wild finds in nature – generally hundreds of thousands of years outdated – and discoveries in how mankind has categorized issues out right here. Attending to know the Oregon coast higher at all times means just a few raised eyebrows. (Above: picture Oregon Coast Seaside Connection)
Blobs of Bulbous Bulbs. What are these large piles of tube-like issues on the Oregon and Washington coast? They’re roughly vegetation: they’re known as bull kelp and are primarily massive brown algae that develop in “forests” simply offshore.
In accordance with the Hatfield Marine Science Heart, these kelp are annuals, finishing their life cycle in a single season, and may develop as much as 20 meters (60 toes) in a single yr. On the backside, their branching “holdfasts” anchor the kelp, though some are torn free in storms. Their lengthy stipes (stems) tangle collectively to type massive piles, as you see within the {photograph}. Their floats have a excessive proportion of carbon monoxide and to maintain the blades (leaves) close to the floor for photosynthesis. Their easy, roundish shapes, when bobbing within the ocean, are generally confused with seals. Full story right here.

South Oregon Coast’s Actual Gold Round Gold Seaside. It seems Gold Seaside acquired its title for a cause: there actually is gold in them thar seashores. Even to today it nonetheless exists.
These are minuscule specks, nonetheless, and nothing that can get you wealthy. Nonetheless, you’re going to get sore simply making an attempt to get something. Sifting sand round right here is back-breaking, boring work, but it surely’s nonetheless achieved recreationally, and there are some who really eek out a small revenue.
Search for the black sands of the realm, not simply in Gold Seaside however from Cape Arago down by way of Bandon and into Gold Seaside.
All of it hit about the identical time as the large gold rush in Cali, and there was even an operational mine close to Bandon at one level. Geologists imagine these tiny bits come down from the Rogue River and the bigger lodes to the east, washed down by rivers and streams.
Damaged and Debunked Information of the Oregon Coast. Claims of information being damaged alongside the shoreline are many, together with some exaggerated proclamations of largest or no matter. Some simply will not be true. (Above: Depoe Bay)
One which positively is true resides simply north of Florence. Sea Lion Caves is the most important sea cave on this planet. The Guinness Guide of World Information confirmed that within the ’90s, noting the cave clocked in at 310 toes lengthy, 164 toes large and about 50 toes excessive.
On and off, Lincoln Metropolis claimed the D River is the shortest on this planet, and there is doubtless nonetheless the identical signal there. That is not precisely true, and the explanations that declare was made goes again many years. Oregon Coast Seaside Connection checked with the Guinness individuals again within the 2000s and confirmed there was no such designation given to the city – or its supposed competitor, a river in Montana.
What is the world’s smallest navigable harbor? Properly, it is not precisely Depoe Bay as their signal says. There technically isn’t any such official class for that. But it surely’s nonetheless one cozy cove, and getting out and in isn’t any simple feat.
Lastly, what’s the shortest lighthouse on the west coast? That is Cape Meares, close to Tillamook, clocking in at a stumpy 38 toes excessive. Nonetheless, the north Oregon coast icon stands on a 217-foot-high cliff, thus ending up because the tallest sentinel right here.
Seaside Fossil Enjoyable. There are tons of historical, solidified creatures hundreds of thousands of years outdated simply floating round seashores of the Oregon coast and in rocks across the area – even the cliffs. Nonetheless, it is unlawful to dig something out of a floor: you need to wait till they’ve shaken themselves unfastened by time and tides. (Above: Fogarty Seaside)
They are much simpler to seek out in winter when sand ranges get low and expose bedrock or agate beds. Newport’s Moolack Seaside is notoriously smothered in them. When the darkish bedrock reveals, you’ll be able to see lots of of shapes inside inside just a few toes of you.

In accordance with native consultants, Oregon’s “seashores are dwelling to one of many heaviest concentrations of 15- to 30-million-year-old fossils in North America.” A number of the finest shell areas are at Charleston close to Coos Bay, north of Florence at Strawberry Hill, the small car parking zone north of Seal Rock and the part of seashore simply north of Ona Seaside State Park (close to Waldport.)

This Oregon coast destination is one of ‘The 28 Most Beautiful Towns in America’
Oregon just keeps popping up on best-of lists, saluting our state’s food, campgrounds, scenery, and so on. Now, another accolade has come our way, as a popular vacation destination on the north Oregon coast has made the list of “The 28 Most Beautiful Towns in America.”
The list, compiled by Condé Nast Traveler magazine, consists of everything from “coastal cities to southern gems,” as the article says, adding, “these idylls are worth a visit.”
So, which Oregon north coast municipality takes the honors as a “most beautiful” town? Is it Astoria? Seaside? Manzanita? Gearhart?
Not surprisingly, Cannon Beach gets the nod. The town known for its scenic stretch of sandy beach, the imposing Haystack Rock, the annual Sandcastle Contest, super-tasty fish and chips, a top-ranked beach resort, and many more accolades, can now add this one, too.
But then again, any Oregonian who has visited Cannon Beach can testify that the place is gorgeous, and its natural setting is magnificent, as the tourist crowds indicate.
This community is Oregon’s most charming small town, according to HGTV
According to the Condé Nast Traveler magazine article, “While most travelers flock to New York and Los Angeles, the most beautiful small towns in America offer an entirely different —and, dare we say, better? — glimpse at what this country has to offer. You’ll find tiny enclaves filled with friendly locals, walkable downtown areas lined with mom-and-pop cafes, quaint boutique hotels, and incredible views of some of the best landscapes in the U.S.”
Here’s what the list entry for Cannon Beach says: “Drive about 80 miles northwest of Portland and you’ll wind up on one of the most beautiful stretches of sand in the country: Cannon Beach. The eponymous village on the shore was officially incorporated in 1957, and it’s popular today for its cute chocolate shops, art galleries, microbreweries, and cozy vacation rentals. It’s perhaps best known for Haystack Rock, a 235-foot monolith protruding out of the water—enjoy the views from nearby Ecola State Park or the guest rooms at Stephanie Inn”
In addition to Cannon Beach, other communities on the “most beautiful” list include Magnolia Springs, Alabama; Bar Harbor, Maine; Leavenworth, Washington; Sedona, Arizona; Portsmouth, New Hampshire; Marfa, Texas; Mackinac Island, Michigan; Cape May, New Jersey; Ketchikan, Alaska; Carmel-by-the-Sea, California; Snowmass Village, Colorado; Friday Harbor, Washington; Whitefish, Montana; and Deadwood, South Dakota.
