Jim Harbaugh Makes Sense for the Broncos and Russell Wilson

One other NFL Monday, one other in-season coach firing—our third of this yr. So let’s begin there …

• Possibly Nathaniel Hackett would have failed regardless. However, with the advantage of hindsight, you can see in his first recreation as Broncos coach on Sept. 12 that issues may go this fashion.

On Monday Night time Soccer, there have been coaches, league-wide, who seen how Russell Wilson appeared to have management over recreation administration within the remaining moments of the Denver’s 17–16 loss to Seattle—as a now notorious scenario unfolded—with the Broncos failing to name a timeout, and letting 40 seconds bleed off the clock to drive a 64-yard area aim strive from Brandon McManus with 20 seconds left. The Broncos’ workers appeared to only stand there, ready for one thing to occur, perhaps for Wilson to do one thing, because the quarterback let seconds, and alternative, soften away.

The speculation, in fact, adopted a summer time filled with tales of the workplace house Wilson was given within the Broncos’ facility, the workers of parents he had within the constructing, after which, most notably, how a five-year, $245 million extension, together with $124 million assured, was brokered with two years left on his previous contract.

So the season began that means and appeared to suit the place the staff and its new quarterback, and coach, had been, and because it seems, the place they have been going.

The reality is, the minute the Broncos traded for Wilson, Hackett turned a supporting actor within the present Wilson dropped at Denver—a spot the place he’d lastly get the form of setup, each logistically and schematically, that he by no means might’ve had in Seattle. And when issues went improper? New possession, with that contract, was tethered to Wilson in a means it wasn’t to Hackett or anybody else within the constructing. Which left Hackett and his workers with out a lot leverage to alter something, even when they’d needed to.

On the day Hackett was let go, it’s vital not simply to stipulate how issues went so horribly improper for a fired 15-game head coach. However, it’s additionally vital to elucidate what occurs subsequent for the Broncos and their possession.

As a result of wherever the search takes Broncos CEO Greg Penner and the Walton household, that background colours what could be my one nonnegotiable—the following man has to have the leverage to face as much as Wilson. And with that because the backdrop, my feeling is the following man most likely ought to come from one in every of these three classes:

Established head coach: Clearly, Sean Payton’s title was all the time going to be the primary hooked up to this opening, and there’s no want for rationalization on why. However does the 58-year-old former Saints coach actually wish to take his subsequent, perhaps final, shot within the NFL with Wilson? I’m undecided he does.

Assuming it received’t be him, it’s price mentioning that final week, earlier than the mess of the previous couple of days, I heard Jim Harbaugh’s title related to Denver for the primary time. And the extra you concentrate on it, the extra it is sensible. His document was exemplary in San Francisco (44-19-1), with inner strife, not losses, resulting in his exit. There, he helped resuscitate the profession of Alex Smith and launch the profession of Colin Kaepernick. In all places he’s gone, he’s received. He has a relationship with John Elway—from his time as a participant and Stanford coach. And he would most definitely stand as much as Wilson, whom he coached towards within the NFC West.

The downside, in fact, could be that Harbaugh can put on folks, and his welcome, out. Similar to he did with the Niners and in different places. That, as I see it, makes him a form of modern-day Invoice Parcells—a man who is available in, shakes issues up, will get outcomes quick after which, in time, winds up gone earlier than folks thought he’d be. Given the scenario the Broncos are in, with their quarterback and core of in-prime gamers, you can argue that form of coach may very well be simply what the physician ordered for a Denver group that’s form of caught within the right here and now.

I don’t know if Harbaugh’s prepared to go away Michigan, his alma mater, with this system driving excessive undefeated at 13–0 heading into the Faculty Soccer Playoff semifinal towards TCU. However I do know he’s lengthy felt there’s unfinished enterprise for him within the NFL. And he’d be one in every of my first calls.

George Paton–related title: We’re gonna discover out within the coming weeks how tied the brand new possession group actually is to Paton, the Broncos’ GM—Penner stated in his assertion that he’ll lead the search with Paton’s assist, whereas falling properly in need of declaring anybody secure. However let’s say, for argument’s sake, that Penner is about on maintaining Paton in cost.

If that’s the place we’re, then Dan Quinn is the title, because it was final yr, that makes probably the most sense. Quinn labored with Paton in Miami beneath Nick Saban, and was Seattle’s defensive coordinator in 2013 and ’14 in Wilson’s two Tremendous Bowl seasons. The Cowboys DC might additionally convey Dallas guide Brian Schottenheimer, who was Seahawks offensive coordinator from ’18-20, with him to reconnect with Wilson and construct an offense for him.

Quinn’s means wouldn’t be as gruff as Harbaugh’s, and his means to construct relationships with gamers is well-known and properly regarded in NFL circles, a top quality that’d be helpful in Denver.

Sturdy ex-player: The success of the Titans’ Mike Vrabel and the Vikings’ Kevin O’Connell as youthful program leaders ought to get the eye of homeowners—each have been capable of are available in and set up a tradition shortly with gamers they inherited, and get probably the most out of them on each side of the ball. So somebody reminiscent of 49ers DC DeMeco Ryans or Patriots linebackers coach Jerod Mayo (who interviewed for the Broncos job final yr) would make sense.

Mayo or Ryans would command prompt respect. A giant query, in fact, could be whom these guys would rent as assistants. But when Denver’s going to go the first-time head coach route once more, with the circumstances being what they’re, I’d suppose it’d virtually need to be somebody like them, who might simply and naturally stand on the entrance of the room.

And that, by the way in which, is not any affront to a pack of vivid younger offensive coaches who deserve a shot. It’s simply that this most likely isn’t the place to present somebody, or get, that form of probability.

Hackett, I’m certain, might let you know why.

• The one different factor we should always point out right here—assets received’t be an issue for the Broncos, now that they’re led by one of many world’s wealthiest households. That may very well be an x-factor with somebody reminiscent of Payton, who was provided a four-year, $100 million deal by Miami final yr and received’t come less expensive than that. It additionally opens up some wild prospects, and leaves little or no off the desk.

Invoice Belichick? Nick Saban? You possibly can let your thoughts run wild, as a result of there’s an proprietor right here with a historic franchise, a fascinating metropolis to reside in and a wide-open checkbook.

• Chargers coach Brandon Staley can fairly simply finish hypothesis on his job safety with a win tonight—which might clinch a wild-card spot for his staff and make clear the AFC playoff image for everybody. Within the case L.A. does dispatch the Colts, it could be with the Ravens because the doubtless No. 5 and 6 seeds (Baltimore can nonetheless win its division), with Buffalo, Cincinnati and Kansas Metropolis combating excessive three seeds. The AFC South champ is the 4 seed. After which, the Patriots, DolphinsJetsSteelers and Raiders could be left to combat for the final spot.

The opposite factor knocking out Indy would do? The Chargers received’t say I instructed you so on Justin Herbert. However they did. And even when they received’t say it, getting Herbert to the playoffs for the primary time could be fairly satisfying for lots of people in that group.

“All people fights actually laborious for Justin as a result of we all know what sort of particular person he’s, what sort of competitor he’s, what sort of chief he’s,” Staley instructed me. “All people desires to play their finest, coach their finest for Justin. However there’s not going to be any I instructed you so from our group, as a result of we do not function that means. We all know how particular he’s and we needn’t validate him to anyone as a result of he is going to do this.

“And we will try this as a staff.“

• As for the staff on the opposite aspect of the coin tonight, with Jeff Saturday’s trial run winding down, I’d anticipate buzz on Harbaugh and the Colts, as properly. He earned the Captain Comeback moniker in Indy, and his title is within the staff’s Ring of Honor at Lucas Oil Stadium.

• The Cardinals’ loss to the Buccaneers on Sunday night time definitely opened the door for comparable questions in Arizona, one other place the place Payton hypothesis is working rampant. However earlier than attending to Kliff Kingsbury’s job safety, the Cardinals have to determine what to do with their entrance workplace, with GM Steve Keim out on go away and no certainty to return as the person in cost.

One factor I’ve heard is that possession might think about going ahead with a co-GM form of setup (Washington is somewhat like that), with Adrian Wilson and Quentin Harris main the way in which. Harris got here up within the Arizona personnel division and is a broadly revered scout, whereas Wilson, in fact, was a legendary participant in Arizona and has now spent seven years working in that division for the staff.

• It’s laborious to think about that Robert Saleh unofficially ending Zach Wilson’s season Monday, in transferring him to 3rd on the depth chart, received’t have implications in March and April. I don’t doubt Saleh, and the Jets, want to get an extended have a look at Wilson, after spending the No. 2 total decide on him simply 20 months in the past. The issue is the place his staff is true now—trending towards an actual breakthrough in 2023.

With good therapeutic from Breece Corridor, Alijah Vera-Tucker and Mekhi Becton, and good offseasons from Quinnen Williams, Garrett Wilson and Sauce Gardner, the Jets ought to be getting into right into a window of alternative, with strong vets (C.J. Mosley, Laken Tomlinson, Corey Davis, Jordan Whitehead) surrounded by rising younger stars on rookie offers. And that’s the place it’d be powerful for the Jets to sink one other yr into Wilson’s improvement.

Bear in mind, Saleh and OC Mike LaFleur got here from San Francisco, and went to a Tremendous Bowl three years in the past with a sure quarterback (Jimmy Garoppolo) who’ll be out there in three months.

• Right here’s hoping, at the beginning, Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa is all proper as he goes again into the concussion protocol. It’s laborious to think about he’d clear by Sunday since this might be the third such occasion he’s gone by means of this season. However Miami’s playoff hopes are on the road, which makes this an fascinating take a look at as to how groups deal with gamers in these kinds of crucial conditions with lots on the road on the sphere Sunday.

There’s additionally a lot on the road for Tagovailoa, with a call due in Might on his fifth-year possibility and this offseason being the primary during which he’ll be eligible for an extension.

• It was refreshing to listen to Nick Sirianni converse truthfully concerning the prospect of beating the Saints on Sunday, with the No. 1 seed there for the taking and the way the impression of a win would lengthen to April, with Philly holding New Orleans’s first-round decide.

“I’m simply nervous about this recreation,” Sirianni stated, smiling. “Nicely, this recreation immediately impacts each of these issues and the draft standing. So certain, however we’re centered on proper now within the season. It is going to be candy if we are able to go on the market and get this win, after which as soon as we’re making the draft decide later we are able to say to ourselves, properly, That actually did assist us out. That’s our aim although, is simply to win this recreation.

“So far as your query about my mindset or what I form of was considering proper there, I don’t know. I imply, since I’ve been right here and the way a lot belief I’ve in Howie, it was like, Hey, nice commerce. We’ll get our draft decide subsequent yr and decide up on additional one? Cool. I’m into that. No matter we expect we’ve to do to make this staff higher.”

• There’s been a whole lot of speak concerning the Titans and Jaguars resting starters forward of a Week 18 recreation that we already know might be for the AFC South crown. I get the logic. And I’d even perceive if Jacksonville have been to watch out with their guys towards the Texans.

I feel it’s trickier for Tennessee. They’ve misplaced 5 straight. They’ve a rookie quarterback who wants reps. In addition they play Thursday, which provides them 10 days of runway main into the Jacksonville showdown. So yeah, if it’s shut on anybody from an damage standpoint, I can see the place it’d make sense to be cautious. However the Titans actually need to discover a approach to play higher, and I’d wager Mike Vrabel sees Thursday as a shot to start out doing that.

(Misplaced in that is that the sport actually won’t wind up which means a lot for Dallas. The Cowboys look fairly locked in to the fifth seed proper now—their probabilities of profitable the East are distant, and no different wild card can catch them, which implies they’ll doubtless be on the NFC South champ for Wild Card Weekend.)

• The NFL must nice Mac Jones for his hit on Eli Apple. There’s no rationalization for it, and the hit connects again to prior incidents towards the Bears and Panthers over his first two years the place Jones’s intentions have been questionable. There’s a motive why a ton of gamers known as it soiled.

Backside line, the league’s nice system, which routinely protects quarterbacks, can’t be taken severely if it’s not going to punish gamers each methods for this form of factor.

Rockies’ Jake Cave supplies the fireworks in 4-3 win over Brewers

Jake Cave has been a sparkplug for the Rockies this season, running down flyballs in the outfield, taking extra bases and pumping up his teammates.

Thursday night, Cave provided the fireworks.

His solo homer to dead center in the sixth inning lifted Colorado to a 4-3 win over Milwaukee in front of an Independence Day crowd of 48,705 at Coors Field.

Cave’s first homer of the season came on a 1-0 fastball by Brewers starter Tobias Myers. The dinger, which traveled 430 feet, was Cave’s first since Aug. 20 of last season when he played for the Phillies. It snapped a streak of 208 at-bats without a homer.

When he got to the dugout, Cave was treated with the silent treatment, a tradition usually reserved for rookies who hit their first career homer. Third baseman Ryan McMahon was the instigator.

“That’s awesome,” said Cave, who entered Thursday with the fourth-longest active homerless at-bat streak in the majors. “I’ve done it to guys before, too. I was so pumped up I didn’t know what was happening at first as I came down the stairs.

“Then I realized they were doing the silent treatment. It was cool. It was fun.”

Manager Bud Black was thrilled for Cave, someone who plays with the kind of passion that Black loves.

“He’s playing a great all-around game over the last couple of months,” Black said. “He knows how to play. He brings great energy every day, in the dugout and in the clubhouse. He’s gritty.

“He’s capable of (hitting a homer) and I’ll go out there and say that there’s some more coming.”

Colorado right-hander Cal Quantrill battled, as he always does. He gave himself a C grade for his outing.

“I see my job as giving my team a chance to win every fifth day,” Quantrill said. “Sometimes it’s easy, sometimes it’s hard. Tonight it was exceptionally hard. I really didn’t have very good stuff. But the way I look at it, if it’s a ‘C’ game and the team gets a win, it’s hard not to be excited about that.”

Quantrill departed after five innings with Colorado holding a 3-2 lead. He gave up five hits, struck out two and walked four. The four free passes stung him, and he failed to get a quality start for just the third time in his last 12 starts.

But the bottom line was that the right-hander set the Rockies up for victory, and he has a 3.03 ERA in those 12 starts, dating back to May 3.

The Rockies held their breath in the third inning when Quantrill walked gingerly off the field. He fielded William Contreras’ swinging bunt in front of the mound and fired a strike to first to nip Contreras for the inning’s final out. But Quantrill fell during his throw and came up limping slightly. He said he “slightly tweaked” his hamstring.

Quantrill was not sharp in the fourth when he walked three batters to load the bases and paid the price when Andruw Monasterio blooped a two-run single to right, cutting Colorado’s lead to 3-2. Quantrill said the hamstring was not to blame for the three walks.

“I was just trying to be too fine,” he said.

The Brewers tied the game in the sixth off reliever Anthony Molina. Jackson Chourio scorched an RBI double to center, scoring Rhys Hoskins, who drew a one-out walk.

Timely hits gave the Rockies an early 3-0 lead. Charlie Blackmon led off the first with a single, advanced to second on Ezequiel Tovar’s sacrifice bunt and scored on Ryan McMahon’s opposite-field double to left.

In the second, Blackmon’s two-run, pop-up, hustle double to shallow right scored Michael Toglia and Sam Hilliard.

Colorado’s much-maligned, rickety bullpen finally delivered in the clutch. Right-hander Tyler Kinley pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings and lefty Jalen Beeks pitched  1 1/3 scoreless innings for his seventh save.

Beek’s biggest out was striking out pinch-hitter Garrett Mitchell looking at a 96 mph fastball for the final out of the eighth inning with two men on base. Beeks set the Brewers down in order in the ninth, getting All-Star Christian Yelich to chop out to first for the final out.

NFL.com’s Prediction for Broncos’ 2024 MVP Might Not Thrill Sean Payton

NFL.com’s Prediction for Broncos’ 2024 MVP Might Not Thrill Sean Payton

Denver Broncos Pro Bowl cornerback Patrick Surtain II has admitted this offseason that he plans on making improvements over last year’s performance. There’s little doubt that Surtain appears to be the Broncos’ most talented player, so expecting the 24-year-old to keep getting better is a solid bet.

NFL.com’s Eric Edholm went around the league to pick each team’s 2024 MVP, and Surtain was unsurprisingly pegged to be a new and improved version of himself in 2024.

“Though I admit that this race is wide open, I arrived at Surtain pretty quickly. It was never going to be one of the quarterbacks for me, not until I’ve seen more from Jarrett Stidham or Bo Nix. Receiver Courtland Sutton could be that guy, especially with Jerry Jeudy having been traded to Cleveland, but Sutton apparently remains at loggerheads with the team over his contract, and his production will be dependent on how the QBs perform.

“Surtain isn’t even coming off his best year, to be honest; in 2023, he committed more penalties (six) than he had in his first two seasons combined. He also allowed more receptions than he did in either Years 1 or 2, according to Pro Football Focus. But I believe he has the best chance to be Denver’s MVP in 2024, given the makeup of the offense and the fact that he’s the Broncos’ top defender right now, at least on paper. Surtain was a more reliable tackler last season than he’d been previously, and he’s tasked with containing WR1s on a weekly basis. If he can make a few more plays on the ball, earning this honor wouldn’t be a stretch at all,” Edholm wrote.

Surtain has never been short on confidence, but the 70-point humiliation the Broncos defense took squarely on the chin in Miami last season was hard to look past. Year 1 under defensive coordinator Vance Joseph in Denver had its ups and downs, which fully tested Surtain’s mental fortitude.

Entering Year 2 in the system, Surtain has the familiarity with Joseph’s defense and what he’s trying to achieve. Surtain has sounded a lot more enthusiastic about the simplistic and attacking defensive scheme the Broncos are going to run under Joseph moving forward.

“It’s great. Vance, obviously, he’s set a great example for us, just believing in us with his playcalls, but also he’s simplifying it even more, so we can play faster, feel comfortable, and that’s the main thing you want in a defense,” Surtain said via Andrew Mason back in June. “We’ve got the utmost belief in Vance, and I know Vance has the utmost belief in us. It goes hand in hand.”

Truth be told, head coach Sean Payton would probably much prefer that Denver’s MVP ultimately ends up being first-round quarterback Bo Nix, rather than anyone on defense. Making any sweeping predictions that Nix will even be the full-time starter would be premature. Training camp will answer a great deal of questions on that front.

It’s generally accepted that Sutton will be the Broncos’ No.1 receiver. NFL.com has a theory that Sutton’s stubborn contractual issues might take him off his stride, but that’s probably being overplayed.

Sutton’s diligent approach to his craft won’t stop him from preparing to the best of his abilities, and that will include a private get-together between Denver’s quarterbacks and receivers for a throwing session or two prior to training camp. The challenge any receiver faces of bonding with a rookie quarterback during the season or with a career backup like Stidham could curtail Sutton’s chances of becoming the Broncos’ MVP.

The decreasing likelihood that Sutton, Nix, or another offensive player will become a dominant force, makes Surtain the heavy favorite for team MVP honors. Furthermore, Surtain will do it the hard way, simply on account of drawing the toughest one-on-one assignments on a weekly basis.

Factor in a looming lucrative contract extension for Surtain, and the Broncos and their star defender have every reason to be massively motivated for this season. All told, that makes Surtain the horse to back in the Broncos’ MVP battle — until someone else throws a wrench in the works.
