As younger boys within the Nineteen Fifties Stan and I had been launched to baseball – one within the tiny city of Mora in central Missouri and the opposite 350 miles southeast in Memphis, Tenn.

“I listened with my grandfather and my father to the St. Louis Cardinals on the radio,’’ he as soon as mentioned. Kroenke really was named after Cardinals’ stars Enos “Nation’’ Slaughter and Stan “The Man’’ Musial. At age 9 Kroenke swept the flooring at his father’s Mora Lumber Firm, which nonetheless is in enterprise immediately.

My dad and I listened to the Cardinals at the back of a storage he constructed with little help from a son who would bounce baseballs off the wall – “thwonk’’ – and attempt to duplicate each play within the sport. The child visualized what Sportsman’s Park will need to have been like and dreamed of someday taking part in for the Cardinals. Stan fantasized, too.

As a result of the Cardinals had been the westernmost/southernmost Main League Baseball staff, their video games had been broadcast seemingly in every single place within the hinterlands. Harry Caray, Joe Buck and Joe Garagiola made it actual for Stan and me and different youths and their fathers and grandfathers.

“It could be, it could possibly be, it’s . . . a house run’’. Harry’s shout would reverberate from contained in the previous Motorola transportable radio. “HOLY COW!’

The Cardinals had been good in 1951-52-53, ending third in an eight-team league all three seasons. They weren’t so scorching the following two years, dropping to sixth, then eighth. However they had been Our Cardinals. We celebrated with candy tea and chocolate icebox pie once they gained.

The Kroenkes had been doing the identical approach up the street.

My dad took on a second job and introduced earlier than my eighth birthday in June we’d make a journey to St. Louis to look at the Cardinals and Stan The Man towards the Brooklyn Dodgers and Duke Snider and the superb Jackie Robinson.

Being with my dad for my first practice trip, my first resort keep, my first main league video games. The Dodgers swept the Playing cards, however I nonetheless think about that point the most effective of my life. I informed dad on the trip house I wished to affix a junior baseball staff and sometime turn into a author for The Sporting Information.

Younger Kroenke shared related sentiments. He performed baseball and basketball and ran observe at Cole Camp Excessive College, then earned bachelor and grasp’s levels on the College of Missouri whereas opening his personal clothes retailer.

Though Kroenke was a profitable businessman, he retained a ardour for sports activities and wished to personal a staff. “I at all times thought I’d take pleasure in it as a result of the skilled sports activities enterprise is a component enterprise and half sports activities, and I like each,’’ he informed the Columbia (Mo.) Each day Tribune.

I grew as much as write for The Sporting Information and coated the Cardinals in two World Sequence.

Kroenke and I typically talked over the previous 20 years.

However, regardless of Kroenke’s personal sturdy devotion to sports activities as a youth listening to baseball broadcasts, in the end main him to sports activities franchise possession, he has disadvantaged a large number of Colorado girls and boys of viewing their groups, a two-time NBA MVP and two of the most effective NHL stars throughout the common season the previous three years.

Their goals are blacked out.

Colorado authorities shut down low-income housing developer

The Colorado Division of Securities is pursuing legal action against a man whom it claims deceived investors and used the ownership of federally supported low-income housing projects to line his own pockets.

Securities Commissioner Tung Chan announced its civil court filings against Michael Dale Graham, 68, on Nov. 12.

Chan’s office filed civil fraud charges against Graham, and also asked for a temporary restraining order and freezing of Graham’s assets and his companies’. A Denver district court judge immediately granted both. Since then, two court dates to review the those orders have canceled; a third is scheduled for mid-January.

Graham operates Sebastian Partners LLC, Sebastiane Partners LLC, and Gravitas Qualified Opportunity Zone Fund I LLC (“GQOZF”), all of which were controlled by Graham during his “elaborate real estate investment scheme,” as described by the securities office in a case document.

The filing states Graham collected more than $1.1 million from eight investors to purchase three adjacent homes in Aurora. The Denver-based Gravitas fund and its investors purportedly qualified for the federal Qualified Opportunity Zone (QOZ) program with the homes. Qualified Opportunity Zones were created by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act passed by Congress in 2017. The zones encouraged growth in low-income communities by offering tax benefits to investors, namely reductions in capital gains taxes on developed properties.

Graham formed Gravitas in early 2019 and purchased the three homes located in the 21000 block of E. 60th Avenue two years later. He quickly sold one of them with notifying investors, according to the case document. While managing the other two, Graham and Gravitas transferred the fund’s assets and never operated within QOZ guidelines to the benefit of its investors or the community, according to the state.

Gravitas also transferred the titles for the two properties to Graham privately. As their owner, Graham obtained undocumented loans from friends totaling almost $600,000. The two loans used the two properties as security.

Gravitas investors were never informed of the two loans, according to the case document. Also, Gravitas never sent its investors year-end tax reports, the securities office alleges.

Graham used the proceeds of the loans for personal use. No specific details were provided about those uses.

“Effectively, Graham used Gravitas as his personal piggy bank,” as stated in the case document, “claiming both funds and properties as his own. Graham never told investors about the risks associated with transferring title to himself. On September 1, 2023, he sent a letter to investors, stating that the properties ‘we own’ are doing well and generating growth due to record-breaking home appreciation. But Gravitas no longer owned the properties.

“Gravitas no longer had assets at all.”

Furthermore, the securities office said Graham failed to notify investors of recent court orders against him in Colorado and California. In total, Graham was ordered to pay more than $1 million in damages related to previous real estate projects.

Graham’s most recent residence is in Reno, Nev., according to an online search of public records. He evidently has previously lived in Santa Monica, Calif., and Greenwood Village.
