Texas lawmakers press for 'political rhetoric' to be part of probe into Trump assassination attempt

Published

FIRST ON FOX: Over two dozen Texas lawmakers are calling for the House Oversight Committee to look into “political rhetoric” used against former President Trump in their investigation into the assassination attempt that nearly took his life.

The House Committee on Oversight and Accountability launched an investigation into the assassination attempt after the former president was shot in the ear at a campaign rally in western Pennsylvania on Saturday.

State Rep. Ellen Troxclair, R-Texas, spearheaded a letter to the committee and Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., Wednesday, requesting they also look into “grotesque depictions of President Trump and the tens of millions of fellow Americans that support him as ‘enemies’ or ‘threats to democracy’ ahead of the assassination attempt.”

“Americans deserve answers,” the lawmakers wrote, first thanking the committee for opening an investigation into the deadly incident. “At minimum, we need to understand how the attempted assassination was able to occur and what will be done to ensure it does not happen again.”

The Republicans then called on Congress to “include within its hearing an examination of the political rhetoric used during this current presidential campaign and how it has contributed to a rising threat of political violence.”

“While we are blessed to live in a country where we have a constitutional right to free speech, this constant flammable rhetoric has a tangible detrimental impact on our country,” the letter read. “The Oversight Committee is now uniquely situated to raise attention to the effect this has on the American people and to lead us back to a place of honest political discussion focused on policy positions.”

Troxclair, of Texas House District 19, was joined by 26 other Texas state representatives and 2024 nominees in the letter.

Sen. JD Vance of Ohio, Trump’s recently announced 2024 running mate, used the assassination attempt to point the finger of blame at President Biden.

“The central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs. That rhetoric led directly to President Trump’s attempted assassination,” Vance posted on X, formerly Twitter, after the Trump rally shooting.

The Oversight Committee plans to hold a hearing on the assassination attempt on June 22.

“Sonny immediately captured our hearts with his joyful smile and his family’s heartwarming demonstration of what it means to grow with love,” she added.

“One day we were lying in bed and the sun just peeked through the window right on my belly so perfectly, and I was like, ‘Oh, Sonny,’” his mother said. “We went with that ever since.”

Dominique McLeod said she’d received multiple comments about how Sonny “looks like the Gerber baby” — which prompted her to enter her son in the contest.

While Sonny has already clinched the “Gerber baby” title, his parents agreed that he’s free to pursue “whatever he wants” as he grows up.

“I pray it’s something impactful for the world.”

“I just want him and our daughter to know this world is whatever they want to make of it,” his mother said.

“I pray it’s something positive. I pray it’s something impactful for the world. But I don’t ever want to put a restriction on what they can or can’t do.”

“If he told me, ‘Mom, I want to be an astronaut,’ I’d contact NASA and figure out how we can try to make that dream a reality.”

Akil McLeod emphasized the importance of supporting each child’s dreams.

“I know what it’s like when you have family or friends who don’t support a dream or a goal,” he said. “And I just never want him to feel that way.”

Over 40 dogs discovered in Southern California hoarder house

Officials raided a hoarder house in Southern California where over 40 dogs were discovered inside.

Riverside County Animal Services responded to a home in the 88000 block of Avenue 61 in Thermal on July 11.

Crews discovered over 40 dogs at the home, with around 20 dogs that were found dead. The homeowner had reportedly left the property and the canines completely unattended.

Some dogs were roaming around freely while others were found in crates or confined to rooms

The property was overrun with trash and debris and the home’s interior was filled with immense clutter and a strong urine odor, crews said. Temperatures at the property had reached triple digits.

The 20 dogs who were still alive were transported to the Coachella Valley Animal Campus in Thousand Palms for treatment. Most of the dogs were found in very poor condition and many were emaciated and weak, veterinary staff said.

Animal service workers said the discovery was “one of the worst they’ve seen in years.”

“Awful, just awful,” said Deputy Director Jackie Schart, who oversees shelter operations. “These dogs are so weak, so emaciated, so starved. There were dogs in crates with dead dogs. Just terrible.”

Volunteers and rescue partners were asked to help foster and care for the dogs as the shelter was overcrowded — they had over 200 dogs on site but only 84 kennel runs.

County officials later confirmed the homeowner had been hospitalized in critical condition and may not survive.

“A situation like this usually rises to the level of animal cruelty for serious neglect,” officials said. “However, it’s unlikely Animal Services will pursue cruelty charges because the dog owner has been hospitalized.”

The incident remains under investigation.

Animals that are available to adopt from Riverside County animal shelters can be found here.
