Virginia top cop hopeful torched by police organization over ‘reckless’ remarks about officer deaths

A Virginia police association said even the alleged remarks by attorney general hopeful Jay Jones crossed an unforgivable line, calling them “profoundly reckless” and “an affront to fallen officers.”

In a statement to Fox News Digital, Virginia State Police Association (VSPA) President Tim Confroy said the organization was “deeply disturbed” by the reported 2020 comment, which Jones has denied making.

Jones once allegedly suggested that if more police officers were killed, they would shoot fewer people, a former colleague in the state legislature said. Republican Del. Carrie Coyner told Virginia Scope on Monday that during a 2020 conversation about qualified immunity, she told Jones that without the legal protection, police officers would get killed.

“Well, maybe if a few of them died, that they would move on, not shooting people, not killing people,” Jones responded, according to Coyner.

“There is no place for rhetoric that fuels hostility,” Confroy said. “If true, these words are profoundly reckless. The words dishonor every man and woman who has sworn to protect and serve the Commonwealth and undermine the foundation of mutual respect and public trust that effective law enforcement and officer safety depend upon.”

The association noted that 67 Virginia state troopers have died in the line of duty, saying Jones’s reported statement was “unconscionable” and “an affront to the memory of those whom we have lost.”

“There is no place for rhetoric that fuels hostility,” Confroy said.

He said that law enforcement officers, especially amid the current political climate toward law enforcement, need their elected officials to promote “meaningful advocacy that recognizes the inherent risk of public service.”

Violent text scandal

The rebuke comes as Jones faces growing bipartisan backlash following the release of his private text messages in which he appeared to fantasize about violence toward political opponents.

The embattled attorney general hopeful allegedly sent text messages suggesting he would shoot then–House Speaker Todd Gilbert “over Adolf Hitler.”

In those messages, he also wrote that Gilbert and his wife should have to watch their “fascist” children die. At one point, Jones wrote, “Three people, two bullets. Gilbert, Hitler, and Pol Pot. Gilbert gets two bullets to the head.”

Political fallout

Prominent Democrats and Republicans have called Jones’ comments disqualifying for someone seeking to become Virginia’s top cop.

Along with the VSPA, the Virginia Fraternal Order of Police sent a letter to Jones, asking him to bow out of the attorney general race immediately, while also condemning his 2022 text messages.

“The Virginia Fraternal Order of Police is aware of the recent text message scandal involving you, the Democrat candidate for Attorney General. While this incident may have occurred in 2022, this conduct has no place in our society or democracy, especially from an elected official who is running to be the top prosecutor in Virginia,” the FOP wrote. “The men and women of the Virginia Fraternal Order unequivocally condemn these violent text messages sent by you about a political opponent and his family.”

FIRST ON FOX: U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents arrested two illegal immigrants wanted for murder in Texas and Georgia on the same day, with one allegedly confessing to a killing after his arrest, officials said.

In Texas, on Oct. 22, agents took William Machado, a Honduran national, into custody. Machado had been wanted by local law enforcement since 2022 for murder.

Authorities said Rodriguez-Mendoza has a lengthy criminal record, including multiple arrests on charges of drunk driving, drug possession charges, and driving without a license.

ICE confirmed Rodriguez-Mendoza had previously been removed from the U.S. in 2000 and 2018, but illegally re-entered the country for a third time at an unknown date and location.

“These two criminal illegal alien MURDERERS will now face justice thanks to the brave men and women of ICE law enforcement,” said DHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin in a statement to Fox News Digital.

“Machado and Rodriguez-Mendoza have zero regard for human life, and we have NO PLACE for animals like them in our country,” she added.

JetBlue flight makes emergency landing at Tampa Airport after sudden ‘drop in altitude’ injures passengers

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

A JetBlue flight traveling from Cancun to New Jersey made an emergency diversion to Tampa Thursday after a sudden “drop in altitude” left several passengers injured, the air carrier told Fox News Digital.

Flight 1230, an Airbus 320, was headed to New Jersey’s Newark Liberty International Airport from Cancun International Airport in Mexico when it suddenly experienced a “flight control issue” and was diverted to a nearby airport, the airline said.

The plane landed at Tampa International Airport around 2 p.m., the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) told Fox News Digital.

JetBlue added that the “flight was met by medical personnel who evaluated customers and crew members, and those needing additional care were transported to a local hospital.”

Miami Beach commissioner to donate salary to family of fallen police officer

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

A South Florida elected official is pledging to donate his salary to the family of a fallen police officer who died in a fatal crash this week and left behind a wife and three young children.

Miami Beach Commissioner David Suarez told Fox News Digital he plans to reach out to the family of Miami Beach Police officer David Cajuso after giving them time to grieve.

Cajuso, 33, was a 10-year veteran of the police force who served as a motorman “with courage and an unwavering commitment to public service,” the police department said in a Facebook post announcing his death.

“You couldn’t find a better officer. He was really a cop’s cop. He was one of the best,” Suarez said. “He leaves behind a widow and three very small children. I’m married. I have three small children, and I can’t image what my wife would do without me.”

The fallen officer died after being involved in a traffic crash along the northbound lanes of Interstate 75 in the area of NW 138 Street.

Miami Beach commissioners make around $70,000 annually, a combination of base pay and monthly allowances, Suarez said.

Cajuso was remembered by residents as a good police officer with a warm smile who displayed the utmost professionalism.

“I recently spoke to him about the importance of supporting law enforcement and mutual friends we shared from my time in the FBI and those from Miami Beach Police Department,” Nicole Parker, a former FBI special agent and Fox News contributor who lives in Miami Beach, told Fox News Digital.

“He genuinely cared about protecting others and particularly the most vulnerable, children.

“I was crushed to learn of his passing and even more heartbroken when I saw the photos of his beautiful family — a wife and three young children,” she added. “Having lost my closest friend in the line, the devastating impact it has on the children left behind is beyond words.”

Suarez credited law enforcement with protecting the public, specifically in Miami Beach.

“We stick up for our law enforcement,” he said. “I think it’s important that we support each other.

“I wish more politicians really did stick up for law enforcement and support families because it’s a tough job. You have families that are involved with these police officers,” he added. “A lot of people forget that they have spouses, they have a lot of children.

“A lot of them are young, and I think it’s important that we show the human side to the people who really protect us, because, in the last couple years, they’ve had a bad rap. They’ve been vilified in the media, and that goes with their families too.”
