Virginia Tech hands Virginia its largest ACC loss in Tony Bennett’s coaching era
BLACKSBURG — Lynn Kidd scored 14 points and did not miss a shot as Virginia Tech just missed its largest margin of victory against rival Virginia, beating the Cavaliers 75-41 Monday night at Cassell Coliseum.
The Hokies (15-11, 7-8 Atlantic Coast Conference) handed the Cavaliers (20-7, 11-5) their worst conference loss — by 10 points — in Tony Bennett’s 15 seasons at the helm. Virginia Tech beat Virginia by 35 points, 105-70, in February 1961.
It was the Hokies’ fourth straight home win over UVA, matching 2007-10 for their longest streak in a rivalry that has become known as the Commonwealth Clash.
Kidd made all five of his shots from the floor and all four of his free throws for Virginia Tech. He added seven rebounds. Robbie Beran scored 13 and also didn’t miss a shot — going 4 for 4 from the floor, with two 3-pointers, and 3 for 3 at the free-throw line.
Reserve Tyler Nickel also scored 13, adding six assists and four rebounds. Mylyjael Poteat scored 11 off the bench on 5-for-7 shooting, including a 3-pointer.
Isaac McKneely led UVA with 11 points.
Virginia Tech went on a 20-0 run, holding Virginia scoreless for nearly nine minutes, in building a 36-16 lead at halftime. Kidd scored 12 and Nickel added nine points as Virginia Tech shot 50% overall and made 4 of 11 from 3-point range.
Jordan Minor’s layup pulled Virginia within 16-14 with 9:43 remaining, but the Cavaliers did not score again until Leon Bond III dunked with 46 seconds left. Virginia shot 32% and missed all five of its 3-point attempts before intermission. All of the Cavaliers’ first-half scoring came in the paint.
Virginia had one basket over 14 minutes spanning the halves until Reece Beekman hit the Cavaliers’ first 3-pointer and Ryan Dunn followed with a layup to make it 43-21 with 17 minutes left to play.
But the Hokies had no need to worry. Beran buried a 3-pointer with 7:22 to go to push the Hokies’ advantage to 63-31. Poteat scored twice in a 6-0 run, and Virginia Tech led 69-33 with 3:47 remaining, prompting Hokies coach Mike Young to empty his bench.
The rout gave the Hokies a rivalry split for the season. Virginia beat Virginia Tech 65-57 in Charlottesville on Jan. 17 to begin an eight-game winning streak.
Virginia Tech travels to take on Pittsburgh on Saturday. Virginia returns home to play No. 10 North Carolina on Saturday.
Denver police have arrested the man they believe was responsible for a fatal shooting on E. Virginia Avenue on Thursday afternoon.
According to an arrest affidavit, the Denver Dispatch Center received a 911 call around 12:35 p.m. to report a shooting in the 10100 block of E. Virginia Ave. The caller told dispatch workers that a white SUV was fleeing the scene.
Responding officers found a man who was critically wounded. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
Investigators reportedly discovered a handgun, the victim’s cellphone and money in the area where the shooting happened. They also located surveillance footage in the area, which appeared to show the victim exiting a white Chevrolet Tahoe as gunshots could be heard. He walked to the east, looking for help, before collapsing on the ground.
The affidavit says a conversation was discovered on the victim’s Instagram account in which he was speaking with another person who was selling a firearm.
Aurora police assisted investigators using the Flock License Plate Reader system, identifying the Tahoe at several locations. Police said the vehicle had unique characteristics on the passenger rear wheel. The affidavit says that, before the shooting, the vehicle had a rear license plate, but after the shooting, it was missing.
Investigators found the vehicle, executed a search warrant and found a fired cartridge case in the back seat. A person connected to the case reportedly told officers that he drove his friend, later identified as Daniel Puga Villegas, to meet a person to collect money from him. However, he says an argument took place, and Villegas shot the victim, then ripped off his temporary rear license plate and, while still holding the gun, told him to drive.
Villegas was arrested on Sunday with assistance from the APD and is facing charges of first-degree murder.
