HUMBOLDT, Tenn. — A 12-year-old girl in Tennessee has been charged with murder, accused of smothering her 8-year-old cousin as the younger girl slept.

A relative said they had been arguing over an iPhone.

A security camera recorded the killing, inside the bedroom they shared on July 15 in Humboldt, Tennessee, the county prosecutor said.

The victim’s mother, Rayana Smith, identified the 8-year-old as Demeria Hollingsworth, according to WREG.

The recording shows the older child using bedding to suffocate her cousin as the younger girl slept in the top bunk, Gibson District Attorney Frederick Agee’s statement said. After the child died, “the juvenile cleaned up the victim and repositioned her body,” Agee said.

A relative told WREG-TV in Memphis that the girls had been arguing over an iPhone after coming from out of town to stay with their grandmother.

The girl was charged with first-degree murder and tampering with evidence after authorities obtained the video on Wednesday.

“I consider this to be one of the most disturbing violent acts committed by either an adult or juvenile that my office has prosecuted,” Agee wrote in the statement.

He said he would petition a judge to prosecute the girl, who turns 13 later this month, in adult court, which would allow for “a lengthier sentence, whether that will be through incarceration or supervision with court-ordered conditions.”

Tennessee Titans Begin 2024 Training Camp Under New Head Coach Brian Callahan – Clarksville Online – Clarksville News, Sports, Events and Information

Nashville, TN – The Tennessee Titans report to Ascension Saint Thomas Sports Park for the start of training camp on Tuesday, July 23rd, 2024. The first full-squad practice of camp is scheduled for 9:15am CT on Wednesday, July 24th.

Tennessee Titans head coach Brian Callahan is set to lead his first training camp in Tennessee. He was hired as the 20th head coach in franchise history on January 24th after serving five seasons as the offensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals.

Additionally during the offseason, the Tennessee Titans announced a new front office structure under controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk. Ran Carthon was promoted to executive vice president/general manager, while Chad Brinker was elevated to the newly created position of president of football operations. Burke Nihill remains in his role as president and CEO.

The Basics

As the Tennessee Titans begin preparations for the 65th season in franchise history, Ascension Saint Thomas Sports Park (460 Great Circle Road) will host its 25th training camp. The club’s headquarters, which opened at the conclusion of training camp in 1999, is located in MetroCenter, just north of downtown Nashville. In 2022, a renovation of the existing building and a 60,000-square- foot addition was completed at the facility.

Titans fans are encouraged to attend an open training camp practice at Nissan Stadium on Saturday, July 27th at 10:00am CT as part of ‘Back Together Weekend’ presented by SeatGeek. Fans can attend for free but must claim a ticket online at www.tennesseetitans.com/backtogetherweekend where additional details are provided.

A limited number of tickets for two additional practices have already been claimed. No tickets to attend practice at Ascension Saint Thomas Sports Park will be available on-site for walk-up guests.

Tennessee football picked to finish 7th in preseason SEC rankings

It’s been nearly two decades since Tennessee football has won the SEC or appeared in the SEC Championship Game. Preseason voters don’t expect that to change for the Vols in 2024 based on the preseason SEC rankings.

It will be more difficult for the Vols to break the streak in the new-look SEC. Big 12 powerhouses Texas and Oklahoma have joined the SEC and will look to make their mark in the conference in their first year as members.
The SEC also won’t have traditional East/West divisions and will go divisionless for 2024 and 2025. This means the best two teams in the SEC will play in the SEC Championship Game.

With all of the new changes, SEC voters don’t believe the Vols will fare too well in the new look SEC. Voters picked the Vols to finish 7th this year behind SEC rivals and newcomers.

Georgia sits at the top of the SEC, to no one’s surprise, while Alabama comes in at No. 3 with first-year head coach Kalen DeBoer. Voters expect the former Washington head coach to fit in nicely in his first season in Tuscaloosa.

SEC household names Ole Miss and LSU have been picked to finish fourth and fifth in 2024, with Missouri finishing at No. 6 just ahead of Tennessee.

Texas has been picked to finish second in the SEC this year. At the same time, Oklahoma is expected to finish just behind the Vols at No. 8. We will get an early look at Oklahoma when Tennessee heads to Norman to take on the Sooners on September 21.

Tennessee opens the season on August 31 against Chattanooga in Neyland Stadium. The Vols’ SEC schedule includes two of the top-five teams and five of the bottom six teams in the preseason rankings, which could bode well for the Vols’ quest to win a championship.
