South Carolina receives nearly $1B in infrastructure funding under Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law

CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) — More infrastructure funding was allocated to South Carolina for the Fiscal Year 2024, as noted in a Thursday announcement from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration.

Approximately $997 million will support investments in roads, bridges, tunnels, and carbon emission reduction, among other infrastructure investments within the state. The funding is from President Joe Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

“Long-needed major improvements are coming to America’s network of roads, bridges, and highways,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. “Thanks to President Biden, we are proud to deliver funding to modernize roads and bridges across America–strengthening our supply chains, creating good-paying jobs, and connecting Americans to every corner of this country.”

In South Carolina, the funding is broken down as the following:

Highway Safety Improvement Program: $54,068,846
Railway-Highway Crossings Program: $4,861,791
Congestion Mitigation & Air Quality Program: $14,849,854
Metropolitan Planning: $4,323,173
National Highway Freight Program: $24,161,027
Carbon Reduction Program: $22,543,414
PROTECT Formula Program: $25,633,477
National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Program: $14,909,490
Bridge Formula Program: $59,244,248

“These historic investments in American infrastructure give States the flexibility they need to determine how to allocate funds for a range of transportation projects such as improving safety for all road users, replacing aging bridges, and reducing carbon emissions,” said Federal Highway Administrator Shailen Bhatt.

“This funding will allow States to continue the important work of President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that is making our infrastructure safer and more efficient for the millions of Americans who rely on it to get to school, work, and other important destinations every day.”

4-year-old among 5 dead in fiery South Carolina crash

Five people, including a 4-year-old, were killed during a fiery three-vehicle crash near the southern South Carolina coast, authorities said Thursday.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol said a BMW was traveling south Wednesday night on a road on St. Helena Island when the driver tried to pass a Toyota pickup also traveling south. The BMW collided head-on with a Honda sedan traveling northbound, news outlets reported, causing the BMW to overturn and catch fire. The Toyota also ended up striking the BMW after the initial collision, acccording to police reports.

4 DEAD IN VIRGINIA HEAD-ON COLLISION

The four occupants in the BMW and the Honda driver — also that car’s lone occupant — died at the scene, Beaufort County Coroner David Ott said.

Five people were killed in a three-vehicle collision in South Carolina on Wednesday night.

The coroner identified the dead motorists as Raymone Dagin, 26, and Mary Seabrook, 46, both of Beaufort; and St. Helena Island residents Henry Watson, 31; Tiera Seabrook, 31; and Jaycean Perry, 4. The Toyota’s driver was not injured.

The patrol said the accident remains under investigation.

South Carolina Farm Bureau breaks ground in Anderson on grain elevator expansion

ANDERSON, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – The South Carolina Farm Bureau (SCFB) is breaking ground on a multimillion-dollar expansion project in Anderson that should double grain storage capacity and add new office and warehouse space.

The groundbreaking will commence Friday, May 31 at 10:30 a.m. at the SCFB grain elevator on 1306 Whitehall Rd. in Anderson County.

This SCFB grain elevator is the only grain elevator within a 100-mile radius. The expansion will increase its capacity to better serve farmers.

The expansion project is funded by the Growing Agribusiness fund administered by the SC Department of Agriculture.

The market value of agricultural products sold in Anderson County in 2022 was $84.3 million. That number was a 12% increase since 2017.

South Carolina baseball’s journey to the NCAA Super Regionals begins Friday, when the Gamecocks face James Madison in the Raleigh Regional, hosted by top-seeded NC State.

The No. 3 seed Dukes (34-23) have not been in the NCAA tournament since 2011, whereas the No. 2 seed Gamecocks (36-23) are looking to advance to the Super Regional for the second consecutive season. The last time these two teams met in the tournament was in 2008. South Carolina is 9-1 against JMU.
