Southwest Oklahoma Memorial Day events helping celebrate those who paid ultimate sacrifice


LAWTON, Okla. (KSWO) – Memorial Day is coming up soon, and there are many different events in the Southwest Oklahoma area to help celebrate those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

In Duncan, the Simmons Center is holding a Memorial Day 5K Fun Run on Saturday, May 25, for those who are looking for activities to do on Memorial Day Weekend. People can register for $30 if they have a membership, or $40 if they don’t. It starts at 9 a.m. just north of the Simmons Center at the Haliburton Pavilion.

There will be a flag salute followed by the National Anthem, and after that, there will be a prayer. Runners are asked to wear red, white, and blue.

Coming up on Memorial Day, the Comanche Indian Veterans Association will be holding its 48th Annual Memorial Day Service. It starts at 11 a.m. at Watchetaker Hall and the CIVA Court of Honor.

It’ll start with a prayer, followed by the National Anthem, the Comanche Flag Song, and the Memorial Song. After that, there will be roll calls with multiple guest speakers. Lunch will be provided at the end of the event as well.

Sunset Memorial Gardens will also be holding its 35th Memorial Day Ceremony in Lawton with Mayor Stan Booker as a speaker. It starts at 2 p.m. and there will be an ensemble by the 77th Army Band.

Over in Elgin, a Memorial Day service will be held by America’s Veteran Supporters on Memorial Day itself. It starts at 10 a.m. at the Fort Sill National Cemetery with Chaplain Lisa Northway as a guest speaker..

Chickasha will also have its own service on Monday at The Grady County Veterans Memorial. The service starts at 11 a.m. with lunch being served at 12:30 p.m. at the Chickasha Elks Lodge. Gary McNatt, a Marine veteran, will be the guest speaker for the event.

Now, they will face a familiar face in the No. 2 Oklahoma Sooners.

Their first loss came to Louisiana in extra innings, and since then they have dropped series to Texas and Oklahoma State, with another loss to BYU. In their Norman Regional, they took wins against Cleveland State and Oregon.

It led to a 7-2 loss to 2nd Seeded Oklahoma State, Thursday morning, at the Big 12 Championship in Arlington.

Down 4-0, Gavin Kash hit a two run homer in the 7th to bring Tech within 2 at 4-2.

Red Raiders pitchers walked in a couple runs, and the lead ballooned back up to 7-2 after seven innings.

The defeat puts Texas Tech in the losers bracket, where they will play Cincinnati 4pm Thursday in an elimination game.

The Cincinnati Bearcats beat Texas to eliminate the Longhorns Wednesday.
