Miami Men’s Basketball Drops Fifth Straight as No. 4 Duke Looms in the Wing

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — The nightmare season continues as the Miami Hurricanes (4-12, 0-5 ACC) drops its fifth straight game against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons (12-4, 4-1 ACC) 88-78.

The first half was the same as other halves this season. The Hurricanes show promise in the first opening minutes then Lynn Kidd finds himself in early foul trouble. Without Kidd on the floor, the offense and subsequently the defense drastically dips.

The Watsco Center crowd has been loud despite the losses but they still can’t give energy to the team when simple mistakes continue to hold them back. This is highlighted defensively as they don’t have any defense and it continues to get worse game after game.

The Hurricanes allowed 50 paint points in this game as the season trend of atrocious interior defense continues. Not only that, Wake Forest’s Cameron Hildreth was electric for the Demon Deakes all game. He finished the game with 31 points, 11-16 FG, 6-8 3FG, and the Canes just struggled to stick with him during the game. Anytime a player blinked the ball was already through the net.

Miami finished the game shooting, 40 percent from the field, 30 percent from three-point range, and finishing with 14 turnovers. Matthew Cleveland finished the game with 22 points leading the Canes with star Freshman Jalil Bethea and Austin Swartz following with 13 and 12 respectively.

Bill Courtney knows that losing sucks but this won’t change the preparation and the effort the team will give as they have a big task ahead of them.

“Losing sucks,” Courtney said after the loss. It is very difficult these kids are working their tails off and deserve to win. It’s our job as a coaching staff and their jobs as players to figure out a way. We were right there tonight. We couldn’t get a stop but keep encouraging us. Give credit to Wake Forest.”

The Hurricanes now have the projected No. 1 overall NBA Draft pick in the Duke led Cooper Flagg to worry about who is also coming off a career game. There are still 15 games to go this season, but the countdown begins for the new era of the Miami Hurricanes.

Miami fans will have to wait a while to see quarterback Carson Beck on a football field, but the Hurricanes’ newest transfer is already making his impact felt in the content game.

Beck and girlfriend Hanna Cavinder, a guard on Miami’s basketball team, celebrated his arrival in South Florida in a video she posted to TikTok:

Having spent the last four years at Georgia, Beck was eligible to enter the 2025 NFL draft, and he was generally expected to test the pro waters. He was the No. 37 overall prospect on Bleacher Report’s 2025 big board that was posted on Jan. 2.

Instead, the experienced signal-caller will suit up for Miami next season.

In addition to the fact his girlfriend is already a student there, CBS Sports’ John Talty and Chris Hummer reported Beck is expected to collect $4 million in total NIL money with the transfer.

For some perspective, Caleb Williams has a $795,000 base salary from his rookie deal with the Chicago Bears. As the No. 1 overall pick in 2024, he also received a $25.5 million signing bonus.

The payouts dropped precipitously as you get further down the first round. Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr., who was picked 23rd overall, got a $7.5 million signing bonus.

Getting $4 million to play another year of college ball and potentially improving your draft stock in the process could be a shrewd decision.

Beck had a somewhat underwhelming final year at Georgia. In 13 games, he threw for 3,485 yards, 28 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Cam Ward parlayed his one year with Miami into becoming one of the top QBs in the 2025 draft, so maybe Beck could be on a similar trajectory.

Carson Beck, gf Hanna Cavinder do Miami ‘U’ dance to celebrate transfer from Georgia

It really pays to stay in college football for Carson Beck. Plus he no longer has to be long distance with his girlfriend Hanna Cavinder.

The former Georgia Bulldogs quarterback, who won two national championships as a backup, saw his NFL draft stock plummet this season, so instead of going pro, he took his talents to South Beach to the Miami Hurricanes for a reportedly cool $4 million for one season, which is equivalent to a mid-round first-round pick’s salary in the NFL.

The 23 year old was most likely influenced by his influencer girlfriend Hanna Cavinder, part of the Cavinder twins duo with her sister Haley that play basketball for the “U” and are also Sports Illustrated Swimsuit models, not to mention social media stars.

The Cavinder twins rose to fame with their TikTok dance routines, and Beck made a guest appearance with his girlfriend, also 23, to do a “U” dance. You can judge for yourself.

Cavinder flexes her abs in a tiny black crop top and a zip-up sweatshirt with matching sweatpants. Beck is even more casual in a black T-shirt and gray sweatpants, and naturally Hanna leads the couples’ “U” routine.

The joke amongst college football fans is that Beck’s career took a downturn when he started dating Hanna, and one of the most popular comments on the ESPN Instagram post had the zinger, “Miami fans I’m sorry.”

No matter what the haters say, Beck and Cavinder look extremely happy, and based on his NFL draft stock, it was a no brainer.

Lionel Messi-led Inter Miami unveils five-match, four-country preseason trip

Lionel Messi is getting another preseason tour with Inter Miami, this one a five-match trip that will see the reigning MLS Supporters’ Shield winners playing in four different countries as it tunes up for the 2025 season.

Announced Friday were three matches in South America and Central America. Inter Miami opens that swing with a game against Peruvian champion Club Universitario de Deportes in Lima on Jan. 29.

From there, the club goes to Panama City to take on Sporting San Miguelito on Feb. 2, followed by a trip to San Pedro Sula, Honduras, for a Feb. 8 match against Club Deportivo Olimpia.

The first and last preseason matches were already known: Inter Miami will play Mexican power Club America in Las Vegas on Jan. 18 and close the exhibition slate in Tampa, Florida, against MLS rival Orlando City on Feb. 14.

“We’re very excited to unveil the five matches against domestic and international opponents across the Americas that will prepare us for a highly anticipated 2025,” Inter Miami president of football operations Raul Sanllehi said. “These fixtures will put us in the best possible position ahead of an unparalleled campaign with various competitions we’re playing for this year — the FIFA Club World Cup, CONCACAF Champions Cup, Leagues Cup and MLS.”

With 34 regular season MLS matches, five preseason games and the three cup tournaments, Inter Miami could easily exceed 50 matches this season — and probably will play even more than that. And that doesn’t even count international matches for Messi and likely several other Inter Miami players.

This year’s preseason tour isn’t quite as ambitious as the one Inter Miami planned last year, with matches in Dallas, El Salvador, Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong and Japan on that schedule. Much of that trip didn’t go as envisioned: A Messi vs. Cristiano Ronaldo matchup in Saudi Arabia didn’t happen because Ronaldo was sidelined by injury, and fans in Asia were angered by Messi missing one match there and playing sparingly in another. Some refunds were even issued to help appease disappointed ticket-holders, some of whom spent more than $600 with hopes of seeing Messi play.

Inter Miami’s training camp starts with physicals on Saturday. The first practice under new coach Javier Mascherano is Monday.
