Kentucky Transfers Bryce Hopkins, Keion Brooks Jr Flourishing With New Teams

When you’ve ever listened to a John Calipari press convention or two, you have in all probability heard this comment from the top coach about enjoying for Kentucky:

“This is not for everyone.”

It is onerous to disagree, simply check out the drama that has circulated round Huge Blue Nation this season. “All-time low” this, “Cal to Texas” that, there’s been no scarcity of panic and hysteria surrounding the workforce because the Wildcats dropped six video games within the first half of the 2022-23 marketing campaign.

That is only a microcosm of life as a participant in the course of the Calipari period. It is not all the time concerning the psychological facet of enjoying at Kentucky, nevertheless. Typically, the match simply is not proper or enjoying time is not on the desk, typically it is a combination of every thing.

The facility of the switch portal now permits for gamers to get out of these conditions reasonably rapidly. That is what three Wildcats did after Saint Peter’s surprised UK within the first spherical of the NCAA Match final March.

Veteran ahead Keion Brooks Jr., former 4-star ahead Bryce Hopkins and Bluegrass native taking pictures guard Dontaie Allen all looked for — and located — new properties over the offseason.

Brooks would stay within the Energy 5 and head throughout the nation to play for Washington, Hopkins joined distinguished Huge East program Windfall and Allen remained in Kentucky, transferring over to play for coach Rick Stansbury and WKU.

As UK has meandered by means of its season, two of the three former Wildcats have seen nice success at their new faculties.

Beginning with Brooks, the Fort Wayne, Ind. native has turn out to be the A1 choice for the Huskies. After averaging 10.5 factors and 5.6 rebounds over his final two seasons in Lexington, he is taken an incredible leap, now pouring in 17.3 PPG and seven.2 RPG.

The 6-foot-7, 210-pounder has scored no less than 15 factors in 13 of 21 video games this season and has led Washington in scoring in 14 video games. In a 12-point win over Cal Poly on Dec. 13, Brooks collected 30 factors, breaking his career-high that was notched final season in his dominant 27-point outing in UK’s spanking of Kansas in Lawrence.

His finest basketball has are available Pac 12 play, as he is scored 20-plus on three events and went on a three-game double-double stretch.

Brooks was usually checked out because the eventual odd man out for Kentucky. He confirmed flashes at factors, but in addition had clunky outings that made BBN ponder if he was the fitting man to carry down the beginning energy ahead gig for the Wildcats. With different items within the paint like Oscar Tshiebwe and Jacob Toppin thought to return for one more 12 months, whereas incoming freshman Chris Livingston was seen as a possible one-and-done, the choice for Brooks to return for that illustrious fourth season at UK did not make an incredible quantity of sense.

The Huskies are simply 12-9 and nowhere close to an NCAA Match berth, however Brooks’ senior season goes down a deal with within the northwest.

Transferring cross-country to Rhode Island, Hopkins is on his technique to changing into the Huge East Participant of the 12 months. After incomes simply 6.4 minutes-per-game in his freshman 12 months at UK, the Oak Park, In poor health. product is main the Friars with 16.6 PPG and 9.3 RPG.

The ahead has acquired eight double-doubles on the season, taking pictures 48.9 p.c from the ground whereas now averaging 33.8 minutes. His marquee efficiency got here in a double-overtime win over Marquette on Dec. 20, as he canned eight pictures and made 13 free throws, touting 29 factors to associate with a whopping 23 boards. He has seven video games with 20 or extra factors this season, together with a 27-point night time in an enormous win over then-fourth-ranked UConn on Jan. 4.

The emergence of Hopkins is not precisely astonishing, however it’s no less than considerably stunning. There was no fear about Brooks with the ability to translate elsewhere, as he had confirmed he was a succesful participant throughout his three years at Kentucky. Hopkins by no means actually acquired that chance final season.

Calipari gave him some tick at first of the 12 months towards the mid-major foes, however as soon as convention play cracked down, his minutes grew to become few and much between. His lone stamp got here in a 71-66 win over LSU on Feb. 23, as he stepped as much as the plate and performed 16 minutes (season-high in SEC play), connecting on 5 of six pictures and including a couple of free throws to gather 13 factors in addition to 4 rebounds.

The efficiency earned some reward from Calipari:

“What he did at present is he rebounded and he went to the offensive glass, he tried to protect, he was concerned in every thing, made a stick again, makes a 15-footer. However there was nothing like crazy-crazy, however we’re all speaking about him as a result of he did what the workforce wanted him to do,” he mentioned. “He did it as a result of I mentioned ‘I am enjoying guys which are going to struggle.’ When you’re not preventing, I am not enjoying you. And I went with him. The workforce was so joyful for him and so was I.”

Quick ahead to this season, and Windfall is the No. 22 workforce within the nation with a 15-5 document. On the entrance of the helm for coach Ed Cooley’s workforce is that very same combo-forward who all the time tried to make the most of his minimal alternatives in blue and white.

Enjoying basketball on the College of Kentucky might not be for everyone, however that clearly does not imply it is a unhealthy factor if you happen to fall into that class. Brooks and Hopkins are two examples of former Cats flourishing in maybe higher environments and conditions.

Bear in mind, “they don’t seem to be machines, they don’t seem to be robots!.”

ESPN picks the winner between Kentucky and Georgia State

The Kentucky Wildcats are getting ready to take on Georgia State in Rupp Arena as Mark Pope’s squad will look to move to 7-0 on the season. In the Wildcat’s first game of the week, they took down WKU, but for the first team, all season looked vulnerable.

The Wildcats were able to win this game 87-68, but there were some things Coach Pope’s team could have done better. Defensively the Wildcats were solid in the win, but the threes weren’t falling in this ball game.

A game like this was good for Kentucky because they have looked unstoppable against every team this season aside from Duke, so a little bit of struggle is a good thing. The threes won’t always fall, so the Wildcats need to learn to win a game when this is happening.

Now the Wildcats will take on Georgia State who is 4-3 on the season. The Panthers played Mississippi State earlier in the season, and the Bulldogs blew them out 101-61 in Starkville.

ESPN doesn’t seem to think the Wildcats will struggle in this ball game as they give Kentucky a 98.2% chance to win.

The goal in this game for the Wildcats should be to keep working on the rebounding and taking care of the ball but also the shots need to fall.

The matchup between the Kentucky Wildcats and Georgia State will be on Friday the 29th at 7:00 pm et. Kentucky fans can watch this game on the SEC Network. Coach Pope and his team shouldn’t have any issue blowing out the Panthers on Friday.
