Central Texas Food Bank, Austin Pets Alive! team up for Thanksgiving food drive
AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Central Texas Food Bank (CTFB) and Austin Pets Alive! are teaming up once again for a drive-up food distribution ahead of Thanksgiving.
On Monday, crews will operate out of a mobile pantry site located at the Delco Activity Center in Austin to distribute turkeys, fresh produce and other essential grocery items.
“Hunger doesn’t take a holiday and neither do we,” Sari Vatske, President and CEO of the Central Texas Food Bank, said in a release. “Every turkey distributed represents the belief that no table should remain empty during the holidays.”
The CTFB expects to serve around 750 households. Drivers can pull in, load up and head out — no questions asked.
Vatske said before the government shutdown in October, food insecurity was already on the rise in Central Texas. She said the numbers have hit a 10-year high, including during the pandemic.
“People were dipping into their savings. They were maxing out credit cards,” Vatske explained. “We are now serving over 610,000 food insecure individuals throughout 21 counties, and we’ve seen those numbers double over the past month or so as people recover from the shutdown and prepare for the holiday season.”
As of early Monday morning, drivers were already lining up outside of the Delco Center hours ahead of the distribution.
“It’s a help. A blessing for everyone for food to be given and not have to be bought. Prices are so high and some families can’t afford the things that they need,” Patricia Barnett, one of the first people to arrive at the distribution, said.
Austin Pets Alive! also plans to give out pet food to those in need.
The distribution is Monday, from 9-10:30 a.m. at the Delco Activity Center located at 4601 Pecan Brook Drive.

Harrowing new witness testimony shed light on the desperate final moments of 17-year-old Texas high school athlete Austin Metcalf’s life following a fatal April 2025 stabbing at a crowded track meet.
Taking the stand Saturday during the high-profile trial, a recently graduated 18-year-old from Memorial High School broke down in tears as he recounted the chaotic aftermath of the attack, testifying that he heard Metcalf “screaming for help.”
A second witness, a 16-year-old Memorial High School student from the class of 2027, told the court that immediately after the attack, some of Metcalf’s final words were, “he f—— stabbed me.”

The new emotional accounts build on earlier testimony from another student who recalled hearing Metcalf say, “Oh my God,” as the reality of the stabbing set in.
Karmelo Anthony, 19, faces a first-degree murder charge for the death of Metcalf, who was unable to be resuscitated by high school staff who attempted CPR as he lost consciousness. He later died at a local hospital.
Anthony has pleaded not guilty to the charge, with his defense team maintaining that he acted in a “split second of fear and chaos” and stabbed Metcalf in self-defense, Fox News Digital previously reported.
According to background details presented by prosecutors, the deadly encounter was sparked by a dispute over seating at the track meet.
Multiple witnesses testified that Anthony arrived uninvited and sat down inside the Memorial High School team tent. Fellow students reportedly asked Anthony to leave the tent as many as 15 times, but he allegedly refused.

TRAIN ATTACK VIDEO REIGNITES FURY OVER WITHHELD FOOTAGE OF AUSTIN METCALF KILLING
As the situation escalated, witnesses testified that Anthony warned Metcalf, telling him, “Touch me and find out,” and “Touch me, see what happens.”
During the confrontation, Anthony sat with a backpack on his lap and one hand inside it, leading some students to warn Metcalf not to touch him because they suspected he was gripping a concealed weapon.
The verbal dispute turned physical when Metcalf reportedly shoved or touched Anthony, prompting Anthony to stand up and stab the high school captain with a 3.5-inch folding knife.
Witnesses on Saturday described Anthony as “the aggressor,” noting Metcalf was “unwilling to fight.”

ACCUSED AUSTIN METCALF KILLER WON’T FACE DEATH PENALTY OR LIFE WITHOUT PAROLE: DA
Body-camera footage and officer testimony revealed that a cooperative Anthony made admissions to police immediately following the incident.
“I’m not alleged. I did it,” Anthony allegedly told a responding school resource officer.

He then repeatedly defended his actions to the police, saying, “He put his hands on me. I told him not to.”

Police arrested several teens in connection with the series of shootings across Austin in May. A 17-year-old is facing multiple charges, including multiple counts related to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault with a motor vehicle, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, theft of a firearm, evading arrest and other related offenses, Austin Police said.
Two teams who have never met on the diamond will face off with a chance to end the other’s season.
The No. 11 national seed Oregon Ducks will travel to Austin, Texas to face No. 6 national seed Texas in the Austin Super Regional at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The best-of-three series begins Saturday night and is shaping up to be a battle with a potential weather threat.
Both teams have momentum on their side.
Texas (43-13) swept through the Austin Regional, outscoring its opponents, 41-7. While Oregon (43-16) also dominated with three-straight wins over defeated rival Oregon State, Washington State and Yale to win the Eugene Regional.
The Ducks have recent postseason experience they can draw inspiration and lessons from: Oregon is one of three teams (North Carolina, West Virginia) that have advanced to the Supers in three of the last four seasons.
“I think the experience that they’ve had before should be able to help them in these rounds. And then leading in the College World Series, that’s a totally different discussion,” Oregon coach Mark Wasikowski said.
There are 16 teams left in the NCAA Tournament and only 8 teams will advance to the College World Series in Omaha. If Oregon wins Saturday night, the Ducks will be only one win away from punching their ticket to the CWS for the first time since 1954.

Two Things Oregon Fans Should Know
Oregon is a confident team as they head to Austin and there are two things that Ducks fans should know.
First, The Ducks pitching staff has never been hotter. Over the last nine games, The Ducks staff has combined for a 1.81 ERA with a .191 batting average. Also notable, Oregon’s three starting pitchers have been even better with a 1.47 ERA allowing just nine runs in 49 innings.
Oregon will need every ounce of that pitching prowess as the Longhorns are dominating at the plate. During the Austin Regional, Texas combined to go .376/.493/.761 with 12 home runs. Aiden Robbins earned Most Outstanding Player honors after totaling a .429 average with four homers and nine RBI.
Second, the Ducks are a power threat of their own. Oregon has hit 104 home runs this season, which is second-most in program history, and ranks top-20 nationally in home runs and home runs per game.
Oregon’s bats must show up in Austin as Texas finished with a 2.00 ERA in its three-game sweep in the Austin Regional. Oregon coach Mark Wasikowski said it best when he said that Texas’ pitchers are “putting up video game numbers.”

“These other guys are just absolute animals when it comes to their training, so it’s no surprise that they’re having postseason success,” Oregon coach Mark Wasikowski said during the Eugene Regional.
“Our preparation is just going to be about what we’ve done the entire year. We think it’s working, and it’s probably more about just enjoying the time together, because there’s teams right now that are taking the jerseys off, and that’s obviously something that we’ve been blessed with this year with this group of guys from the start. It’s a pretty special group in that locker room, and these guys can attest to that,” he continued.
If Oregon’s “special group” can pull off the upset in Texas, the Ducks will make history and have a chance to battle vs. the best in baseball for the national championship.
The College World Series begins on Friday, June 12, at Charles Schwab Field Omaha in Omaha, Nebraska.
