Ossoff seeks answers from CSX, which has seen derailments in Augusta
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – After a pair of recent train accidents, Sen. Jon Ossoff is pushing for answers from CSX, which also has been troubled by derailments in Augusta, as well.
“These significant operational failures could have seriously injured or killed my constituents, and CSX must do more to prevent a more serious incident from occurring in the future,” Ossoff wrote in a letter to the railroad.
Although he focused on recent derailments elsewhere in the state – the March 25 derailment of six CSX train cars in Fayette County and the May 9 derailment of 17 cars in Smyrna – Augusta has been troubled by CSX derailments, as well:
In his letter, Ossoff said:
“I write to express serious concern about two recent derailments of CSX train cars in Georgia, and to request specific solutions from CSX as soon as possible on plans to prevent such derailments in the future.”

Geter said the organization holds street festivals every first Saturday of the month.

VFW post serves barbecue lunch to veterans at Augusta nursing home
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Saturday marked the fifth annual VFW Day of Service with veteran-led community service projects.
The Day of Service started as a way to highlight veterans’ and service members’ efforts of helping their communities after serving. VFW Post 6445 in Harlem served a barbecue lunch for residents at the Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home in Augusta on Saturday.
Post leaders said the event is a way to honor the veterans’ service while building camaraderie.
“They all went somewhere, and they survived. You have to be a war veteran to be in here, right? Maybe someone went to war, but we get to leave at the end of the day. They don’t get to leave. And to see a smile on their face, that’s what makes it all worth it while they get to talk to somebody. And when they start to ring them down, you see they all have some kind of hat on, just to see a fellow veteran,” said Ronald Gilchrest, commander of Post 6445.
The VFW service projects will continue throughout the month of May in the U.S.

Burger King employee dispute ends in shooting near Augusta Mall
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – A fight between two Burger King employees ended in a shooting Friday evening inside the restaurant on Wrightsboro Road, across from the Augusta Mall, law enforcement officials say.
The victim was taken to an Augusta hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to law enforcement sources. The employee who had the gun was arrested, authorities said.
It’s unclear what started the argument. Crime scene investigators were called to the scene. We sent our crews to the scene as well.
This is not the first time a dispute inside an Augusta Burger King ended with gunfire. Earlier this year, a dispute at the Burger King on Deans Bridge Road ended with shots fired.
